Hello all, I bought an Asus G73SW some time ago. I recently bought some AAA games off steam, and have had some trouble with the framerates. The games I'm having trouble with are:
Crysis 2
LA Noire
Saints Row: The Third
When I first start the game, things seem fine for about 5 minutes. Then it seems like the framerate slows down considerably that the game graphics gets really choppy to the point where I get dizzy.
Now get this:
If I alt-tab out for a few seconds and then go back into the game, the game's framerate shoots up and everything is very smooth. Then after about a minute the game graphics goes choppy.
I thought it may be because of the throttling issue that are present on the G73 series, as was stated in this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...3sw-owners-cpu-throttling-798mhz-how-fix.html
I've tried out ThrottleStop with BD-PROCHOT unchecked. The problem is still present.
I don't want to use the unofficial bios in that thread and I don't want to overclock my system either..
I've considered that perhaps the games I'm running have high demands, but I've also tested the game on low settings, and I still get the same problem. It also doesn't make sense that the game runs fine at some point before being seemingly throttled (and I tested this on Medium settings too). I should note that I can run other AAA games fine, such as Batman: Arkham Asylum.
I have even gone to the game exe process and given it HIGH priority in the task manager. This doesn't solve anything.
I have my GTX460M updated to the latest stable nvidia driver (the newest unstable doesn't seem to apply to these games anyway), so I don't think it's a driver issue. I don't have an antivirus except for the default MS one on Windows 7. These are single player games, so definitely nothing to do with networking. My bios is the latest version from the Asus website.
My system is an i7 Core @ 2.00 GHz, with 8 gigs of ram, and it is a clean install of Windows 7.
Could someone help me out?

What are the settings on those games?
My 460m will usually do 1920x1080 but requires that antialiasing be off or minimal with a lot of other settings on medium or low if the game is relatively new.
What are your temperatures doing?
I have this issue with Borderlands 2 however. I set frames to cap at 50 and there usually is no problem hitting that cap except randomly GPU usage will drop and fps down to the teens 15-25 for a few seconds. It's very frustrating.
This is even with ThrottleStop running at locked Turbo and my 460m @ 825/1500. -
I ran Saints Row The Third and the temperatures hold fine at a steady 72 degree F.
I turned antialiasing off, and it boosted the framerate from ~15fps to ~20fps.
HDR effects are set to None, everything else is set to Low. I'm running on widescreen and resolution 1920x1080. Vsync is set to OFF.
The game is still a bit choppy to be enjoyable though, even after the 5 fps gain. -
How do you guys have ThrottleStop set up?
Run a ThrottleStop log file and have a look to see if your CPU is throttling during the game.
Copy and paste the data to Pastebin.com and post a link here so I can have a look and send me an email or a PM to remind me. Post at least 15 minutes of log data while gaming and make sure it includes when you are having FPS problems.
No need to flash the bios, you just need to make sure your CPU is running as Intel intended. BD PROCHOT is only one way to throttle a CPU. -
Actually, I forced turbo mode then turned off forced turbo and that seemed to help.
Could voltages cause throttling? My 460m is overvolted to ~.97V and when I force Turbo CPU consumption jumps to 1.5+V. Could this extra power consumption cause throttling? -
Saints Row The Third:
DATE TIME MULTI C0% CKMOD CHIPM BAT_mW TEMP VID POWER - Pastebin.com
Crysis 2:
DATE TIME MULTI C0% CKMOD CHIPM BAT_mW TEMP VID POWER - Pastebin.com
Generally it shows booting the game, then playing, then quitting.
Crap, I forgot to write down the times since I got too enthralled in the game, haha. I'll try it again, but do the logs above show anything significant?
