I own an Asus G73jh. I get frequent black screens when I power on my machine. I have to then reboot the machine via holding down the power button. This problem has been happening probably about 2 weeks after I purchased the notebook(4/12/2010), just less frequent when it was new. It probably occurs 50% of the time now. I also get frequent blue (sometimes grey) screens while using the machine, or if I leave it idle for for a while, when I come back to refresh the machine it will blue screen on me, or just remain black. This problem is very frustrating as this notebook is only around 6 months+ old, with mild use, and with a $1200.00+ price tag, you would expect this machine to work perfectly right out of the box. I have spoken with Asus Technical support, and have been given instructions to run the system recovery, assuming using the 3 DVDs that the machine instructed me to burn when I first got the it, and was told once I have finished the process to turn off auto windows updates.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Your machine has a black screen when you turn it on, immediately? You don't see the ASUS logo at the POST screen?
This points to a problem with the LVDS cable being loose or damaged. It could be a problem on either side of the connection, or the cable itself.
Have you tried it on an external monitor to see if the behavior is the same? -

Yeah, if this happens after windows has loaded, and not immediately when you turn it on, it is more likely a VBIOS issue. There is a ton of info in the relevant section here:

Correct, 50% of the time I power on my machine , the screen stays black and never even shows the Asus logo, so I have to hold down the power button to restart and then usually it will work. I also do get the GSODs and BSODs while using my machine, just not as often as the black screen when I turn on my machine. I will probably follow up on the GSOD tutorial tomorrow when I wake up just to take care of that. (By the way thank you for the video you made with it, very helpful) But I still don't know what to do about these blank black screens on boot-up....maybe system recovery? format? any advice is greatly appreciated....thanks..

It's under a year old and you shouldn't have tolerated this for so long. It should be repaired under warranty.

Yes, This is a Bestbuy version, trust me I have contacted them many times, they said even though its under an "Asus" 1 year warranty, that their policy is 14 days for computers..And that i could take it in, but they would charge me. Now OfficeMax on the other hand told me they are one of Asus' service centers since they are partners, I can take it there free of charge , but right now there are like 10 computers ahead of me, as i just recently found out this info....

If this happens the instant you turn on the computer, there is nothing a format and reinstall or recovery is going to do to fix it. You can try resetting your BIOS to defaults, but it's a shot in the dark. You should see if you can reproduce this behavior on the VGA port when it starts up with an external monitor. If you can it would point to a problem with the graphics card. If not, it's most likely an issue with the LVDS (display) cable or the LCD panel itself.
If it's still under warranty, I wouldn't mess with it much, but you can try to pinpoint it so that you can better describe the issue and have a better chance of getting it fixed with an RMA. -

Recently bought a G73JH-BST7 and am having similar issues. Black screen upon start-up before the ASUS splash screen appears that I can eventually get past by rebooting (by cycling the power switch). Then it will give me intermittent GSODs - these can sometimes be overcome by flexing the case! Have also gotten a couple of messages about the display driver stopping and being recovered. (Catalyst 11.1 installed)
Eventually it seems to settle out and everything works fine. -
I bet you are not on the current beta vBIOS

Flexing the case to fix it sounds like a display connection problem.

Installed Chastity's OD vBios and Catalyst 11.2 drivers and so far seems to be fixed. Thanks all.
