Been to xoticpc and gentech to build the G73. I was told by xotic that even though there is a 2/17 and 3/2 shipment that due to the amount of orders they have already received there is no guarantee that I would even get a G73 from the 3/2 shipment. And that they will not know if there will be any addt'l G73's shipped until late March.

I filled out the sticky on the board as far as determining a laptop. I was advised to check out the G73. I was leaning towards asus to begin with due to the issues w/hp and dell (heat, screens, etc).

For someone that plans to use the laptop as a desktop replacement : web surfing, photos and editing, MS Office apps, watching movies...

do you think it's worthwhile to get the G72 from Best Buy? it has the p8700 duo chip and a slower hd. If I add in the 2 yr extended warranty and tax I would only be saving 350.00 vs the G73 but would have it in my hands by weeks end.

Just not sure I want to place an order for a laptop and have to wait 5-6 weeks before I even find out if I'll be one of the lucky ones to get my order filled. It would be different if I had a guarantee but since I am not a gamer I am late to discover the G73 and have possibly missed the boat.

    suggestions/opinions?

Seems that people have issues with the G72. Believe it was overheating issues.
I would just wait and get the latest and greatest with the G73 that's what im doing :)

Since you're not gaming I suggest not to look too deep into g series. G series laptops are made for gaming thus less battery life and kinda bulky.

I have the same question. I am thinking of selling or giving to my son my G50VT-X5 and buying the G73 w/ATI5870. It will be used for gaming exclusively. I use Macs for everything else.

I have a co-working willing to sell his G72GX-RBBX05 for $750. I have 2 external SATA BR drives, one of which could be cannibalized for upgrading the G72.

@$750 the G72GX-RBBX05 seems like a good deal, though not much faster than my upgraded G50.

Is it worth it to skip the G72 and buy the G73 at double the cost?

    Cheers,

Personally I don't get new things often so when I do I go big, hence why I have the g73 on preorder. That being said $750 the g72 is very tempting. It will pretty much play everything out there right now, the question is how it go with upcoming games...Long term get the g73, short term get the g72.

It's a shame Best Buy doesn't participate in the Asus 1 year ADW program :(.

Yep, I would get the G72 over the G73 for your needs and save yourself 1/3 of the price. Go for it. An online gaming buddy loves his G72, and it still has enough power for all his games. I'm guessing this is the one with the GTX260? Should be good for whatever you throw at it.

You don't game and your looking to buy the G72/G73???
Save some money and look for something else the G series is made for gaming.
    How about ASUS N71JQ-A1?
It's still has very good specs but not as expensive.

I don't game, but I'm looking for a 1920x1080 17" or bigger screen w/ BluRay that will be as future-proof as possible at a reasonable price, and the G73 fits the bill.

OP, Best Buy will have watered down versions of the G73 available 4/4 for $1199 and $1599. See here for more info...

I personally saw the entries for the -05 and -09 w/ a 4/4 date. The only thing in question are the exact specs. Read the thread I linked for more info...
