I've been wanting to get this machine for a while now... and this price is a steal for it. However, is it worth the risk to purchase it Open Box? It would be covered under NewEgg's 60day refund only warranty.

    Any opinions?

I think it's worth the risk given the price. If it works fine within the 60 days, it will probably be fine after wards. Just use the heck out of it within that 60 days. If there are issues, it will make itself known pretty quick.

Totally worth it, on 2nd thought it only adds 2gb ram, 1080p, and Bluetooth. If that is worth $200 to you, then yes. If not, get the RBBX05 refurb for $200 less. You may still get the full asus warranty on the x1 though, if newegg didn't report it to Asus. It would go by the Mfr date probably.

Went open box for my G73JH-X1. It was basically like-new except someone had removed the stickers.

It took a few months for the problem to crop up, that is, a faulty hard drive. Didn't lose anything important, and it was a cheap fix, so overall I got a good value out of it. And not a single GSOD yet, either.

If you do decide to get one, definitely spend a few days to give it a proper burn-in cycle. Remember: it was returned for a reason.

Out of curiousity, do companies like Square Trade or the Newegg warranty addon company come out superior compared to the Asus repair center?

Since Asus takes 3-4 weeks to repair, has anyone dealt with the other two companies and have stories to share?

The warranty addons from both companies are very cheap and offers paid shipping too.
