Hi, i got Asus g73jh-a1 for couple of month and i was playing BF3. From the last patch in April my fps in-game dropped. In empty server I can get 1xx-12x fps when i stand, but when i move it drops to 5x, this fps drops is random, every 15-20s. And in new map from CQC pack like Opertion 925 or Scrapmetal, my fps is unstable, when i play in 16 player map, normal i got 6x-8x fps, but like above it dropped to 5x-4x, even 3x and very laggy, especially when the scene has explosion or someone jump in front of me. I tried so many things to fix it, MSI AB to overclock my VGA to 750/1050, gamebooster, set all low in res 1280x768,updated all newest driver... but nothing change. i installed new driver for my VGA, 12.4 and 12.6 beta but it seems becoming worse. Now i am using 11.10 preview 3 and it's better than 12.4 but lag and shuttle still there. Please help me.
my specs: i7 720, 8gb ram, ATI 5870m

You should be able to get 40-60fps with med-high settings 1080p with that card as long as AA is off.
How are your temps while playing? Sounds like you could be throttling if the lag is really bad and fps jumps a lot. BF3 is probably the most intensive game you can play and the JH is one of the most common overheaters.
Run HWINFO sensors in the background and play until it lags and post your results. If your temps are over 100oC most likely your problem. -
Here the result after i played 2 CQ map. Now it appears 1 more things, my fps dropped to 2x after 10-15s.
Sorry uploaded wrong file. Here are the result from HWinfoAttached Files:

Sorry I don't have a program to open that file can you post a screenshot?
-
Here the screenshot when i played, as you can see i got 26 fps and it happened every 10s. Even i put everything in low and res 1280x768

Could you post a screenshot of your in game settings as well?
Temps are very good no worries there. -
Here is SS for my setting

Something is not right there you should be able to easily punch out medium - high at 1080p as long as AA is kept off. Mesh can hurt so drop that down from Ultra because that causes me to loose frames on my card.
Can you go into your CCC settings make sure that you have everything set to balanced and application controlled and not forced on, specifically Anti Aliasing. -
BF3 runs plenty fine. I know another G73JH user who has put in countless hours into BF3.
Also turning off the post processing in that game = better visuals IMO. I really hate how blurry and glaring the post processing in that game makes everything.
I used to get 45 FPS avg using medium/high settings and 8xAF -
45FPS....How come, my laptop when fps drop below 50 it's freaking lag. it's playable when my fps is 55 more at least. just finish 1 game with fps drop every 10s
-
I can play BF3 with mid-high settings on 1920x1080 with my G73JH (i7 720, 8GB RAM, 5870) ... FPS is around 50-60FPS, more around 60FPS when I overclock the GPU core by 100 MHz.
-
Go back in and set the game to high 1080p or 900p (full screen!) depending what screen you are using and run the campaign for 10-15 minutes with HWINFO sensors running in the background and post your results.
It sounds like overheating to me. -
i use. have this laptop but i upgraded to a clevo with 7970m
-
i always get very high temps when i overclocked woth the 5870m
-
Seems when i play BF3 with HWinfo, that made my fps drop from 60 to 24. Normally when i play BF3. my fps randomly drop from 7-8x to 4x

HWINFO sensors wont effect your frames at all it has nothing to do with the GPU.
Did you do as I said and run BF3 with all high settings at maximum res full screen for a good 10 minutes in game?
Also your CPU is only drawing 36watts while your cores are at max and on my 720QM it would be flat out drawing 45-48watts with BF3 do you have your power settings set to high performance and your CPU management set to 100%? -
I can't play 10 minutes with high settings, my fps is unstable, moving between 35-70
Here are the proof, like i said before when i played BF3 with HWinfo, my fps dropped.Attached Files:

Ok, that is more like it your CPU is drawing 50 watts.
However your GPU is running at 500/1000? It is only hitting 69oC so that is your problem.
Are you running on battery??? If not your GPU is not using high performance or not clocking into 3D Mode.
Go into power settings. Advanced Settings. ATI Graphics Settings at the bottom. Make sure it is set to high performance & on AC power.
I recommend you completely reinstall your drivers as well.
(HWINFO will not be what is affecting your FPS) -
1st picture i think i unplugged it in accident, but the 2nd one was on charge.
-
Run Battlefield 3 on AC power at high settings full screen 900p in game for 10 minutes solid with HWINFO sensors in the background.
Then post the screenshot. Make sure you have your power settings to high performance! -
what driver are you using?
-
-
I have just been suffering the same issues recently. It's as if all of a sudden my GPU is running slow (like when your AC is out). I have checked the AC Power for Max performance in the Catalyst 'Powerplay' section.
Strangely, no number of resolution drops will fix my FPS. Especially on BF3, I used to play a very steady FPS (40~50), now all of a sudden its dropped down to 18~25.
I know I am due my 3rd re paste as my GPU TEMP2 is showing the early 90's if I run 700/100.
That said I have never seen a sudden drop in FPS/Performance with higher temps in the past.
I have VBIOS93 and have ATI 11.10 drivers (Although this happened before changing drivers, I was running an older version that were fine).
Any help would be usefull, I am going to re-paste, but I am perplexed as to why my FPS still run badly even on really low resolution.
Witcher 2 does the same FPS issue, even on low res settings. I usually manage to fix all issues I've had with this beast in the past couple of years but this is very weird! -
What are you MEM(IO) temps?
If you are seeing 90oC + on the Diode your Memory controllers can be 10-15oC above that so you could be throttling, it feels as though you are running along perfectly fine and then someone grabs hold of the back of your shirt and then it evens out and your back to normal.
Have heard a lot of people say this recently though seems the latest patch has caused some bouncing of frames in certain areas but would run BF3 with HWINFO sensors in the background for 10-15 minutes and check the temps across the board the 5870M has 4 sections and normally the MeM and shaders run the hottest.
If you are not seein good results from repasting it could be the gap that causes poor cooling between the DIE and heatsink, use IC Diamond as its thickness always use to reap better results by filling the gap caused by the poorly made heatsink so the thicker the TIM the better. Make sure she is dust free as well but I am sure you are aware of that. -
Today I just installed fresh win7+all updated, VGA driver 11.10 preview 3 and downloaded 16GB of crap BF3. Now I totally can't play BF3 because my fps drops from 8x to 10 EVERY 5 seconds. Same problem with Diablo 3. What I have to do now
-
-
I put it to high performance and i noticed that cpu usage is about 20-30% when i played Diablo 3...when i went to window and open Chrome, it's so slow and laggy. Did not try on Battlefield 3 but i think have same result....
-
Thanks for the suggestions Yiddo, I ran HWINFO the MEM(IO) ran out at 91c max.
I will definitely be pasting soon, as it always helps to get in there and clean up the monster (probably try Arctic MX2 this time).
Oh yeah..... the Windows 7 event viewer came up saying that Visual performance was not running well `~ "Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result"~.
Will be checking my memory and looking at my disks also.
It would seem I have more work to do (again) with the G73 *sigh* -
Do a complete video driver rinse as well to rule that out.
91oC is not anywhere near the danger point so it does not sound like throttling above 100oC is when you need to worry but do consider ICD it is the best imo. Since the patch it looks like they have broken something so maybe a driver or update will be released to fix the problem.
-
Here are the screen shots when I played Diablo 3 and BF3. Horrible fps...

Have you made sure that AA is turned off?
Windows fully updated? Latest DirectX? -
Paging is something I have never changed, its sitting at 8116MB. Yeah I'd like to grab some ICD however its not available for sale in NZ!...will try and ship some in if I can find a supplier online.
Also noticed my CPU Temps run out at 99c, not sure if that has any bearing tho'.
Going back to 12.4 drivers and will sweep. -
100oC is TJ Max for a CPU keep that away from 99oC until you repaste normally if a CPU is running that hot it means a fan problem unless you have a XM processor or a horrendous repaste. You need to get inside and service that thing ASAP complete clean including inside the fans if needby and a proper application of compound. Good idea to get yourself some new thermal pads to. I cover everything in my post here just ignore the heatsink modding.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...3570-g73-jh-jw-disassembly-repaste-guide.html -
Ha well.....there you go, I repasted twice in the past 2 years but never bothered with the CPU!
Will be doing that ASAP.
In terms of the paging size what do you suggest? Virtual memory settings are always something I have never been sure about I have to admit. -
Sort the overheating out first that is probably going to be causing the majority of the problems with stability your CPU has a fever mate
-
Yeah.....I'm overdue a clean out and maintenance anyway....thx for the advice mate!
-
Okay so re pasted both CPU and GPU.
CPU fan had a nice layer of thick carpet like dust blocking outlet, so that would not have been really that great. All cleaned out now with Pro-Limatech PK1 Compound on both (Benchmark sites show it outperforming Arctic MX pastes so I'll save my dolla's for ICD).
CPU Paste was bone dry (as it would be after those scorching temps!).
GPU Still had my last PK1 paste on it which was still quite moist/soft.
Ran out of time to grab Thermal pads, so will get those on the next re paste.
Ordering ICD for next clean out.
CPU Running at 55c after 5 mins of Furmark Stability.
Furmark showed GPU Maxed out at 79c. (Although HWINFO showed Memory IO at 85c).
Ran BF3 at 1920 x 1080 with Most settings High on Back to Karkand with full server and ran at 43FPS, with MemIO at 78C and CPU Temps at 58c across the board
I also cleaned out my hard drives as they were filling up badly, I ended up freeing up a 300G overall onto an external drive.
Motto of my story: Don't try and cook your CPU....its not clever and it doesn't taste good either. -
Much better temps no need to repaste again with them 80's are fine for the 5870M so you did a good application. The stock compound barely lasts a year IMO it drys up and loses its efficiency and with all that dust you had a nice little oven there
Good to hear you got it sorted should perform much better now with no throttling.
I tried PK1 several application heard good things about it from desktop users but for laptops it cannot cut it from my tests, I switched back to ICD and saw much better results, a good compound for properly made heatsinks no doubt but rarely do laptops have amazing heatsinks. -
Thanks for the assistance Yiddo .........good man -

They basically won titles with a team that was paid for illegally, cheating teams in the division and Europe, they owe the taxpayer and Scottish Football millions. Even Jelavic who went to Everton still hasn't been paid for! and he's one of many.... .
That said, it's already a dire league to watch, take away the Old Firm and you might as well go watch netball.
I say put them into Div 2, the rules apply to everyone and they are not exempt. -
True, True that is the answer most of the scotsman I speak to give.
I can just see it being the end for Scottish EPL if they do as Sky will drop out and then there will be no money and as sad and corrupt as our world is these days money is everything sometimes you need to have a scummy cheating team to keep things interesting and have something worth beating.
.....on topic again good to see you achieved better tempshehe.
-
I do think this will be a good 'shake up' in the long term. We suffer with a poor league and a really poor national side. Something had to give.
Sky have confirmed they wont be dropping the deal, but yes I agree...we will need them about eventually so we can wallop them again....nothing like seeing a hurting Rangers fan....especially right now....humble pie all round.
Anyway....moving swiftly on from the joke that is Scottish football.
I have a question Yiddo...on MSI Afterburner my GPU show max clocks of 700 and 1000, if I use the AMD tool to go higher will that exceed my limit and cause issues. I guess what I'm asking is, am I limited to those clocks with this GPU (how can I tell if my GPU is one of the 'limited' types).
Also has anyone ever managed to fix the crappy touchpad on these things? Mine has always been shocking, I know there was alot posted on this (Chastity, etc..) but I never got past pasting and mainly use a mouse, just wondered if you know the best link/thread for any fixes? -
I found that by just removing the silver/metal strip that covers the bottom of the Touchpad and cleaning off all the gunk and sticky crap on it that it fixed the issue most likely caused by electromagnetism by that bloody strip. Very simple fix and worth doing.
For overclocking just use Overdrive or the MSI Afterburner both work fine I never liked ATI Tools it caused issues with my voltages and card downclocking. As your temps are better now punch it upto 750/1050 and see if it is stable then work your up from there 10mhz at a time on each.
Check my extended sig for instructions. -
Sweet, nice one mate.....will try that fix, thanks once again
