Bad FPS on the webcam seems to be normal... apparently no fixes for it yet. It has been posted about in the main G73JW thread in the owners lounge.

Yep, unfortunately the fps on my personal G73jw isn't the best either and this is a common complaint. Every time I get that type of feedback I forward it on to Asus so maybe they will fix it. I have spent many hours fiddling with my webcam and have had no luck. Unfortunately I dont have better news for you. Sorry.

any solution yet? I just got my 3de and the webcam is unusable, 4-5 fps... Tried different drivers / caption software, finally a clean os installation but nothing changed.

What's the vendor and product IDs for the cameras that are slow?

I get a solid 30FPS up to 800x600 and 15FPS up to 1600x1200 (which is the max resolution for the 2.0M camera on mine). And there's <1sec latency.

Mine is the USB 2.0 UVC 2m WebCam - Azurewave VID 13D3 / PID 5122.

I have tested Azurewave Camera Driver (Sonix by the way) V5.8.54000.206 & 207, V5.8.55133.207 & 208 as well as Microsoft 6.1.7600.16543. Some more that I deleted afterwards, tried them all both before and after clean OS installation.

Come up with something guys, I googled so much that I ended up reading about writing UVC inf files and usb isoc packets of 1024bytes long! :D

@antisniperspy VirtualDub for example and probably many others will show you the fps... I just tried it to check my cam just in case.

Another cam thread that just came back from the dead reminded me....

If you have poor frame rates try uninstalling the Asus Virtual Camera Utility (unless you really need it). I removed it right when I got my G73 (since I write software that uses cameras I work with my own filters and test with cams stripped down) so I never thought about it, but the more filters you remove from the chain, the better cams work.

Also, here's a link to a build of a Windows SDK sample application that will let you play around with resolution, frame rates, and available camera settings (which vary by model). It's a Microsoft demo app, its UI is not pretty, but it doesn't insert any unnecessary filters (e.g. like LifeFrame does) so you get a decent idea of how your camera's performing. Regardless of actual framerate, the local video preview should be smooth and with very little latency.

Even the lowest price USB webcams these days pretty much all can do 30FPS @ at least 640x480. Of course, using that resolution and frame rate for live conferencing isn't always a good idea since, depending on the codec(s) used, compression is CPU intensive and not all endpoint-to-endpoint network connections can handle the bit rate...adjust accordingly (don't forget to factor in the audio stream (where applicable) too!).

<Marks> the only thing i keep virtual camera is becouse skype gives me dark picture without it
but when i use skype with virtual camera it shows bright picture (althought the camera is turning off and on for a second ... don't know why that's happening only in skype)
yeah i have old cameras from my pc but they have options to control... on G73JH there is no option to control the light , exposure
it is working automatically and probably that's decreasing my frames at night
at bright day it is fine like you've mentioned but still around 20 frames with 1sec latency
i tried editing some options in registry but they don't work ... i've read not all the cameras support all the options
