I know when I picked up the Asus G74SX-BBK7 from Best Buy about a month ago, I was very happy. I paid $1199 plus got a gift card for $100. Then I got wind that the BB version is watered down or gimped with a Nvidia GTX 560M with a bus width of 128 bits among other things. The 560 in, I believe, every other G74SX has a bus width of 192 bits. Now I was starting to doubt my purchase.
What does that really mean? Obviously it means the 560M (128) should be slower than the 560M (192)...I don't know the exact details and to be quite honest, I really don't care why the 560M (128) is slower...just that it is.
So I decided to run some benchmarks to compare them with an already benched Asus G74SX-3DE found here Review Asus G74SX-3DE Gaming Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
Software used:
Fraps to capture the average FPS
MSI Afterburner to overclock and monitor the GPU temperatures
CoreTemp64 to monitor CPU temperatures
Furmark was used to get a stable overclock
I used the stock Nvidia drivers that came with the laptop, 268.37 and an external LCD.
I was able to OC the GPU to 950 Core Clock / 1900 Shader Clock / 1500 Memory Clock with no ill effects. I ran Furmark for two hours and the temps never exceeded 67 C and there were no artifacts.
During all of these tests the GPU never got higher than 66 C and the CPU never got above 77 C
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - settings: High for everything, 4xAA, 8xAF Vsync off, HBAO On. I played the first level.
1920x1080 - GPU Stock - 26.759 FPS
1920x1080 - GPU OC - 32.699 FPS
1600x900 - GPU Stock - 38.146 FPS
1600x900 - GPU OC - 46.481 FPS
Dirt 3 - settings: Every setting High or Ultra where applicable, 4xAA, No Vsync. I used the built in benchmark option.
1920x1080 - GPU Stock - 20.993 FPS
1920x1080 - GPU OC - 25.503 FPS
1600x900 - GPU Stock - 26.936 FPS
1600x900 - GPU OC - 32.712 FPS
Mafia 2 - settings: High settings, No Vsync, No AA, AFx16, Ambient Occulsion On, no Physx. I used the built in benchmark option.
1920x1080 - GPU Stock - 34.145 FPS
1920x1080 - GPU OC - 41.611 FPS
1600x900 - GPU Stock - 47.122 FPS
1600x900 - GPU OC - 57.495 FPS
Here are the scores from the 560M (192) in the Asus G74SX-3DE mentioned in the link above for comparison.
BFBC2 - 1920x1080 - same settings as I used - 35 FPS
Dirt 3 - 1920x1080 - same settings as I used - 22.57 FPS
Mafia 2 - 1920x1080 - same settings as I used - 49 FPS
Well there you have it. The 560M (128) is no match for the 560M (192) at stock speeds, but we all knew that. But in my opinion, give it a nice overclock (which it does really well) and with the lower res screen (1600x900) I have myself a nice mobile gaming platform...and for a lot less $$$ than the other G74SXs. And that makes me one happy camper.![]()
Now enough of this benchmarking and time to go blow stuff up...World Of Tanks style...![]()

God I love World of Tanks

G73JH Radeon 5870 Stock clocks I get 34.79 instead of 26.93 @ 1600 x 900
Battlefield Bad company 2 (Stock clocks) I get 41.27 instead of 38.14 @ 1600 x 900
I did not tested 1920 x 1080 I might do it latter on the TV.
I'm using the latest 11.8 Drivers from ATI catalyst.
It seems to me like G73JH Owners have no reason to switch to a G74, I did not even tried overclocking my vcard or processor, but I have seen some amazing clocks here as well, you might wanna test Unigine Heavens Benchmark 2.5 basic and share your results with us ^^
Really appreciated! -
Interesting...looks like the Mobility HD5870 still has a lot of life left in it.
I did have a G73JH (the Best Buy model) with the 5870 but I brought it back because I didn't like the screen. I could never get it NOT to look washed out.
I probably should have kept it. -
The method was calibrating the gamma, then contrast and brightness from the windows application or the ATI catalyst Control center. (I used the first)
After like... 3 hours of tuning I got a very nice viewing angles, fantastic colors and better contrast.
I compared it with a the LG-display and they are pretty much equal ^o^
Personally, I can't stand poor graphics and blurry images. I can spend hours finding the best configuration for my Movies and Games, let me show you a screen of my Catalyst Video tuning for watching anime and Movies:
Anime:
Concert 1080p (you might notice the difference in contrast and sharpness)
Laters~ ^^ -
Mubay...do you remember where you found those fixes?
-
There is no contest between the 560M 128bit the 5870M beats it on Texture Fillrate and destroys it on bandwidth overclocked GPU-z'.
-
kingbobyjr, thank you for posting the benchs. Could you post the temps of the OCed GPU too, please?
-
The highest temps I saw on the GPU with an OC of 950 Core Clock / 1900 Shader Clock / 1500 Memory Clock was 67 C. That was after running Furmark for just about two hours.
During the benchmarking and about 10 rounds of World Of Tanks, it never rose above 66C. -
Thank you bro

Start > Control panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Left menu > color calibration
From there you must get to the Gamma calibration step. First you calibrate the most well balanced gamma to your eyes while looking right in front of your screen, then you move around a bit to improve the viewing angles and finally you can lower the brightness and increase the contrast to get best calibration possible.
It's really up to your likes, as for me I like a bit better color vibration and slightly more contrast.
@Dallers: I believe you made a small mistake with your second screen, that's not a 5870M =p -
Has anyone tested Dead Island on the bbk7?
-
-
Thanks for the quick response pal !
im glad that dead island will run smooth on the bbk7, cant wait to test Skyrim and Battlefield 3 !!!! -
-
are these OC settings ok to have on a regular basis? I dont want to deplete the life of my gpu..
-
They are made to last as well unless you intend to keep your laptop for 5 years + anything upto 85-90oC is fine. -
Not to revive a dead thread, but I was curious as to how you got your BBK7 to those numbers, because I tried that with my BBK7 and it keeps crashing. I'm playing Deus Ex: HR and it'll run for a while then it crashes. I can run it around 825 Core Clock / 1700 Shader Clock / 1500 Memory Clock. I was wondering if you did anything different or anything in addition to the MSI Afterburner. Thanks!

Rule number one of overclocking: every card will have a different maximum possible overclock. Basically, the OP got lucky and got a card that overclocks really well, you didn't get as lucky as him and the overclock potential of your card is lower.
