I am having tons of problems with this laptop, this will be a bit long of a post so please bear with me.

Bought the laptop from a friend and it worked for about 6 months. This last week I turned it off for the night after updating drivers and such so I can play Guild Wars 2. I went to turn it on and the power button plus the keyboard all light up but I get no video on the LCD screen. When I plug up a external CRT monitor to it I get splash screen etc but when it tried to boot into windows I get BSOD. It will allow me to go into safe mode but not regular mode.

I did some reading and initially thought it was that video driver for the 5870 that was causing problems so I clean installed Windows 7 updated Bios and Vbios to the current versions all on a external monitor because the LCD still wont show anything. I then installed 12.1 ATI drivers and then restarted but when I boot into Windows I stutters and freezes for a couple seconds and I keep getting a error message saying a ATI driver has failed.

I did another clean install and still my LCD will not come on but external still works. I went to the Asus website and got the video driver they had there and installed it and rebooted and all of a sudden the LCD comes on. I then go about installing the rest of the drivers and when I restarted the LCD again did not come on. It seems to work if I unplug the laptop then take the battery out for 30 secs and put back in the LCD will come on first try or after turning off and on a couple times.

I spent a good deal of money on this and will post any info needed to help solve these problems. Thank you all.

Edit: When I do get the LCD to come on and get it into safe mode because it wont launch into reg windows I get these weird vertical gray lines, but if I use the external monitor they dont show up. Sorry the picture is hard to see them but you can tell at the top of the window. Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting

Your hd 5870 is dying, though it can be repaired with a reflow or reball. You can tell it's dying from the lines and the video card driver not recognizing the video card.

There are a few places on ebay that will fix this issue, here's a link for that.

    ASUS G73 G73JH G73JW G73SW G74 G74SX G75SX LAPTOP MOTHERBOARD VIDEO REPAIR | eBay

Most laptops die from heat, it all has to do with lead free solder and excessive heat from the graphics processor.

After it's repaired install some monitoring software to monitor your temps, i bet your graphics card was over 100C for too long.
