    I'm replacing a great G73JH which had a fatal accident and it was not revived. Best Buy is replacing it I'm told, but what to get.

    Asus G74SX-BBK7 - It seems to be a great replacement to the G73, all but that reduced video card. I think the G74 will still be faster than the G73, but it seems like it's like buying a sports car with a V8 and 6 only working cylinders. It'll do the job, but not like advertised. 2x500gb drives.

    Toshiba Qosimo PSBY5U-01K - I think this is the X775-Q7270, it also has a 560M, but I don't think it's been gimped like the G74. i5 instead of the i7, meh. 1600x900 also. DVD, blah blah blah. Lighter weight, thinner.

    Toshiba = i5, real 560M, 6gb RAM, 640gb HD
    Asus = i7, fake 560M, 8gb RAM, 2x500gb HD

    What would likely be the fastest? I haven't seen much about the Toshiba yet, so I have no numbers to compare it to.

    No it wont sadly. What version of the G73 did you have? If it was the JH then definetely no and if it was the JW or SW again it wont. The gimp is bad.

    I5 is not that bad especially for gaming, and you can just upgrade it for quite cheap anyway. The BBK7 also have 900p so there is no difference there and BBK7 also comes with a DVD player also.

    Difficult choice but sadly for looks and mid range the BBK7 wins, for GPU power Toshiba destroys, the only thing I would buy from Toshiba would be a washing machine.

    I wonder if the GPU in the Toshiba is replaceable though? As opposed to soldered garbage in the G74 (IMO).

    Dallers: Interesting simile lol

    If thats the case then; Id actually take the Toshiba.

    As to which is faster, where GPU is concerned, compared to the JH, neither of them really, the full 560M is reported to be about 15% faster then the 460M? Considering the 5870M is on average 10-13% faster then the 460M, your getting a slight downgrade with the G74's GPU, especially since its soldered. Least with the Toshiba, it might be possible to upgrade it, and if not, least you already have the full 560.

    Compared against each other, it depends, FPS and other GPU heavy games, the Toshiba would win, but CPU ones like SCII and other RTS or MMORPGs, then the G74 due to the i7, but again, you should be able to upgrade the CPU in the Toshiba, as opposed to the GPU in the G74.

    Dont get me wrong, I love ASUS; My G73, two of their motherboards in my custom desktops, a 1015PN netbook, and the Transformer tablet, have all served me well, but I am disappointed in the performance "upgrade" the G74 offers over the previous G73 series, therefore IMO, the Toshiba is the way to go.

    Toshiba laptops are not bad. Infact, my Asus was the first non-Toshiba laptop after four Toshiba laptops in my family. The first one being 6 years old now and still working. Toshiba's are underrated is what I think. Having said that, I totally love my Asus.

    Whats the difference between the gpu's of Asus and Toshiba? What makes Asus the 'fake' one?

    as I have read, the standard 560M has a 192bit bus, while the Best Buy version has limited it to only 128 bit. It essentially reduces the amount of data it can process and display, 2/3's of what it should be.

    I'll agree that they aren't bad, at least for the last several years. Even as late as 2006 Toshiba thought that building faster meant it had to be bigger, thicker, and heavier. That only works in .

    These days it seems that Toshiba has gone the way of high end super cars, more power, sleaker shell, and lower weight than other people's offerings. But that Alienware with the 6970 is really promising.

    If you can buy an Alienware from BB, get it. Else get the Toshiba.

    The saga with BBY repair ended. I had to go back to the store twice, ended up having to make a bit of a scene with a toddler in tow (screaming kids help be frustrated and angry btw, or at least get away with it).

    I ended up with a customer service lead doing the return, the Geek Squad supervisor verifying the low performing 560m via these forums, and the store manager to OK giving me the value of the laptop on a gift card. What a hassle it was. Square Trade is much less hassle than Best Buy's extended warranty.

    I guess at this point, I'm looking at the Alienware m17x ( Link) or Toshiba X775-Q7270 ( Link).

    Both: i7-2630QM, 8gb RAM, USB 3.0, Wifi, Bluetooth

    Alienware: Radeon 6970m, 1600x900, 9.5lbs

    Toshiba: Geforce 560m, hybrid 500gb sata and normal 750gb sata, BlueRay, 1080p, $200 more, 7.5lbs

    The 6970 is so much better than the 560. I'd get the Alienware for that graphics card alone.

    That's where I'm leaning. The additional cost over my G73 is a stumbling block since I wasn't planning to buy a new computer, but I think I've got a couple small gift cards to help a bit. Now I need another few hundred dollars that aren't going to bills or mortgage. =(

    The 6970M will perform significantly better. (On par with 580M)

    You can always upgrade the panel later if you want 1080p
