    Hi guys,

I just received my Asus G73JH the other day, and decided to try some games on it. I prefer benching a laptop based on game performance rather than arbitrary 3dmarks.

    Specs:
    Display: 1920x1080
    CPU: i7 720M 1.6Ghz
    GPU: ATi mobility 5870 1Gb GDDR5
    HDD: 2x500Gb 7200rpm

    Test:
Everything was tested under the stock conditions. I did not overclock or changed any drivers. This is literally out of the box.
All tests were done at native resolution (1920x1080)

Call of Duty 4 - Max Settings

    Minimum: 46
    Maximum: 93
    Average: 63.71

Probably my favourite FPS to play, gameplay was completely smooth no lag in sight. Since this is a fast paced FPS game maintaining a high frames per second is crucial in doing well.

Modern Warfare 2 - Max Settings

    Minimum: 40
    Maximum: 91
    Average: 61.59

Pretty much the same as COD4, completely flawless. This isn't surprising considering its the same engine.

    Bad Company 2 - High Settings (4xAA)

    Minimum: 10
    Maximum: 40
    Average: 29.74

First of all this was played on pretty much max settings and it looked great. The game was completely playable and maintained a frame rate of 25+ for the majority of the game. There was a few moments where it dropped down to 10 when I was in the middle of a tank battle, but this only lasted a couple of seconds.

    Bad Company 2 - High Settings (2xAA)

    Minimum: 17
    Maximum: 47
    Average: 34.508

Lose the 4x anti-aliasing in BC2 and watch your frame rate skyrocket.

    AV1611 out.....

Isn't 25+ fps the ideal framerate?

Because the human eye won't tell the difference between 25 and 60.

The human eye doesn't use "frame rate" to interpret the fluidity and sharpness of a video. For example, you can watch a video clip of a slow moving fog at 10fps and it will appear silk smooth and alternatively, if you watch a video that alternates between black and white screens, you will see flickering even at 25fps. In other words, if you have a game that uses widely contrasting colors, it'll be better to have higher fps.

Given that, it is often pointless to see games playing at over 60fps as your screen's refresh rate physically limits the fps that is being produced. Most laptop screens are 60Hz which means you will at most see 60fps. Some may be 120Hz and with those screens, watching fast and alternating high contrast images will usually be flicker-free.

As long as it doesn't bother you and you can play, do what you want.

Some like 50+ FPS only. I'd ignore that personally, just play whatever makes you enjoy the game.

Play whatever settings that make you happy.
    - Personally I have set configs to DX11 only, high settings, medium shadow, HBAO on and no AA. And have edited my FOV to 49 (78 degrees).

About the same, except for med effects, and HBAO off. Average about 60FPS. Can't afford to lag for half a second on the battlefield. :D

The Best Buy Model with the 1600x900 screen plays BC2 with 4X AA and everything turned to MAX at around 52FPS. I drop to about 31 when it gets really bad with particles.

    YAY LOWER SCREEN RES!!!

The new AVP Benchmark at default settings at 1600x900 gets 34.1FPS.

I was upset at first with not getting a 1920 model, but hell if Im getting this much of a performance increase, then the 1600 is fine by me :)

why why why?? whats the reason for these low FPS in BC2 and Alien vs Predator??

what is the bottleneck in this case? the i7 1.6GHz processor? or the ATI 5870?

i wanna play at high settings, 1080p, AA off and still get 30+ FPS on average; i need th esystem to be future proof, these games are getting kinda old. i think we will weep when crysis 2 arrives.

am disappointed so much. think i will not buy the G73jh anymore.

Well good luck with that. Considering laptops tend to lag about 6-12 months behind desktops for graphics power, and high end games are targeted with their ultra graphics settings that are 6-12 months away from current high end hardware... You'll be waiting a long time

Also, there is *always* something new coming out. So when you buy a laptop, get what you need, when you need it. Futureproof if you can, but remember that 2 years out, the g73jh and g73jw will both be in the same category of graphics processing capability. Sure, one might get you 1-2fps more ... but when the difference is between 15 and 16 fps, it doesn't matter how "futureproof" your laptop is.

It's no use replying to that post. Seriously, don't even bother, sometimes gotta know when to reply and be informative and other times realize, it's hopeless.

    how nice of you ziddy.

by future i meant Fall 2010 and not 2 years from now where it is pretty obvious that jh or jw wouldnt matter anymore, fall 2010 when the next gen games are coming out and when, based on current benchmarks, the g73jh is gonna start lagging at full settings, in my opinion. so why shall i order now and get it here mid-summer if it can't run the fall games at high settings with AA off. that was the point.
Since you like to turn everything into arguments and taking sides u interpreted stuff ur own way it seems, u got a prejudgemental ego and u like to flame and thats how u do it.
too bad some of ur posts are pretty informative..guess that's the natural way of how things balance themselves out; good ideas but mediocre personality.

Its the GFX card. 1920x1200 is pretty intense.

Thats why the BB 1600x900 is more future proof. It will play games at good frame rates longer.
