    Hey guys,
I am about to send my Asus G73JH A-1 in for RMA because of the constant overheating and stuff. Now I was wondering if I can just get this hard drive to backup my complete hard drives from my laptop: Hard drive

And can I just use Windows Backup & Restore to do the backup process?

    Thanks

Thanks a lot Josea. I will buy this HD now. I hope the RMA process will pass quickly. I want to play my games so badly :(

From what I read you should avoid installing the backup software that comes with the drive, a few have reported problems with the software.

Also, I also found this :
However it's powered by a slow 5400 RPM rpm drive and WD hides this fact. There is absolutely no mention of this limitation on their website! It's as slow as a medium notebook hard drive and slower than my old MyBook Essential 500GB 7200 rpm. It locks up for about 30 seconds at a time when watching HD movies or downloading torrents.

Therefore it will be slow doing your backups. I also use a slow (5400 RPM) HD for backups, but never try to play movies directly from the external HD.

Ok thanks again :) I won't use that backup software. Well I bought this HD already, since it was pricey. So I am not sure if I understand it completely.

Since it has 5400 RPM it will be slow as but other than that there are no limitations i.e. in quality right?

Are you planning on leaving your hard drives in the laptop? I just whipped my ones out of my first JH before sending it in for RMA. They didnt mention it at all.

Yes I am planning on leaving them in that's why I wanted to do a full backup of them. I just don't trust those people there haha.

If you take them out you wont need to backup or buy an extra HDD though? I just whipped mine out and once I got it back stuck em back in. No hassle. Its been known for them to send them back as factory with all data lost so its best to take them out.

Yes true but I figured that this extra HDD is the best solution for me since I can use it for backups from now on. Thanks for your help :)

At least all the crap from my HDD will be gone now :D

If you only have one HDD at the moment by all means yes its best to have 2 in the JH I use my secondary for all my vital information. Make sure you get a 7200RPM drive though or copying to and from and loading times will be really slow if you go for the 5400RPM mentioned. They are quite cheap.

Ok that really sucks since I ordered this one with 5400 RPM. :(

I really should have waited a bit longer but I just saw the price and it got me :(

Other than the long time I don't have any disadvantages with the one, mentioned HDD right?

    Thanks :)

It will work fine no problem at all just dont install games/programs onto it or you will notice the load times being affected 7200RPM is the minimum these days really I notice a big difference from my old 5400RPM against my current even if it is only a small increase in speed.

Yup. you'll notice the slowness of the 5400RPM. It's nothing to make you grind your teeth though. It's inconvenient at worst.

Ok guys I am doing the back up now, but I live with some other people and I don't want them be able to access my laptop. When I lock the computer will the back up process stop? Sorry, that's probably a stupid question. :(

It shouldn't, just make sure it won't go into standby or hibernate due to the power settings. There aren't that many stupid questions, however, there are a lot of questions that can be answered with a simple google search :p.
