Hello. After about an hour or so of playing the new Call of Duty Black Ops my G73 goes completely blank and shuts itself down. After logging temps i found after trying again i got to

And then my computer completely shuts off due to the internal temperature BIOS thing i believe.

Is it normal for my GPU to be reaching 110C after an hour of Black Ops?

No it is not normal. You need to either repaste the gpu or rma it.

Definitely check that your fan is still working normally and do clean your vents. You can think about repasting after that.

I saw lot of comments on newegg on laptops having 5870. The solution is usually upgrading the video Bios. Did you explore this?

Best advice you can get: Get ready to do a repaste, you prob also need to clean the vents with some compressed air, that I bet will help but you need to repaste.

If you are not confortable doing it, might consider RMA, but there are plenty of threads that will guide you thru. I did mine and everything went well. Temps drop considerable after applying the repaste and I got a chance to clean the Heatsinks from the inside.

Also, on which BIOS are you. Bios 2.11 is more agressive on the use of Fans than the previous versions including stocks BIOS so that might help.

Also, check which version of Catalyst are you on. For some of us, there have been a reduction on temps (about 2 or 3 Celsius degrees less) since the 10.11 came out ( I went from 10.08 to 10.11)

There are plenty of threads about these subjects on the forum, wont take you long to find all the info you need.

Yeah, i'm getting heating problems too.
I plan to send it to get repasted with some AS5 which should lower temps alot. I shall also clean the fans etc out too! I can probably say AS5 is your best bet too!

    Thanks for all the tips guys. I just upgraded to the newest version of Catalyst 10.11. I plan to go out later today and buy some compressed air from the store. As far as repasting goes;

    1. How much does good thermal paste cost?
    2. Will this void my warranty in any way or remove my ASUS 360 protection?
    3. How difficult is repasting?

people need to stop posting this misinformation. the only change is that memio sensor isn't used and one of the other sensors is now used. Furmark reports the correct temperature and gpu-z will also show that the 3 sensors used and memio is still the higher temp.

Not trying to missiform, but I did notice changes in my temperatures, Hwinfo32 is giving me the temperatures in all sensors and at least for me these are lower, not by much as someone claimed on other thread (about 10 c. degrees) but around 2 or 3 C. degrees. It was quite noticeable for me as I was Idling about 60-62 Celcius (Memio) before 10.11 and now is 57-59 Celcius. And that is the only change I made to my laptop.

    1) You can get Innovative cooling diamond for 7-11$ shipped to your house, check the link in my signature.
    2) Repasting will not void your warranty unless you break something.
    3) Repasting is not difficult for the patient computer enthusiast. Just go slow. Most everything you need to know about repasting can be learned in the link in my signature. That link will also link to other good sources.
    4) As another member said, if you are running any bios other than 211, you should upgrade. 211 will also lower your temps.

The JW with the 460m has been shown to run a good deal cooler than the JH's 5870m and I believe they also revamped the cooling system further.

Either way, overheating issues in either model should not be commonplace.
