Hi
Hope someone can help out here....
Just ordered and received my new laptop....bought it from currys in the UK and according to their spec sheet it has a full 1080p 1920x1080 screen.
The model i received says HD+ on the side of the box and in display appearance/control panel/adjust resolution it shows max 1600x900?
Can anyone help out and compare the two?
Full model i have is G73JH-TY063V (its not the I7 version, comes with I5 430m,x2 320gb HDD and 4gb ram, blu ray rom combo)
Any advice guys - should i have a 1080p (as thats what i thought i was getting) and how do the to compare?
Thanks in advance
Steve

If 1600 x 900 is the maximum you can set it to in the display settings, then the spec sheet must have been wrong. I'd try and contact the reseller and return it, or get a refund if possible. It is their fault that you got a substandard unit, not yours, unless you accidentally read the wrong spec sheet, of course.

Have checked and double checked their specs and they DO say full 1080p - i have contacted the this morning about it and they are prepared to offer a discount (yet to be agreed how much).
I know i havent got what i thought i was ordering....although,im just wondering how much better or how the two compare....
Dont know how much they will offer as a rebate for the mess-up but need to find out how much better the 1080p is or how the 1600x900 compares.
HELP! -
replied to your other post m8, but I'll repeat here in case you dont see it.
I've read many reports in the forums, and some reviews, that the g73jh with the lower resolution, is nowhere near as good quality as the higher resolution screen. Many of these lower rez models came from Best Buy, although I thought they had the i7 cpu. I'm not certain if it's the same model as you ordered though, I remember the spec on the Currys site, and it was definitely the high rez screen, i checked that repeatedly myself.
Hope you get it sorted fast, let us know what happens. -
steviejones133: can you check the properties on the unit and see who made your lcd panel?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Will try and check the panel later and post back.....
From what Asus told me, certain models are made for certain suppliers/retailers that they feel they can target....the site i bought from deffo says its a 1080p screen but they are obviously wrong (unless i got a very random accident which i doubt - i assume they will all have 1600x900)
The screen itself looks good, only used the desktop but the wallpaper looks fine with detail etc
What does bug me is that i paid the money for the advertised spec and havent got what was listed....i wouldnt mind so much if i was wanting a 1600x900 specifically but i too recall looking at the specs and thinking...oohhh a nice 1080p aswell.
Im kinda in limbo at the mo as i gotta wait on Curr'y's getting back to me with an offer of compensation.....so bearing in mind i got this laptop :
G73JH
I5 430m
Blu ray rom dvd write
x2 320gb 7200's
4gb ram
ati 5870 1gb (and i checked it is lol)
1600x900 HD+ screen (so it seems)
All for £989
What i gotta see is how much cheaper they are gonna make it by giving me some money back - cant help thinking even with lower res, its still very cheap. -

If it were my order, and the unit was not as advertised, I would return it--period. You don't order a ferarri and get delivered a volvo station wagon. . to have the dealer say "well, maybe we'll cut you a deal"
I know some people don't mind. . I'm just picky that way: but it's something to think about -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
True, but if there is negligable difference (which is what im trying to establish here) then, if it makes the "ferrari" alot cheaper, then im all for a better deal....
I dont want to sacrifice performance in the same breath - if the 1080p is miles better, then she is gonna go back.
Will have to wait and see what you guys think about the two screens and how much they are gonna offer to compensate me by.
Have thought of telling them to get it shipped off to Asus (at their cost) for an upgrade - any one have an idea of costs for that?
-
-
Yeah, you should totally nail them for $200 or so. Tell 'em that you could have got the better version with the better screen for $200 - screen AND hard drive upgrades (or BDrom), bag and mouse .... so accepting $200 off for being denied all these things is an acceptable compromise.
-
There are seven models of the G73JH that I know of.
-A1: 1920x1080 screen, flagship model, two 500-gig hard drives, 8 gigs RAM, Blu-ray reader.
-A2: Same thing as A1 but DVD burner instead of Blu-ray.
Both of these models are available many places online and at ASUS retailers in the US. Some online retailers will custom-order components, which becomes expensive depending on what you add (or cheaper with what is removed?). You also get a backpack and a mouse for free with these purchases.
-X1: Same as A2, except only one 500-gig hard drive. This model is essentially the same thing with one empty hard drive bay. Available at Newegg.com
This is the one I bought and personally recommend for the price to features ratio. Newegg's comes with 1333 RAM where most models ship 1066. It is cheaper than the A-series for essentially the same thing. And a lot of people are modding theirs with solid-state drives in the other hard drive slot and swapping out the dvd burner for a third-party blu-ray burner.
-X2: I've heard of this model, but haven't seen it for sale. It is supposed to be the same thing as the X1, except it has the Blu-ray like A1. Essentially, it is A1 with the single hard drive.
-X3: Same as X1, except there are two 320-gig hard drives. Basically an A2 with crappier drives. Available at tigerdirect.com
-RBBX09: This is similar to the A2, but it has a 17.3" 1600x900 HD+ display.
-RBBX05: Same screen as RBBX09, 6 gigs of RAM instead of eight, single 500-gig hard drive.
Both of these models are available only through BestBuy in the US.
My suggestion to the dude who posted this topic: There are MUCH better versions of G73 out there. Asus built a chassis that has the potential to hold a lot of different stuff, but the i7-720QM is standard on all of the above machines. I paid less money for mine than you did yours, google currency exchange notwithstanding. My suggestion is return it for a full refund and try to get your manufacturer to get a better model - or take your money elsewhere. Import if you have to. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
in which case it is AUO139E
Doesnt mean anything to me so someone enlighten me please! -
That looks like the number for the screen part of your laptop. Apparently it's similar to the Best Buy models I outlined above? If it's the same, it's HD+. 1600x900.
The GPU on this machine is nothing short of amazing. I can drive modern games in 1080 with no hitches. I highly highly highly suggest if at all possible you obtain a model with the 1080 screen. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
my model is g73jh-ty063v - googled it with limited results expect to find a german version ty042v which seemed only difference was i5 520m reviewed by notebookcheck.de i think.
Thing is, importing from the US is gonna cost me a load in UK customs charges, really making it a moot point.
The price of the flagship one in the UK is around £1800 - way more than you guys pay in the US! - id love one but my purse wont stretch that far.
The one i have currently is the only other version in the UK that i have seen and as i dont think Asus build to order, im stuck with either one or the other.
Bummer being one cost £800 more and im trying to justify the additional expense. For what i intend to use it for, im thinking I7 720qm is overkill....i dont plan on storing huge volumes of data, (640gb ample for me moreso they are 7200's)
I did want a blu ray drive (which i got)
4gb seems sufficient for normal useage - can always be upgraded later o if needed.
I was very concerned re the gpu - when i saw it in this model for under £1000, it made me take note (one of the reasons i bought it really)
Apart from the resolution, i think i have the ideal spec for what i need - appreciate that the top end is better but why spend another £800 if im not gonna use it? -
There are a whole lot of advantages to keeping your current model.. I agree that even with an HD+ screen and the lesser processor that I can reasonably assure you that it is a superior product for a killer price. If you're sure you have the 5870, it will satisfy all of your video needs.
What you pretty much have here is a case of the merchandiser advertising incorrectly, knowingly or not. It's up to you and them as to how to resolve the issue.
I hope it works well for you and if you keep your G73 laptop, I hope take as much satisfaction in it as I do mine. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
cheers big
Im thinking if i can get the overall cost of my current one down to £800 / $1165 then for what i have (all be it 1600 x 900 and not 1080p) then i have a great deal!
Ans yeah, have checked hardware and its deffo ati 5870 1gb gddr5 so, apart from wanting an i7 (overkill for me) and lots of memory (again overkill for me but upgradeable as is he cpu if need be) i have a very capable laptop for a great price.
Think i will try and haggle the retailer down as much as possible as it looks like it would cost over £1400 / $2000 in total to get the a1 by the time ive paid UK duty etc.
Thanks for your replies and im sure i will enjoy whatever i settle on - it will be a g73 thats for sure ! -
Steviejones133: You can upgrade the screen if you wish to. The AUO model is the least liked one here in the forums, but again, if you are happy, then by all means enjoy. The 1080p screens are made by Hannstar, and here's an example site selling replacement screens:
ASUS G73JH compatible Laptop LCD Screens. Brand-new (never used).
If you cannot replace it yourself, or cannot follow the online guides, then I'm sure a repair place can do it for you. Just an idea if you are concerned. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I would consider upgrading at that kind of cost - not sure i would do it myself as would void the 2 yr Asus warranty.
Do you know what make of screen Asus put in the A1 version? - im thinking of getting my seller to have the laptop screen professionally upgrade by Asus as my "compensation" for their mis-advertsing. That way, it wouldnt void the warranty on the laptop itself (have no idea how much Asus would charge for this so input welcomed - will have to speak to them i guess) -
-
Along with the X3 I would guess?
Are all the 1080p screens LED Hannstars? -
x2 reporting in with 1920x1080 led hannstar screen, hardware id hsd06a5. as far as i'm aware, all g73 1080p screens are hannstar.
-
How do you guys check who is the manufacturer of the screen?
-

Yup, X3 has the same screen.

Hi Chastity
I have ben in touch with Asus UK and they have told me that they wont do any upgrade wahtsoever. In fact, they told me that even if i sent the laptop in, it would have the same screen put back in it as its down to manufacturers specification - they wont upgrade at all even if i wanted to pay extra! - couldnt beleive it!
There is light at the end of my tunnel though....i wont say too much at the moment but i will post back with the outcome...all i can say is that it is looking promising at this point in time.
I would like to ask the forum about the apparent issues with these screens.
i) are they limited to screens of 1600x900 res or have people found the "poor" screen in 1080p format also?
Seems to me that people experienceing this problem (from USA) have bought from Bestbuy. Can anyone say that they have had a poor screen if they have ordered elsewhere?
From my research, it seems that Bestbuy only offer a max resolution of 1600x900 - is this right?
My concerns being that if i re-order the g73 version with i7 / 8gb / 1tb 7200's that i may experience the same "poor" screen issue?
Good to know if anyone that HASNT bought from best buy have ecperienced any problems with their 1080p screens.
Thanks again folks!
Much love goes out to y'all (sorry for my lame americanism lol)

Hello Steve,
I'm in uk and was wondering how you did negociate the price: Dixons/currys show a price of 1099 pounds. Any tip?
Thanks

I managed to find an online voucher code that actually worked!...through hours of trawling the net i found a code to enter in the checkout (10MAY) and it deducted 10% off the price which made it a great bargain.
Dont know if its still valid but if not, may be worth a call to currys/dixons to see if they would honour it.
One thing to point out though (and a BIG thing) is that the screen resolution they advertise of 1920x1080p was incorrect.....i ordered mine and it arrived as 1600x900 HD+ and not full HD.
I returned mine after a bit of a battle with them about trading standards etc.
Not that i wasnt happy with it (as i was very happy apart from being misled about the screen which still looked ok in my opinion) - i just wanted the full 1080p as described.
I wont say too much here until my issues have been successully resolved/finalised but i will go as far as saying they were very good and im certainly not complaining with their proposed rectification of their error.
Dont let my issues put you off buying an otherwise great laptop - if your happy with 1600x900, then its gotta be the best way to won a g73 in the UK for that kinda money. -
Cheers, -
Cheers for the reply im not to bothered about the screen resolution just need to find that voucher code....Wish me luck

THing is, if you dont ask, you dont get! -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
just found this one.....its not as much (only 5%) but it does work. Just tried it.
Enter MAY5 in the box for codes BEFORE you checkout and pay....its worth £55 off at least! -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Actually, just got another.....bit more off....use MAY6 and you get 6% off = £66 ringing it down to £1,033.99!
(Also just noticed that currys have ammended their info on screen resolution....now appears correctly at 1600x900) -
-
Just hope there's a way to get the LG screen in UK. Ejay let us know if you get yours.

What do you think about it? I'm affraid has I only have comments and didn't see one.
-
By the way, where do you find your vouchers? A quick search was not enough

steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
As far as my screen goes (i returned it simply as the spec was advertised incorrectly and i wanted a full 1080p screen) i would say it looked good!
I didnt really "test" it out much ut colours seemed to be quite good and bright...i thought the viewing angles could have been better but im just goinig on limited experience....my last lappy had a matt screen and the asus one was glossy-ish.
I think you can "tweak" it using Win 7 home premium screen calibration in display manager although i didnt get round to playing with it before i had to return it.
I really cant comment on how it compares with LG or Hannstar screens talked about on here, just seem to hear that they are better but by how much and who's "eyes" your looking through is questionable. -
Just touching base that as far as I have read, and my own experiences, there have been zero complaints about the 1080 res screens ASUS put in the A1/A2/X1/etc. The other LG/AUO screens are where the debate started up. I consistently get compliments about how good my screen looks, and I agree- it's by far the best I have owned, and while may not be the best available, is definitely an excellent screen.

steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I dont know if the UK equivalent (G73JH-TZ008V) which is the same as the A1, has had any coimplaints.....would be interesting to hear if any one else had any input on UK 1080p versions.
What make are the 1080p's in the a1 2 3? -
arghghggh
I've been so close to pushing the button and buying the Curry's one, the ty063v, but I'm really worried about getting a poor quality screen. I'm more than happy to have the 1600x900 resolution, but it's got to be good quality.
As far as I can tell, the ty063v has the same screen as the Best Buy model. Is there anyway to be sure of getting a good quality 1600x900 screen in a g73jh? In the UK that is, as far as I know there's nowhere in this benighted country where you can see one in person
I'd get the 1980x1050 model, but I just cant pay £1800, thats outrageous, and double what they charge in america, just to rub salt into the wound -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Cant see one to compare against the other...i know i had the 1600x900 and thought it looked ok but im no expert....i kinda went on the reviews here and ended up sending it back because im in the same dilemma as you.
I didnt want a poor screen (even if it looked ok to me, i know that due to reviews on here it could be better)
