No need to install the drivers of the camera, just run the Win7 update.

Yes a noob here, been reading the G73 threads for several weeks and now have one. YES, I have this EXACT same problem. Clean install of W7 Ultimate and now the same error message. Tried the download form Asus website-no good; asked Windows to search for a driver-again no good; and the driver from the Asus disc FAILS. Would welcome any ideas on how to fix this.

Well still looking for an answer. I tried to direct Windows to the driver and get the message: "Driver is not inteneded for this platform". Now how in the heck can that be? Need one of the guru's here to point the way, I am out of ideas.

    You could try this site:

    Chicony, (Sonix260)

The second one from the top should work:

Check the supported hardware id with the one listed in the Device manager...

    Goodluck!

Use software that uses a camera.

"LifeFrame" (FWIW) is the one that comes with the G73.

Turn the laptop over (DUH) :)

Seriously though, was the camera installed upside down? I don't see an option to flip the image vertically anywhere, nor do I recall ever seeing that option on any of my many cameras except in the software I wrote.

Mark...kinda doubt it is a hardware problem with the camera installed upside down. I (and arcadin) had a big problem trying to install the driver for the webcamera. I did a clean install (W7-Ultimate). When I went to download the driver for the camera from the Asus utility disk it would "FAIL". Then tried the Asus web site for the driver and again it would not install. My third attempt was getting W7 to locate an up to date driver and it said I had it already. Directed W7 to install it off my drive and got the message "Driver is not intended for this platform".

Hasbib was good enough to post a link to Sonix's web site with drivers. It loaded OK and the webcamera now works, but the video is upside down.

As luck would have it (and if I understand his posts correctly) Aracdin has gone throught the exact same problem from the beginning, solution and result (upside down).

And you are right, I too checked to see if the picture could be rotated and there is no option. So I am kinda stuck again.............

Right, and if that's the case then it's obviously software.

    Incorrect driver? Maybe.

Settings in camera capture software? Maybe.

There's no vertical flip option I see in LifeFrame, but other apps do have the option. I know - I write some of them and include the option.

Question: Is the image flipped (mirrored) vertically or rotated 180 degrees (difference being, if it's flipped/mirrored vertically then horizontally it's not reversed...if it's rotated 180 both horizontally and vertically it's reversed)?

If you're sure you have the right drivers and the camera was manufactured and installed correctly, then you only have your capture software to blame if you can't flip the image vertically.

Mark....if I am answering your question correctly, it is "flipped", or upside down. My head is pointing to the ground, but my left side still appears on the left and the right side on the right so its not 'rotated".

I have to believe the drivers are OK. Well, they are the only ones that have worked since the clean install.

That's rotated :) if you rotate that image 180 degrees, you would be right side up, and your left side would be on the right side of the image where it should be.

FWIW, I'm using the Asus driver for the 2.0M camera:

    Version V061.005.200.270
    Chicony_CNF_7246_CR Camera Driver for VISTA 64 WIN7 64 bit

The equivalent for the 1.3M camera is:

    Version V061.005.200.270
    Chicony_CNF_7129_CR Camera Driver for VISTA 64 WIN7 64 bit

(Both these drivers are on the utility/driver disk and on the Asus G73 downloads page)

If these drivers don't install then maybe there's an OS installed driver blocking - make sure there's no imaging device drivers installed and if there is, remove the drivers first.

Mark and Hasib...I think I got it fixed. Deleted the driver (the one I had just installed) through the Contol Panel, then ran CCleaner. I then uploaded the camera driver on the Asus web site ( arcadin..there are three, I downloaded the middle one). What is just not understandable is that I had been unable to download this very driver and I tried numerous times but it failed and why I posted here. The first succesful download of the camera driver was from the Sonix website in Hasib's link. After that I was then able to go the Asus site and get their latest camera driver which happily "corrected" the picture. Thanks to all....

arcadin...I spoke to soon. Turned on my computer today and tried LifeFrame, get message no device found. Tried to reinstall the driver from the Asus web site and get the same old error message. Then went back to the Sonix web page that Hasib linked and downloaded a driver from there which did work BUT now back to the picture being flipped. At this point I think this is an issue between the Sonix driver and W7-ULTIMATE. If you ask me there is something in the software of the Ultimate version that is causing this

if i remember correctly, the upside down issue can be fixed by editing a particular inf. File related to the cam. Google it, or look around in this forum, someone had the same prob n had it fixed, i remember reading abt it in the asus thread.

If the image is upside down, then you're not using the correct driver, here's what I said before:

there are a number of drivers (for Win7) in there, before you download and install one, make sure the hardware id in the driver matches that given with the webcam.

And if you still can't get it to work: here's something that Panzer06 wrote:

I have the same problem with an N50v.
I resolved it by editing the snp2uvc.inf file.
Open it with notepad and search for the word "flip".
    You'll see entries like this...
    "HKR,DefaultSettings,Flip,0x00010001,0 - and - HKR,Settings,Flip,0x00010001,0".
Change the last digit (zero) to a "1" to all instances.
Save the file and re-install your drivers manually from Device Manager.
Choose the driver to install, do not let Windows search for you.
Reboot and your video will be in the correct orientation.

This file (or a similar one) was part of the driver he downloaded from ASUS. Said it fixed the issue for him.

    Goodluck.

Hasib...thanks again for the help but I am at the limit of my capabilities. I checked my webcam hardware ID and it shows up in the first three driver downloads listed on the Sonix website that you posted. That should mean that any of those three drivers could be used. There maybe more drivers on that list that could be used but I didn't check them since the first three already had my hardware ID listed. I found the snp2uvc.inf file (I think, but not sure) and tried changing it but obviously no good since I am venturing into areas I am not up to speed on.

There has to be 2 versions of this driver that work but with the difference of the picture being flipped. On separate occasions yesterday and today I was able to have the webcam picture show properly BUT when I either rebooted or shutdown/start the computer again the webcam picture then reverts to being flipped.

At this point I unfortunately have run out of ability to correct the flipped picture. Any suggestions/directions are of course welcomed.

Find the folder where you extracted the drivers and look for this file:

    snp2uvc.inf

Right Click on the file then choose Open

Use the search function and look for the word flip. There should be two fields that looks like this:

    HKR,DefaultSettings,Flip,0x00010001,1 < Change the 1 to 0

    HKR,Settings,Flip,0x00010001,1 < Change the 1 to 0

After the change the lines should look like this:

    HKR,DefaultSettings,Flip,0x00010001,0

    HKR,Settings,Flip,0x00010001,0

Save the file then go into control panel > Add Remove Programs > Uninstall USB 2.0 2.0M UVC Webcam

After the uninstall process windows will then automatically search for the latest drivers for your webcam. Let it install finish then re-install the downloaded driver with the modified snp2uvc.inf driver. Double click on PNPINST64 and then reboot when prompted.

After the reboot your image should be correct and not flipped. Double check the driver version under device manager and the version should be 61.5.200.260 corresponding to the version stated in the first page.

Windows online search will install the driver version 61.5.200.270 which is presumably newer than the one mentioned in this thread.

Using the clues from the .INF file above, I found the corresponding registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0000\DefaultSettings

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0000\Settings

If the driver is already installed and the image is upside down:

    1) Using regedit, go to the second key (the "Settings" one).
    2) Find the "Flip" value, right-click on it, and choose "Modify".
    3) If the current value is 0, change it to 1. If the current value is 1 change it to 0. Click Ok.

    Start up camera capture software.

That flips the camera image vertically for me.

Note: There's also a "Mirror" value that can be changed (as above) to flip the image horizontally. That setting is available in LifeFrame and other software as well.

Above based on stock driver (for the Chicony 2.0M camera) from Asus:

    Version V061.005.200.270
    Chicony_CNF_7246_CR Camera Driver for VISTA 64 WIN7 64 bit

Looks like the class GUID for the Chicony 1.3M camera is the same so the above registry keys should work for that camera as well

    Hi,

I have this issue now, freshly installed Ultimate x64, and the camera driver wont install. Have tried all the tips here - still receive the same error, either failed from Asus disk or "Error: USB 2.0 UVC VGA/1,3M/2.0M Web Cam" when trying downloaded driver.

    Any further suggestions on this?

Doing my first fresh install of Windows 7 64bit on my G73Jh, and was having the similar issue where I was getting the error message "Error: USB 2.0 UVC VGA/1,3M/2.0M Web Cam".

At first, it was a good thing I was getting that error (even though it was VERY uninformative), as I was mistakenly installing the drivers for the 1.3M (megapixel) version of the camera and didn't even know it, which was the driver file name "Camera_Chicony_ 7129_Vista64_Win7_64_615200270.zip" from the official ASUSTek driver download page. I found and used the correct file for the 2.0M webcam I have installed in my G73, which is "Camera_Chicony_ 7246_Vista64_Win7_64_615200270.zip".

Unfortunately, I still got the error message "Error: USB 2.0 UVC VGA/1,3M/2.0M Web Cam", even after rebooting. So, I did what Hasib1522 recommended in his post and went to the DriverCure site and downloaded the "USB 2.0 2.0M UVC WebCam created 2010-12-17 00:56:08" driver, which is version 061.005.200.280 and has the filename "Camera_Chicony_9059_WIN7_64_z615200280.zip".

This newer one DID install properly without an error, and asked me to restart my computer (which I did). Will test once I have LifeFrame (generic webcam viewing software that ASUS offers with the G73) to see if it works. If it's flipped, I'll do what was recommended above by MarkS<marks>.

Thanks go out to everyone that's helped, especially Hasib1522 and MarkS<marks>! +rep to the both of you! :D</marks></marks>

I tok my cousins Asus laptop with this problem apart, turned the camera phsycally upside down and now it is working. Asus, in this case has placed the camera upside down, or the USB cable, or whatever you want to name it.

    different driver(uncorrect driver)...
it was strange that i couldn't install that driver from the disk
so i've tried a lot of combinations from every asus laptop using chicony 2.0M
and found this one working for me
Asus A42JB Notebook Chicony Camera Driver 61.5.200.310

    in the disk is 61.5.200.270

Also, the camera image can be easily inverted to correct position using a registry change instead of physically flipping it

I was struggling with this problem quite a bit after performing a clean install. I exhibited the same error when trying to install the Chicony software. I thought I would share this to save some headaches.

Here is how I got around it:
    1. Uninstall the USB 2.0 UVC webcam from windows add/remove programs.
    2. Go into device manager and manually remove the same USB 2.0 UVC driver under imaging devices if it is there.
    3. Right-click any other device and scan for new hardware changes. Windows will try to install the same USB 2.0 UVS webcam. Just right click it and choose install driver.
    4. Direct this to the folder in which you originally downloaded the Chicony software. Make sure it corresponds with the correct id by following these Asus instructions:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- FAQ FAQ How to find the right camera driver on the download site?

    5. After it installs the driver you will get an error. Just ignore this. Fire up any type of webcam application and it should work fine. It's a bit choppy, although I'm unsure if this is how it always performs.

    Hope this helps!

p.s I thought I might add that I tried all the above solutions and they did not work for me. It would simply not install no matter what so I couldn't even get to the stage of the inverted videos and editing the registry.

So anyone having this trouble I finally figured it out, uninstall the current driver you have for the device in device manager. Next right click and update driver software, browse computer for driver software, let me pick from a list, sometimes you get a huge list sometimes you just get a window with the option of USB Video device. Install that then you are good to go!

that is the windows generic driver you have installed
for better picture and performance you may want to update the driver (but it is not easy , i have experienced the same thing after restart and get that error and only one driver worked ;)
and i have wrote about it on the previous posts
