So I have owned my G73JH for more than 2 years, and recently the headphone jack is broken. E verytime I use my earphone, the right earphone won't sound at all. I have tried another earphone but the problem still persists. I also restored the windows to make sure that it has nothing to do with the software, but the problem still persists again.

Unfortunately my laptop warranty expires last May. I submitted a RMA and asked them how much the repair will cost and they did not give the price quote. I wonder how much it will cost.

I saw on some asus forum that somebody experienced the same problem on his G53, and apparently the problem was from the loose cable connecting the headphone jack to motherboard.

IF my headphone jack is broken, is it possible to replace the headphone jack itself? I am afraid that the headphone jack is attached to the motherboard permanently and can not be removed.

    Please help me

    THANKS!

It is possible that something small is jammed inside the headphone jack and is preventing the headphones from being inserted fully.

If the jack is actually broken I see a few options. The first is to just use a usb headset or an external soundcard. The second is an rma. The 3rd is a self repair. I am 99% sure that the G73 has a separate pcb for the headphone/microphone jacks. If this is the case a repair could be incredibly simple as it would only require disassembly and swapping the pcb. I'm not sure where to source this pcb from though. I cant search now either.

EDIT: look at the video arround the 7 min mark. you can see a pcb on the bottom left (where the headphone jack is as well as a usb port and the mic jack). BTOtech.com | G73Jh & G73Jw & G73Sw Disassembly Take Apart G73 g73jw service manual - YouTube

Goodluck with your repairs! I hope I helped in some way.

Thanks for the reply. I think I ll just buy an USB sound card and will have it fixed later. Any recommendation for the USB sound card brand that is better than G73's internal sound card?

Usually if the pin number on the connectors are the same and the layout is the same then it will work regardless of the revision. Might be a safer bet to match the part numbers, though i never had a revision or older part that didn't work correctly. The revisions are usually just another batch to make that particular pcb design. If it looks the same as your defective part then it should work.

afaik, every different G73JH SKU shared the same mobo, the same connectors, etc. The differences were in lcd panel, RAM, HDDs, ODD and bundled accessories.

Just do the installation yourself, it really can't be too hard. There's videos to show you how to disassemble the laptop and you can be extra careful unlike the shop you take it to. I own a small shop and you would be amazed at the damage i see from other computer techs getting in a hurry or using a long screw where a short one is supposed to go. So if i were you i would just watch the video a couple times until you're confident enough to install the usb/audio board.

    Here's the video

It looks like the usb/audio board is in the bottom left corner so all you have to do is split the laptop apart to replace that board. You don't have to remove the motherboard, though i would suggest cleaning the fans and heatsinks before you reassemble the laptop.
