I've been searching for the cause for months, still cant pin it down. I've disabled indexing, and its not my anti virus, because ive check system monitor and its usually always system.exe. Tried proc mon as well, except its usually always inconclusive.

    Help!

    What are your power settings?

Do you have your hard drive scheduled to turn off after a certain period? If you do, does this change whether your hard drive shows activity or not?

I did see one thread that suggested a SMART analysis on your hard drive...perhaps something like this: CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Bizarre issue. I wonder if mine does it (I've never really looked...so it might).
