Hi first time poster here great site with awesome info. I need some help with an issue hopefully you guys can give some insight on what's going on.

I purchased an Asus G73SW from best buy a month ago to use for streaming game content on justin.tv. I also purchased a black magic intensity shuttle to capture the game content. The black magic shuttle uses usb 3.0 to capture the video and I purchased this laptop since it claimed it did super speed usb 3.0.

As soon as I connected the device to the laptop and used the packaged capturing software, I automatically got a BSOD screen with an error about the FLCX driver which I ended up finding out is in regards to the fresco logic chip. So I figured I would run sisoft sandra to see if I can figure anything else out about the pc and the program claims that my pci-e slot for the usb 3.0 is maximum 2.5 gigabits. Now for me to use the black magic I need a maximum of 5 gigabits.

What I'm trying to do is figure out if there is in fact a way to enable the full speed or if I'm basically SOL on this issue. To confirm I have spoken to asus tech support and they can't find out why it's not working properly. I'm assuming that they fibbed the actual speeds and didn't really want to fess up to the problem.

That's because the Fresco Logic chip used in ASUS G73SW is likely to be FL1000, which only supports PCI-E x1 with a maximum transmission rate of 2.5Gbits. According to Blackmagic's website, they require at least a PCI-E 2.0 x1, which has double the bandwidth, for the Shuttle to work properly.

On the website, it also states,
It is not really ASUS's problem, but rather the lack of strict protocal for the USB 3.0 specification. The specification calls for an increase of bandwidth up to 5Gbit/s. But of course, products that cannot obtain that kind of speed, yet is faster than USB2.0, will be labled as "USB 3.0 SS".

Similar problems can be found on the Wi-Fi N standard, where manufacturers are known to lable 150mbps wifi module as "WiFi-N", even though the N protocal calls for speed up to 300mbps.
