Laptop release date is Jan 29th, hopefully the benchmark / spec embargo will lift before then, or we've got a long wait ahead to find out the answers.

The Motherboard shoes that it's a BGA for sure, so it's not really a DTR. It will has a BGA core i9 I think.

Yup, PCWorld said the CPU model, 8950K, I already edited my other post.
Awww, crap, it requires 2x 280w power adapters....
The 17" G701 "big" Zephyrus looks more promising for toting around - and will run on a 65w USB-C power adapter when on the road and 250w PSU normally, and it can reboot on iGPU that would be a good candidate for gaming laptop + all day carry + lightweight PSU.
Mothership isn't shipping till "March", the G701 end of Jan (29th).Last edited: Jan 7, 2019undervolter0x0309, Vasudev and Dr. AMK like this. -
What a disgusting models. How is it possible make it even worse than before?

That's really bad. I thought finally a real MXM RTX came out but its not.
The aerodynamics really helps in increased intake by several folds on paper but I'll wait for official review. With U3 cooler or similar temps should be decent.Dr. AMK likes this. -
U3 cooler wouldn't help with the "Mothership", the "parts" are in the vertical section behind the screen. The "bottom" is the detachable keyboard, unknown what else is in that section, maybe more battery?
The Asus has been using non-MXM AIO components on the motherboard for several years now, since the G751, without notable failures of CPU's or GPU's - I'm sure some do fail, but Asus has been servicing them.
And, I haven't seen a lot of mention (any?) of CPU / GPU failures in G751's after warranty expires either.
Watch the PCWorld video coverage of the 2 laptops, they show the motherboard. And watch the Linus video for views of milled aluminum case shell pieces, pretty wild build details. -

Neat, I guess? I'll have to see real performance specs, but it kinda looks like a backwards Zephyrus with a removable keyboard...

That one looks sick. Wonder what those hinges are made of.undervolter0x0309 and hmscott like this. -
It looks promising... But ultimately curious about the price. It's not my cup of tea but I'm sure it will have suitors. No laptop external fan in use today will be able to cool it though. Linus showed how the body is made of aluminum. Going to have to wait for reviews to see how this notebook will cool in this chassis design.

Love the hardware, hate the design. What kind of affect will the screen suffer with such hot hardware behind it? I didnt watch all the videos, and not sure if they already mentioned something about that. IMO, its just a marketing gimmick.
-
Their is a big slab of aluminum in between the mobo/panel from what I seen in the a video, but ya looks gimicky. I bet the price is $4000++ USD.Raiderman likes this.

If a MXM variant came out most of us would not be able to use it. TDP for the 2080 is 215w with a recommended power supply of 650w. The two bricks with 600w is barely there. And of course it's BGA....Vasudev likes this.

Would have to be something sturdy, and the base made of something sticky since there's about 4kg basically standing near upright on an angle...
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If it were me I'd make the base magnetic, so it snaps into position without needing to rely on friction to stay in place. Not sure what their solution is by the images though. -
-
It's not been classified by Asus as a laptop from the beginning, it's a desktop replacement.
Given the format of the separate units, keyboard / upright with kickstand, it won't sit on a lap.

Yeah, that's getting knocked over ALL THE TIME. I guess don't buy one if you're clumsy, have kids, or have pets.Dr. AMK likes this. -
Yup, wouldn't trust that kickstand design for much. Would probably be afraid of it being hit enough to collapse by someone sitting on the other side of a table with their stuff. Although it is probably (hopefully) much more capable than it looks.
However I really like the idea, as it allows for better cooling options with the less restricted airflow, and perhaps even better, it allows for using a "real" keyboard without sitting 10 miles away from the screen. -

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, and the concept itself is great. I just think that kickstand might need some additional engineering for active environments.undervolter0x0309 likes this. -
I'll give the mothership credit where credit is due. It looks awesome. A portable AIO? Pretty neat idea. But, besides being neat what makes it worth it's rumored $5000 starting price? Especially when it has competition from Alienware and Acer. And both of those have cheaper options.
Eh. . .guess we'll see. Is anyone interested in this do to its form factor? -

That's how a lot of new things get started. Time will tell if it stays popular though.SteveEricJordan likes this. -
Has anyone tried this yet? I want to see if the 780W adapter could go with a Asus ROG G703GX-XB96K which comes with the same dual AC input ports. They list a similar option for the Area 51M (splitter box) but no options for the ASUS

Barely uses over 330W, average display, 52dBA fan noise, in a 7Kg package for 7000€, wtf are they smoking?...
