Asus G771JW fans always on - by design or something wrong?

I'm doing absolutely nothing on it. CPU temps idling at around 40C, Speedfan says fan RPM is around 1800. The noise is not particularly loud but it is annoying in a quiet environment. Windows 10 running FCU, no OC or undervolt.

Any owners here who can compare, normal or not?

The fan control on the Asus is rather meh. You might want to see if you can find fan control software.

I downloaded speedfan but I have no idea how to use it, hahaha, anything more user friendly?

I don't think speedfan lets you overwrite what Asus has specified.

I have a GL702ZC laptop which I had to RMA to Asus for repairs because the fans suddenly started running on maximum about a week ago.
The fans stayed on maximum even inside BIOS after restarting and shutting down the machine several times).
The fan noise in my case is really loud since the BIOS says they are turning at 6650 RPM (yeah... that's quite loud and headache inducing - about 58 db - close to 60 db).

Anyway, the Asus fan control is usually achieved by using the ROG Gaming Centre... but in my case, while the slider was originally working to increase the fan speed, they would just ignore this eventually and cycle further up or down but not stay at a desired setting.

So, Asus utility for fan control leaves a lot to be desired.
It would be useful to set it to 50% during gaming and then auto when not gaming, but realistically, during gaming, the fans in my case just cycled up depending on the GPU load regardless of how I set the slider.

Anyway, the laptops running on maximum started happening a week ago as I said and they do this from boot-up.
Could be a wire that snapped or something... I don't know.

As for your fans running on 1800 rpm... that's not particularly loud or a problem.
It could be by design that they are running all the time.
Have you tried not doing anything on the machine for a while and see if any load on the CPU drops to virtually 0?
In my case (before the fans started running on full blast all the time), they ran in low rotation mode usually, but they had a tendency to turn off as well if the CPU was not being used at all.

How long have you had this laptop?
If its outside the warranty, perhaps you could try re-pasting it with higher quality paste such as GeLid Extreme to gain better thermals and lower fan activity.

    Hi,

    thanks for the informative reply.

I have had the notebook on or off for 2.5 years, but it's been at my brothers for the past year and I've honestly forgot whether the fan was always on before(my brother says yes, but he probably doesn't know what a fan sounds like, lol). It's outside warranty and I'll look into repasting depending on how difficult it is to reach the CPU on this particular model.

As far as CPU activity, yes I've tried doing absolutely nothing, task manager shows 0%, temps idle at 40c, but the fans NEVER completely turn off. They always run at low RPM. It's not a big deal but I'd like them to turn off while I'm not doing anything...

ROG gaming center looks interesting but I think it only supports models with 7th gen processors.

Could be a simple case of dust-buildup preventing the fans from switching off entirely.
When you're opening the laptop, make sure to thoroughly clean the fans and exhaust vents.
Also, re-paste the CPU and GPU with Ge-Lid extreme. It's a non-conductive thermal paste that is almost on par with some of the Liquid Metal stuff.
Liquid Metal can also be non-conductive, but I'd stick with GeLid extreme for now (and unless you are experienced with conductive liquid metal, I wouldn't try using it right now as it can cause massive damage if it ends up elsewhere than the CPU or GPU die).
