Hello,
I got an Asus laptop last week (G73-JHA2) and everything is almost perfect so far. There is one annoying thing however : There is some kind of high pitch electric noise that seems to come from the around the GPU. The noise is not constant and do some random on/off pattern.
I first thought it was the HD but if I open the back cover and use my ear (keeping the laptop horizontally), I clearly hear that the noise seems to come from around the GPU (in the center of the laptop, the part with a heat sink).
I found that the noise occur a lot more if I unplug the AC power and have at least one USB connected. If I disconnect everything from the USB ports, the noise continue for 3-5 second and stop. Well, it didn't stop completely, but occurs a lot less. The noise is also louder when the AC power is unplug... I don't know if it can be a problem with DC converter or something related to USB voltage or with the battery. However, even with the AC power connected, the noise is there and annoying...![]()
It seems to happen a bit more when at least one app is open (I open Sonar, a digital audio software) even if not doing anything. All CPU are running low, average between 1-5%, no anti-virus running.
I made a recording of the noise. I put I microphone under the laptop and unplug the AC power and replug it later. The noise has frequency at 8khz and 16khz. you can hear it in this file :
http://www.abacom.com/~ivanohe/temp/asus_high_pitch_noise_on_off_acpower.zip
The noise is not louder than the fan for example, but the fact that it has a high pitch and not constant is very irritating (like having a mosquito in the ear) when working in a quiet environment.
I would like to know if other people noticed this and if this is a "normal" sound from the G73 ?
Thanks,
Yves

I also experience the same issue with my G73JH-A2. For me its exactly the same noise from the same area and the noise only starts while I'm running Autodesk apps.
-
Its from the voltage regulators...
-
Do all the G73 voltage regulator do this noise ? Maybe they forget to put some epoxy or glue to damp the high frequency vibration on some units....

Hello.
I'm from Portugal, I've a Asus G73-JH and the same problem.
I almost don't detect the noise with the AC plugged, but unplugged makes my head explode!
Thanks -
Hi,
Some month ago, I sent the Asus for repair to attempt to fix the noise and they change the motherboard. However, the noise was still present after that. The next week, a burglar broke in my house and steal the laptop, so now, I don't have it anymore
However, I had time to find some kind of workaround before it was stolen. That noise was possibly caused when the cpu or gpu speed step down (dc converter need to feed different voltage). I found that having certain application running get rid of the issue (almost). If I remember, playing an mp3 file with media player (volume to 0) stop the noise. Also, another software I had stop it. It is a free application named zone mobius (music looping tool). Just having it in background kill the noise. There should be other apps having the same effect. However, since they possibly prevent the cpu to step down, the battery life might be reduced.
I also found a good way to hear the problem was to go in the ATI control panel in the menu where there is a movie of a flag. That page/tab seems to cause the noise more than others.
BTW : not all people have a hearing good enough to be annoyed by this kind of issue. For example, my wife was completely unable to hear this high pitch noise when I was doing some testing. For me the noise was very obvious, I was able to hear it at 10 feets doing a blind test, asking my wife to make it happen randomly by plugging/unplugging the AC and checking my success rate. -
Hello.
I've changed the motherboard but it still noises... -
Many of the Asus laptops have the chirping high-pitched noise problem. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how you can easily fix that problem:

A GIANT THANK YOU!
PS: however the temperatures stay high, never decrease, at least for high performance, that's not good... -
I'm so pissed!
Brand new Asus G73JW here, I did weeks of research before getting it.
Same problem, high frequency buzzing noise on and off at random, much worse on battery as the original poster stated, same exact problem as he described.
It is VERY VERY annoying, it gives me headaches and I'm pretty sure it is pretty unhealthy being exposed to it for long.
alyokel37's solution solves the problem, but the CPU fan starts spinning and your laptop runs warm, however I think that the FAN noise is the lesser of evil here.
When I bought the Asus O!Play I was shocked on how low are the standards at Asus, the OS software written for it is super laggy and bugged, I thought to myself well it's a low budget box its acceptable.
Now I get this Asus laptop and the amount of bloatware installed on it initially is unbelievable, what were they thinking? I spent an hour trying to remove it, some won't remove and I ended up corrupting the OS, fine! I reinstalled the OS (Retail Win7 Ultimate this time), great, I install the Asus drivers and the whole time I'm thinking to myself, how can a company that makes (apparently) decent hardware makes such a crappy software, do they outsource to India? Their software and drivers are a complete joke, I would expect it from a lesser company but Asus is supposed to be huge.
Now this freakin buzzing noise really makes me regret buying this laptop, I will probably sale it for a couple of months and I am breaking my relationship with this Taiwanese company forever.
A company that makes such low quality software can't possibly make good hardware.
That's the difference when you buy an Apple, the OS out of the box is "perfection", that's why so many people that are less computer savvy are going with Apple, because of companies like Asus. (I know they don't make the OS, Windows 7 to me is close to "perfection", but Asus have no sense of appeal) -
thanks

Edit: aah this locks the cpu at default multiplier so it runs hotter and temps stay high.. -
Maybe you could try this.

It also should help against such noises.
