I've had my g73 since september 2010 and i have it working great but i keep having a problem i hope some one on here can shed light to. I'm a big anime fan and download alot of anime series to watch. Due to my internet provider telling me i can't download my anime at peak times i leave my laptop on over night while my anime is downloading. I set my laptop to dim and turn the screen off after 15 minutes and have turned hibernate off so my downloads can be finished by the morning but somtimes when i come back to my laptop and move the mouse nothing happens. It has locked up and i have to hold the power button down to restart. This does not happen all the time and it only happens to lock up at this point, never when i'm using it. What could this be and is there somthing i can do.

Can you check the event viewer for warnings / errors? This could help to find the cause.

You would need to disable both hibernate and sleep.

You can go to the control panel and type "event log" in the search bar. Then you need to go to windows reports and then system. You can post a copy of the log if you want so I can take a look at it.

I haven't installed an English version of Windows atm, so I'm not sure whether all the things are exactly called as described, but you should be able to find it.

svl7 ive looked at the system log in event view and there are no errors to be seen there.

The drives should not go to sleep as long as they're used anyway, I don't think this option will make a difference.

How long did you wait before you shut down the system? I sometimes have similar issues, but it resolves itself after 1-2 minutes...

Yes that is correct, What power scheme are you using in control panel - power? If it is one of the Power4gear scams (just kidding) try one of the basic windows options such as balanced. Also
have you checked all of the advance options such as lid closing?

I never close my lid unless on the move and use power4gear on high performance

    Plugged In

    sleep - never
    hibernate - never
turn off display - 20 mins
turn off hard drives - never

I mean when you get to the notebook after leaving it running the whole night, how long did you wait before shutting it down?

I guess you configured the laptop that the screen turns of after a while and when you return you move the mouse or so and the screen goes on again but everthing is frozen? Is it like this?

No the screen does not even wake after i ove the mouse. The keyboard lights are on and all other lights but if i move the mouse or press any keys its don't wake up. I have to hold the power button to turn off. This don't happen everytime.

umm, this is a wild guess, but what are u using to dl with? a manager? or just dling from the site? well anyway, whatever u are using, and if a sound plays when a dl is finished, it could be creative audio's fault if you never updated ur realtek drivers (since u dl over night, this could easily be missed).

If ur sure no sound is ever playing while u dl, only thing I can suggest is updating power4gear, or perhaps try the lockup fix in my signature but that usually applies to certain cases so be sure to read it. Ignore the harmful warning. Make sure u are on bios 211 as well.

I have the latest bios, vbios,power4gear and no sound is played from utorrent. It never locks up when i'm using the laptop, only when it is left and the screen goes off. This don't happen everytime, i'd say once out of 5 times.

I'm out of suggestions then :(

it locks up sometimes when ur screen turns off...... well, only alternative I can say is maybe keep the screen on and instead use a screen savor, then like close ur lid half way but not all the way.

Are you running the latest video drivers? If you are running 10.12, it could be causing you problems. You could try either upgrading to 11.1 or downgrading to 10.10 to see if the problem goes away. I was getting a crash dump every so often due to 10.12. Not every time and always after the screen went to sleep. It sounds similar. I upgraded to 11.1 Cats and haven't had another incident.

I was running 10.12 jody so i'll update to 11.1 and try that. Like i said it does not lock up everytime the screen goes off but maybe once or twice in 5 when screen powers down.

Well i upgraded the ati drivers to 11.1 and everything seemed to be well untill today. I left my G73 on while i went to pick my wife up and when i came back the screen had turned off so i moved the mouse and the screen failed yet again to come on but today was different. The mouse would not work but when i pressed a button on the keyboard it woke up, any other time the laptop would fail to wake even with a key pressed. The mouse would not move the cursor so unplugged the mouse out of the usb port and plugged it back in but the mouse still would not move the cursor. I plugged my external hard drive in and turned that on and that would not work too. Don't understand why this would happen.

Your very detailed with your descriptions. ez to understand xD But I must say, that is very bizarre. This would suggest that your drivers stopped working maybe.

But whats bothering me is a button from the keyboard turned ur screen on. What about other functions? did ctrl alt delete work? alt tab? turbo boost button? etc?

but even if u try these things, I can't really offer any suggestions that may fix this..... Perhaps try ati driver ver 10.8 that I'm on which has been stable for me...

This seems like your GPU driver stopped working, check the event viewer to be sure, should be in the system protocols... something like "atikmdag.sys stopped working" or so.
