    Hi all,
I shut down my notebook last friday, everything was fine. Came back saturday, tried to turn it on, nothing happens. All I get is:

    1. power button lights up
    2. the 3 buttons right of the speakers (opp. the power button) light up
    3. blue led under the monitor is lights up as well.
    4. keyboard lights up briefly, for like 3 seconds
    5. no beeps, no asus logo, no asus sound, no windows login sound. Nothing at all.
    6. computer shuts down with one brief press of the power button, not the usual "hold down for 4 secs"

I read many threads and tried to flush it with no batt and no cord for 30 secs, pressed reset button, also dissasembled and removed battery from motherboard for a well over a minute. Same results.

I am pretty heartbroken. Got this laptop in the States, now I live far away, with no local Asus reps around, so RMA is not an option for me....

    Please help!
    Thank you all in advance....

Unfortunately, #5 indicates the problem is likely NOT with Windows, but more serious. #6 confirms it is likely Windows is not even loading.

You might try to reseat memory and HDD(s), but I think you'll ultimately need to seek repair for your system at a qualified local shop.

you dont want to reseat harddrives ,lol
but reseating memory may help you.
But I dont think it will do the magic , because if there is no memory present , your keyboard wont light up.
only option is to replace vga.

You mean to remove the ram sticks one by one?

I also repasted my vcard a year ago...
Sounds like I need a new video card, ouch.... that´s bad news...

If you get around to swapping the RAM sticks, note that the laptop won't post if sockets one or three aren't populated regardless of whether you have sticks in 2 and 4.

If swapping the memory around fails to bring any joy, a failed primary HDD that is no longer recognized by the BIOS can also prevent startup in the manner you describe. If you have a secondary HDD, put it in there and see if it posts and asks for a bootable drive. If it does, you know what you'll need to do...

nope, i did not enable fancy start. I never ever used the integrated media center/dvd player crap that you can use without booting windows either, but that doesn´t load as well.

Last night i tested swapping all three accesible ram modules (fourth one is on the back of the motherboard), no results there.

I swapped hdds as recommended, no results. But when I booted without them, the fans started full speed after a couple seconds... weird.

So evgsr2 suggests a toasted video card... what would be the symptoms of a toasted motherboard?

I dont think motherboard is dead, I bet it will be the vga.
you can buy an dell/msi/clevo 5870m all these will fit g73, and work without a problem but, with some cards, your fans will be at 100%.

Is the VGA port and HDMI port both controled by the ATI card or a secondary video controler?

All are connected to the MR5870, it is the only display adapter present in the laptop.

    I will try tonight!
So I need to dissasemble it to reach the GPU/CPU side and remove the big battery that seats on the motherboard right? How long would "draining down" the board take?

I will also test the RAM sticks swap more thorougly now that I know that slot #1 is the closest one to the board, going all the way to #3.

I hope any of this helps... I will keep you guys posted.
Thank you all for the good advice!

    No dice.
Dissasembled, removed motherboard battery, reassembled the whole thing many hours later. Same results.
I will research my video card buying options....

Thank you guys for the input and advice!

dstrakele I smell you like a guy from ROG, am I wrong?
btw: YOU should consider my advice when your stuck with blank screen problem ,BECAUSE IM A PRO in it.

I just had an Dell hd 5870m and sold it, you could find one on ebay , but if your going to buy an asus hd 5870m its going to cost you + its very rare to find.
I have seen some from ebay, go check there.

I knew I shoulda taken a shower before I got on this forum yesterday... ;>{)>

Yep, I'm not a Pro like you. Just another ASUS laptop owner like most of the folks here.

I did consider your advice, but have noticed many of the users who report a blank screen on startup (and get no video on an external monitor as well), later report they moved or pressed on the laptop or reseated the memory and HDD's - and then it started up normally and had no issues. So what appeared to be a dead VGA at the outset actually turned out to be something else. I thought it would be worthwhile to mention it in this thread.

I understand using any other 5870m on the g73 will cause the fans to spin at max speed constantly, right?

It make´s me sad to hear your a PRO in this particular field of ASUS suckery...

Same thing here with my SW. Im pretty sure its a loose lcd cord or something. I know this sounds weird, but turn it off, turn the laptop upside down and knock on the battery a little. flip it over and turn it on. I did this and every time the screen would turn back on.

Once in a while mine will not power on. (I shut it down every night and power down the power strip attached to the power brick). What 'fixes it' is removal of battery and AC cord, and pressing the reset pin hole on the bottom of the machine. This happens about 5% of the time.

Finally, after all this time, it seems it is fixed.
I bought a new (and very overpriced) HD5870m, did the cutting, gutting and stitching yesterday, and it worked!
Win7 failed to boot many times (with a blink of a blue screen and then automatic reboot) so I reinstalled windows from a USB stick and seemed to work fine. Reinstalled catalyst to config the card properly and cpuid HW monitor said it was idling at 56C, which seems fine, right?

I have a sound issue now, probably side offect of all those dissasemblies, but I´ll make a new thread for it.

Thanks to all for the feedback and tips! I appreaciate it.

Thanks ASUS for the bad thermal pasting, which lead to a self applied repaste, which probably lead to a fried GPU, which in turn lead to the purchase of and overpriced replacement GPU, all while NOT being able to use my laptop for 4 complete months, since I seem to live outside the area of coverage of your "worldWIDE" warranty. Seriously, thanks a lot. Hard learned lesson.
