    Hello!

I bought my asus 2 - 3 months ago, ever since i bought it ive been experiencing freezes, stuttering and hickups.

By this i don't mean total freeze, but a 1 - 3 second freeze. This happens in: Windows, games(especially steam games) and when i watch movies(i use VLC)

It seems like this problem is getting worse, not only that but it's getting reealllly annoying. Ive tried to google it etc, but haven't found a solution yet.

The weird thing is that when i watch a movie it will freeze like 10 times in the beginning but as i get further into the movie it doesnt freeze at all. This also includes games. But when in windows it always freezes but only for like 1.5 seconds(still very annoying).

I found another thread about this on some site but there was no solution to the problem, but the guy who had the problem posted a video and he has the exact same problem as me, seems he has less stuttering than i do, but it's the same kind of problem.

Here is the video: Freeze sur WoW =x - Xfire Video

I really hope someone can help me with this, it's getting very annoying when everything is freezing every minute.

And for the info! Im not any good with computers so if you want to give tips try explaining what i should do etc.

    Specs:

Intel Core i7 Q720 1.60 GHZ with turbo

    6gig ram

    Radeon hd5870 1GB GDDR5

500gb HDD 7200rpm(think this is the problem)

    OS: W7 64bit

Btw! Sry for my poor english.

Is your computer the Best Buy model? If so it only has a 5400 rpm hard drive. I had the G73JH from Best Buy and had this same problem. It seemed to happen at random times and would freeze for 1-3 seconds exactly how you explained it.

From what I gathered from my experience, it was the hard drive causing issues. This may not be the case for you but people that had the same problem I did replaced their hard drive with a 7200 rpm drive and said it went away. Luckily I was still under the 14 day warranty and took mine back and replaced it with the G73SW.

I have a best buy model:BST7 and I get lockups in black ops similar too this but longer....doesn't happen in other games that I noticed...but I need to replace my 5400 drive with a 7200 one soon......then an SSD when I can afford it... :)...like others have said it's the hard drive

Im plugged in when i have this problem, and i don't think it has anything to do with my connection online, like stated in my first post it doesn't matter if im playing games or surfing, it happens anyway.

Im pretty sure i have the 7200 RPM.

    Any other ideas?

    EDIT:
Found the box that my computer came in, and it says outside: 7200R SSH SATA

Hmm, maybe i should try updating my BIOS? Because i still have the keyboard lag, and i really want to do it for the first time.

    I have version 209 atm.

Can someone tell me a step by step guide on how to update bios to 213? (Remember i have never done this before)

If you go out to the main Asus Gaming Forum page, the stickied post has the information you need to update everything. They do a good job of explaining what to do.

Black ops is just buggy. Don't be fooled by our 5400rpm drive. It is comparable to a 7200rpm drive because how dense it is.

OP I think your hard dive might be failing. I had the same problem in my old laptop and the hard drive was going bad.

just throwing this out there, but have you checked your power options and verified you're not somehow running on "Max battery" or similar that is limiting your hardware from achieving full "speed"?

Just checked the battery options, im running on high performance with everything set to 100%.

Could it be that if i update the bios the problem might go away?

    Ok,

Ive managed to update my BIOS to 213 without any problems(lucky me)

But still experiencing freezes etc :(

You said the box said SSH for the drive? I did not know JH came with that. I don't know much about SSD/SSH drives but I think that is where the problem is.

Test the RAM just for kicks.

What are the event logs? And can you recommend a program to test my RAM with? And what is SSH anyway?

Could be a defective harddrive causing the stuttering. Get HDtune and do a drive check.

    I have a feeling the G73jh doesn't like running games in DX9.

The 5870M has no problem running in DirectX 9 mode.

If your system came with Momentus XT drives, please update your firmware to SD24 to address some SATA lag/stutter issues with that model. (see the link above)

I prefer to make a bootable USB drive, and just copy the files I need, like my Seagate 500GB HDD package.

Hmm, are you sure it will work the same way with a bootable USB drive? The guy on the other thread doesn't mention anything about USB, that's why im unsure.

Are most USB memorysticks bootable btw?

Hi, I'm curious about updating the firmware of my hard disks. I have the regular Seagate 500 GB drives that came with my G73JH, and I was wondering about the firmware posted in the AsusROG forums by Chastity. How old is the firmware? And how do I check the two different checksums written below the link?

    1) The firmwares are recent.
    2) one is MD5, other is SHA-1

I have a 600 GB hard drive and mine is the JH best buy model.

Since it's not 500 gb, and I can't find the words Momentus XT anywhere about the drive, I'm assuming I'm safe? (I have some stuttering issues in Battlefield 2 and 2142)

Check your device manager (type "device manager" into the windows search area) for the specific type of hard drive.

If you google "ST9640320AS", that shows up as a momentus drive. Not an XT. For what it's worth.
