Hey there. I seem to always have a problem with my G73:/
I ran into another today. I wanted to record a few things with this new microphone I bought ( CAD U7 USB Desktop Boundary Microphone and more USB Microphones at GuitarCenter.com.) But when I plug it in, it says Installing Device Driver and says it failed. Then it will be displayed under Devices and Printers as C Audio Audio Input Device - Needs troubleshooting.
When I troubleshoot it looks for drivers and says none can be found. Its supposed to be plug and play, which I guess means the drivers are on board the hardware. I thought maybe I got a fluke so I plugged in my friends USB mic...to which it did the same thing. Other USB things seem to work...I don't know why Mics wouldn't.
I did a manual search on google for a driver that might work to allow the new mic to work...but none are available as none are needed.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you've got some corrupted drivers.
-
What do you mean? Which drivers seem to be corrupt and how do I go about fixing them? Thanks!
-
Have U tried opening control panel- sound- recording- and disabling the built in device, reboot, plug in the USB mic?
Once U get win 7 to recognize the device, this thread may be of help if you have further issues.

Hope this helps, J -
Tried it. Nothing.
And that thread wasnt of help, thanks though. Mine is an external mic. -
If your mic doesn't install correctly in any of your USB ports, it's likely a corrupted windows driver. Which was probably caused by plugging in the mic, letting windows start the detection process and removing the mic before the driver was properly installed. So now windows "thinks" it's installed, but it isn't. Chalk another one up to user error.
-
Please help with this though. Will a windows repair work? -
It doesn't work on any computer right, could be a faulty mic. See if you can get the retailer to replace it.
-
It works on my desktop just fine.

If you can figure out the driver it's using, maybe you can select it manually from device manager and force it to use the correct one.
-
You remind me of another user that claimed his g73 fried his external monitor. It fried a second monitor too. Then, after months of complaining that asus had ruined two monitors, he found out his vga cable wasn't properly isolated. Everyone said "user error, not asus" but he refused to believe it.
Anyways. It doesn't necessarily mean that you've borked the mic install, it could be a hard drive fault that corrupted the driver. If you've force-installed the proper mic driver through the device manager, then you may be able to remove this "assumption" off the list of possible causes. -
I tried a system restore and to re-install. Didnt help. I cant find any good information via google so can you tell me what you searched?
I heard that a windows repair might fix it by repairing any corrupted files. Does this sound right? And to do a windows repair it seems I need a windows install with a serial number, neither of which came with my computer. :/ Help! -
-
actually yes I tried that. no luck. :/
and its every USB mic that I plug in. not just one. -
Have you disabled the built in microphone? -

Have you tried updating your intel chipset drivers with the -overall switch?
Also, did you try finding the driver used on your desktop, and forcing device manager to use that one on your g73? -
And I will try that, but its a plug and play type driver it seems. I didn't know I could actually locate it on the desktop. I guess I will have to give that a try.
But after some more research it seems that some files may be corrupted but my G73 didnt come with a windows install disk/ serial key. only the Asus Windows 7 Recovery Media for Windows 7 Products. I opened it up but have no idea how to run a repair install. -

Just open the command prompt and cd to the directory where you downloaded the intel inf update utility .exe (you can get it from intel download center) and then add -overall to the end of the command.
It should be a plug-and-play type of thing, but either your USB drivers are the culprit, or some windows file got corrupted.
You can try a sfc /scannow to verify your windows files, if it finds errors you will need a windows 7 CD. See: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html -

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
I guess my next step is to google "intel download center" and download the intel inf update utility. Sound right? -

Yes, your intel chipset drivers contain the usb host controller drivers. So that is a good thing to try.
You can also try locating the usb mic in device manager on your desktop, then hit properties and note the driver it's using. Then go to your G73 and try to update the driver manually in device manager using the same driver. -
I am having trouble installing the new chipset. :/
I downloaded the INF Update Utility ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?lang=eng&DwnldID=19597)
After I ran the setup, nothing happened. Restarted computer, still nothing.
I have downloaded what I think is the correct chipset as well :
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...x64.zip&lang=eng&Dwnldid=19601&ProductID=3172
Googled: how to install intel chipset with no luck.
Sorry for the bother but I feel I am about to solve my problem.
Help? -
If you go to chastity's driver page G73 Series Driver and Application Reference
scroll down and see these lines:
Core Drivers:
Intel Chipset INF for Series 5 v9.2.0.1025 (this version was compiled as a self-installer that does a full install. Just use default settings and let her run.)
I recently updated mine with this , as always she did a great job making this easy for us. -
Alright, I installed both the Intel Chipset INF and Intel RST SATA Drivers and rebooted, tried to use the USB mic again...and again it failed to find any drivers. :/
Any other ideas? I will try to do what you said about the desktop thing, but the only problem with that is that the drivers are not available online, so I don't know how I'd get them to the g73. -

The idea with the desktop is to figure out what driver it's using and then on your laptop, go to device manager and find that same driver manually. This does not involve any transfer of files, it's just skipping the automatic driver detection part.
