Try to right click on the speaker icon on the right in the task bar and pick playback devices. Find your speakers, click on it, and set as default. Not guaranteed but try that.

i had the same problem but it was because i disabled one of the audio options and it deleted off the list when i was trying to configure my speakers

Right click the volume button go to sounds go to playback and rightclick realtek and check off show disabled devices then click on the one you want.

I'll rehash my situation. Bought G74sx Dh71 couple of days back. Reformat and install fresh windows 7. Install neccessary drivers from Asus CD.update latest Nvidia and Realtek drivers from direct site. Intially laptop speakers doesnt produce any sound (no nothing is muted) , but went i have battery inserted instead of adaptor , the speak sound came back on. Audio jack is fine with speakers/headphones. only laptop speakers.

Now the problem is intermittent. sometimes after restart speakers is fine sometimes it doesnt work. its probably s
software issue cos i enable Post in bios and theres sound. pls advice

Ps: i did not install creative + THX that comes with the Asus cd
