Hi,
Ive seen some mixed opinions on how well the 5970m on the JH handles large open world scenarios like in a flight sim.
I've been trying to get DCS A-10C and World running well on my G73, but im not able to get more than 20fps on a good day, with stock clocks, and minor tweaks in radeon pro.
Im also runnning windows 8 and 13.1 drivers.
Has anyone gotten either one of these games running over 25fps on their G73? I'd like to know if its just my laptop or not, as it seems that it should be able to handle DCS A-10 no problem.

which flight sim are you talking about? i couldnt run flight sim X on my 675m with 3610qm properly, because i think imcompatibility issues with windows 7 64bit

Also, do you have any other games for performance comparison to rule out a driver or hardware issue? -
I'm playing with just about every setting on low, msaa of, no hdr aa or tsaa, catalyst is set to application controlled on everything.
I disabled HT which gave me a bit more frames (average is 21fps). Already had done the core parking fix for 8 and disabled page files.
I'm running 13.2 beta drivers. In other games I'm getting good frame rates, GW2 I can run at medium settings and BF3 pretty much medium as well for 30fps in multiplayer. Even arma 2 runs better for the most part than any of the DCS games. Still I've heard of much better performance on stock for pretty much all these games.
I've also had the 93 od vbios since I've had the laptop.
I've checked the CPU usage and GPU usage for DCS, and in a fully loaded mission I see 20% CPU usage and 50% GPU (reported by Task Manager and Msi Afterburner respectively).
Also to clarify I do not over clock. I have all the tools to do so but don't. There's been no damage to any of the internals, I clean the laptop out regularly with an air duster, temps are normal as well as clocks on the card itself. -
Try grabbing the latest CAP file for Catalyst. They contain preset optimized settings for games.

Well good news.
I've identified the culprit, a vBios flash, apparently a bad one.
So when i first got the laptop I had the GSOD error, like everyone else.
Flashed the updated vBios, like everyone else.
Played games on the laptop for a year, like everyone else.
At some point something must have happened, or maybe I had tried a reflash, but since i switched games around so much I never noticed that the damn GPU never went over 60%, never.
So here's what I did.
Uninstalled 13.2 drivers, rebooted to safe mode and used driver sweeper, ran twice and rebooted to safe mode twice to make sure it was nuked.
Rebooted and flash 213 Bios that i already had to make sure a setting was not the case.
Re flashed the vBios, using the official one provided on the Asus ROG forums. (that one)
Booted Windows 8, BSOD.
Tried Again BSOD...
Third Time, usually works...BSOD
Insulted my G (usually fixes alot)...BSOD
Hugged my G...BSOD
At this point, instincts told me I was screwed.
Last chance, pop in windows 8 dvd and see if it works long enough to Refresh the pc, and it did.
So now my pc was "refreshed", all drivers gone, all software removed, but my files were still there so good (if you didnt know that Refresh does a good job of getting close to a clean install without wiping drives)
Installed all the drivers, including 13.2 again, worked fine, rebooted.
Magic moment. At this point my G was thinking "To BSOD, or not to BSOD. Not to BSOD"
And there I was, everything had been overwritten, fresh vBios and Bios, time to test it out.
DCS A-10: High settings, 30fps average
Arma 2: High, 30fps average
Really made a difference.
My guess is that I probably reflashed somewhere down the road when I had power/Battery issues. When i reflashed the same vBios all of the elements, numbers, versions, so on were exactly the same. If i would have thought to copy the current bios and done a checksum they would have been the same.
So all in all, the only real change was a vBios flash that fixed everthing. I reflashed just the mainboard BIOS twice before this operation with no effect. -
I had similar problems at first but a vbios made everything better.
