Hey guys i just came from official ASUS ROG forum as no one was helping me there so i decided to join this forum as it looked helpful to me ...so here i go:
I installed new motherboard as my old motherboard died due to short circuit in it ... i installed each and every component properly and now when i turn on the laptop the GPU fan does not spin only the CPU fan spins and i get only black screen ... i can hear the windows login sound properly and can login blindly .... i just wanted to know if my gpu dead or needs to flash vbios blindly ? any help would be highly appreciated [IMG] thanks !

EDIT: Problem solved ! GPU fan will not work if the GPU is dead ! thats all

    Things to try:
    • reset bios to defaults (pull cmos battery and hold 'on' button for ~20 seconds)
    • external monitor; if this display works then it's the lcd (or its cable)
    • try reseating gpu firmly; its contacts can be finicky
    • last resort; bake gpu (reflows soldering contacts)

Can you swap the GPU and CPU fans to see if it will spin when plugged into the other port. That will help find out if its the fan or something else.

Also can you plug into an external monitor to see if you get a picture on that.

And lastly did you get the exact same revision MoBo.

well tried all the steps as u mentioned but not the last one because i dont know how to do it properly ! well reset bios didnt helped and plugging with external monitor didnt worked too and reseating the gpu firmly and applying paste on it again didnt helped too :( one thing ...when i totally remove the GPU from the board both the fans spin at full speed and i can still hear the windows booting sound ... i guess its the gpu now ... dont know whats wrong with it but when i touch the thermal area of heat sink of the GPU they are also heated well

hey thanks for the reply ! well yes the board i ordered is of the same revision number but the build quality is a bit different but not that much and i dont know which bios it is having inside it and i think it doesnt even matters ! and i can confirm both the fans are working as yesterday i removed the gpu totally from the board and started the laptop with connecting both the fans with it ... the fans starting spinning at full RPM and i can hear the windows booting sound ... so i guess its the gpu which is dead ! can i check it with a multimeter if there is any resistance which got shorted or something like that ?

Did use the key-combo with the external monitor, right? Just to check, mind.

That both spin up when no gpu is present is normal; it's a safety feature. Since the fan's silent when gpu's plugged that means it's not entirely dead; otherwise it'd go full speed. Since the heatpipes heat up, at least the thermal interface is fine as well ... shame, because that leaves a crippled gpu.

Kinda brings back the original reason for the new motherboard; might have taken the gpu along with it. Could use a multimeter, sure, but we already know that it's drawing power; otherwise its heatpipes would've stayed cold. Also; rather difficult to access the pcb when it's plugged in socket, not to mention it'll run only for a few seconds without a heatsink attached. Easiest check would be another gpu ...

Bit of a last straw; blind-flash bios to latest version? Might as well do the gpu's vbios then, too. Don't give this much chance, though, since the same gpu worked fine before and this model only had one type of gpu (so no bios update necessary).

Did you give the boards a good physical inspection for damage?

well what i am thinking now to do is that flash the custom VBIOS made by charisty i guess ( dont remember his name properly) as i have got no other option left and i also tried the key combo ! tried each possible way but no success so i guess vbios is the last option as the gpu is not working according to me but is giving heat to the thermal heat sink while it is installed in the motherboard ! or shall i give it for reballing ?

yes i did with the motherboard and the GPU board too ! not a single sign of any damage or burned component !

    You could try baking it.

ahan ! how about giving it to the computer shop guy for REBALLING? he will only charge me if the gpu will start working otherwise he would not and i guess this is the better option

well i am afraid of the new MB aswell ! the heatsink pipe on the gpu and the cpu heat up and the cpu fan is spinning but the GPU fan is not spinning up and the GPU heatsink pipes get heated up at too much temperature as i can feel it
