I have an Asus G73JH laptop which unfortunately took a fall off of my bed onto the floor while it was turned on.

I'm left with a variety of issues atm, here are the "scenarios"

    1. When pressing the power button it won't post at all

    2. When pressing the power button it will power up, but the scene will stay black. Sometimes the keys will respond (caps lock and such) and sometimes they won't. Boot logo doesn't show.

    3. When pressing the power button (usually after a day or so of leaving it alone) it will boot normally and function fine, and then randomly the screen will go black, sound will stop, and the keys and such will stop functioning. The machine is still on and giving power out (headset, mouse, keyboard, iphone charger, etc.) but it's unresponsive.

Not sure where to go from here, I opened it up and with my basic knowledge of the physical side of computers nothing seemed snapped/broken, as I thought it might have been a RAM issue. Let me know what I should try and do it fix it or any info you might need from it to diagnose it.

Edit: Should mention that my year warranty with Asus has expired, so repairs would have to be done either by me or some local repair store.

Sounds kinda nasty, if it was me I'd claim on my home contents insurance and get it repaired, but if you don't have that as an option...

You could follow the many dis-assembly videos and take it apart down to the motherboard, checking for obvious damage along the way. Once you get down to the CPU and GPU you may as well re-paste them while there, then reassemble and see if it boots.

Also, before doing that, why not try removing all the ram from the 3 accessible slots on the bottom, leaving just the single stick that is on the other side and see if that helps. Checking the hard drive(s) is/are still securely plugged in at the same time would be a good idea too.

I hope it's just a component that got knocked loose, otherwise could be a real pain to locate the problem. A lot of local generic computer repair stores are pretty inept, if you are confident to take the time and do it yourself I reckon there is more chance of a happy result and less incidental damage if you took it apart yourself. A repair store that is probably not that familiar with the g73JH is likely to snap off the audio plug, or bend the keyboard etc while taking apart, whereas you can do the research and avoid the common pitfalls.

Start here, and read.watch all the dis-assembly videos and written guides. Pay special attention to the audio plug!
