    Hello guys,

I have a couple of problems with my G73JH today. I was trying out CitiesXL 2011 yesterday night, and my laptop died twice. Thermal shutdown, I suppose, as today I discovered that my laptop idles at around 75 C ( )

Which scares the hell out of me

And so I found this guy's post here who also has a similar problem, and I saw a Catalyst 11.7 link somewhere on the forum... So I tried downloading the Catalyst Package - the one that is 1.1 mb, which should be downloading the main thing. But, mine crashes right at the start-up. I have a giant problem with my GPU overall, hence whenever I try to open CCC, it crashes right away. Anything  related to the GPU crashes whenever I try to open it. And the only driver I can install safely is something like 11.1 which is ancient.

    Help me out please?

Ok firstly high temps are not your drivers. Drivers make a minor difference to your temps. Have you flashed your GPU with the latest VBIOS version?

To fix your driver problem just uninstall CCC and the driver and run drive sweeper to clear out all of the ATI files and restart.

You will then be back to a standard VGA driver.

Install the latest 11.7 drivers from scratch. The link is the entire package do not just install the separate parts the WHQL will install everything you need.

Once this is done and your back to normal you need to fix your problem.

Run Hwinfo and check your sensors which will give you temps across the board Hwinfo will also show you if you have a problem with the fan if it is not running or not running correctly it will show here. If you see 75oC at idle which is very high you will be hitting load of 110oC or even higher which will result in thermal shutdown.

Your immediate fix is to blow compressed air in the fan vents as it would sound like you have a blockage.

If this does not work although it should initially your only option is to repaste either through RMA or by doing it yourself. Personally do it yourself especially if you are out of warranty and I personally recommend ICD with the pea method. This is something you can research on after doing the above ^

Only Repasting the CPU (breaking the seal) will void your warranty unless you damage it and the warranty does not cover accidental damage.

    Cheers for the advice Dallers,

I did remove all the AMD Display stuff, and did get back to the VGA. But I still faced the same problem while installing the Catalyst Software Suite. It just crashes right after I click "Start Download" - via Windows style, I mean "blah blah stopped responding, if you found a solution - deal with it"

So I'm now downloading the files from your link, I'll keep you in touch about what's happening, if you don't mind.

Don't think I have any compressed air here, as I'm still out of the country, so I'm thinking... Vacuum cleaner? Muahaha. But, seriously, I'm using a vaccum cleaner to clean out my G73JH. Wish me luck? ;)

    Luck has been wished for.

    **EDITED****

Try getting Air to move the dust out...

A straw can be used to force the Air into the vents...

Use the drivers above ^^ and that should do the trick. Have you got the latest Vbios?

A huff and a puff like the big bad wolf should also do the trick the only risk with that is blowing liquid into the laptop so make sure if you do that its not turned on ;)
