LOL, judging from this forum alone, I would think that refurb stock would be enormous. I would think that they'd start showing up at sites that carry them any time now, but there's not been any official word of such.

Refurbs can be just fine, as long as you're not expecting something t obe cosmetically perfect.

I never i'd see as many problems reported in a forum for a Windows laptop. I thought only mac buyers were so vocal with new products. Most people have no problems but there are Enough to create a decent refurb pool.

    Cheers,

Whats even scarier is that G51VX is still selling as a refurb on multiple sites. i hope the g73jh isn't a dud like that laptop.

My g51vx was AWESOME. I should *never* have returned it to get a g51jx.

I picked up my G51vx refurb. a couple weeks ago. Was in pristine cosmetic shape, only problem was GPU was getting too hot. Took it into the shop where I got it and they swiped the thermal paste and now everything is smooth sailing.

I'm toying with the idea of selling this and getting a G73, but man this thing is big enough on my lap when i'm on my bed O_O

yea i would def. return it man, that thing is already outdated. I returned my gateway in december when it just came out. because i knew the new i5-i7 chips were comming out and new dx11 cards. You at least want dx11 support so even if the card is old you can still play games on medium to low settings.

AFAIK, Asus does not offer any extended warranties for refurb units.

I bought a G50VT refurb at best buy last year for $699. It was flawless and looked 100% new.

My GF used it for a year until I just recently got her a G72 and the resold the G50VT on ebay for $525 so lol I got a year out of it for $175!

The way your spark post was written it seemed to be a static electricity issue during your attempt at making the physical VGA connection.

I don't see how driver software could cause an electrical problem. Then again, I'm not an electrical engineer or hardware interface developer.

What? No, it's not a bad buy at all. Especially if he gets it at a decent price. Considering the relevant tech advances, a g51vx (especially with a p8700, not a t7450) will be a great computer for another 2 years. In two years, the performance difference between a g73 and a g51vx will be so small. Also, the g51vx (with the p8700) is technically faster in most dual threaded applications, turbo-boost notwithstanding.

Sure, it's not as "new". But it's still very, very relevant. Consider this: If you've got a p4 prescott, and a decent video card, you can still play most of the high end games coming out today. Those things are 7-8 years old! It's the video card that's most relevant for gaming, and hard drive which is most relevant for loading times. Processors are generally *not* the bottle neck, and the G51vx has a killer video card.

So what you're saying is, that you paid the same amount as an xbox, but only got to game on it for a year? I'd have bought an xbox (and kept it past the 1 year mark)...

    Really? Visit the dell/alienware forum.

Part of the reason there's a lot of traffic is because the g73 is a killer deal. If everyone got a low-end HP, who would want to talk about it? But if you got an alienware-level laptop for the price of a gateway ...

Do you guys think i should get a extended warranty for a refurbished g73jh-rxbb05? I mean if nothing is wrong with it in the 1st 90 days what are the chances of something happening to it?

Also, i've read alot of reviews of people re-doing their thermal paste, is this the thermal paste on the video card or cpu or both? Also, is this a common issue? I've never done it before so i don't want to try.

You could get a PSOD, or dead pixels, or some other component failure. Some have used BB's warranties to get new units after 3 years.

The warranty has Accidental coverage options, and people would get a newer laptop since in 3 years, they don't make the original unit.

Got my refurb G73 from newegg and aside from a clicking sound from the touch pad that I fixed myself with a piece of paper it's in like-new condition. Refurb prices are great too!

its only a 2 year warranty and 1 of those years includes accidental coveragem or else everybody would break their laptops in 3 years lol

i bought my g73jh as a refurb. it came as if it were brand new. i did abit of fix ups. but most were already done before i got the laptop. i bought my laptop from Asus G73Jh-RBBX05 Refurbished www.BTOtech.com. i had to import it but didnt take long. the bios was already at 209 and i didnt have any of the other bugs (the touchpad issues, drivers issues etc). when i got the laptop i just updated to 211 bios and updated vbios to 93. installed the 10.10 drivers from ati and i am a happy gamer. its never failed me yet. my subwoofer works fine.

Most of the "refurbs" will need a vbios update and possibly a repaste - since those are the two "problems" that they have - easily solved, really, and totally worth the $400 you'll save getting it refurbed.

I didn't. I got a warranty on my last laptop and didn't use it for the whole 3 years so I decided to go the no-warranty route. I want to re-paste the cpu at some point so that would void the warranty anyway. (I have all these justifications in my mind :])
Newegg was cool. I had myself on the auto notify list and as soon as it came in stock I grabbed it. They shipped it in a huge box with plenty of big bubble bags around it.

How much did it cost you to upgrade the CPU of the G51VX refurb? I first got the G51VX for less than $600 then, was contemplating of upgrading the processor for a faster model. Turns out it it will set me back another $300~ to get the CPU want. Then I saw G73 refurbs running for $800~, so for the same price I would upgrade the specs of G51vx, will almost sum up equal to the refurb G73.

    This is what I did!
Thermal Repaste, 128 Crucial SSD, keyboard color modification (blue), changed Wi-Fi Card, updgraded ram to standard 8 gb with 1333mz memory clock, second 500gb hdd, I think that's all!
Buyed extended warranty as well and now it's getting builded, can't wait to receive it!
And it also come with the so wanted 1600x900 resolution screen <3

now I've to read how to change bios/vbios and the clean instal process...

well if you are importing it to the UK i recommend you do add the asus 2 year global warranty. this is because the standard 90 day one, or the 1 year one that includes accidental damage is not valid in the UK. However, the 2 year global one is valid in the UK. That insurance only costs $90. i think its well worth it. Also depending on who your are buying from, they will also pay for round trips to get you laptop repaired.

I got my refurb from BTOTech with additional 2yr global warranty and imported it to UK. Should I receive some kind of "warranty extension code"? The sticker on the back of my g73 says "WARRANTY: 3M" but on sales order from BTOTech it says "2 Year Global Asus Warranty(2_Year_Global)". It's already been one year since I bought it, should I contact the seller? I want to RMA my g73...

You can try to set up the RMA, or have BTOTech do it for you.

yeah, this is what I did to, basically you should have an electronic invoice on your email (a bill like thing) since I guess you payed with paypal, am I right?
Basically you have to contact them, possibly attaching the invoice, then they should replay telling you what to do.

The only acceptable best buy model is the JH. I picked up mine when it was out of the 90 day warranty and its has been burned for 8 months straight and is solid as a rock.

If it is a refurb anyway you should be able to get a good price for it so that warranty is not worth paying extra for. Buy it, paste it, bench it.

$60 for a 2 year warranty? Who with?

Even so if you have ever gone through RMA and seen the destruction and condition they treat your laptop in you wouldn't bother with it.

If you had RMA'd before you would have a different point of view ;)

Plenty of time for that to change. Unless it catches fire I would fix it yourself.
