Yeah Asus 15" laptops are always overpriced.. The 17.3" ROG laptops are actually well priced...

This site also says it comes with a 960m… (if you speak german)
At that steep price it better have a darn good battery live though
-
"reliable sources" that also think this laptop is capable of holding a 2.5" HDD lol
-
So you can now ore-order this from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-209-AS but I'd want to know whether this has a 965M or 960M (big difference) before considering buying it.

I would never pre-order without full details.

AC Adapter: "120W AC Adapter.
Output : 19V DC, 6.3A, 120W.
What GPU could work in that range?
Why the delay, if it has an 860m REBRAND!
-
Because Nvidia must first release it in high enough quantities? Maybe they wait for the GDC in March, where Microsoft will hopefully present the final DX12 specification. I then hope to hear from Green and Red which products might be fully compatible.
-
Who/what is "Green and Red"?
-
Green = Nvidia, Red = AMD
-
Aha! Makes sense now! Thanks
-
Yes most likely the 960M... Just another 860M rebrand.. Fail from NVIDIA and Asus..
-
Boo! If it was much cheaper, it wouldn't be so bad, but at that price I'd expect at least a 965M
-
Yeah the only way this could be worth the money is if the battery life is amazing...
-
Well it does have large battery...
-
Yeah on paper. Can't wait to see the first reviews once it's released.
-
Don't forget, you can't overclock the 9xxm anymore. Not sure what the advantages of the 960m are going to be, but not being able to overclock is going to be a huge disadvantage to even the older 860m. Not sure if this makes sense on why it was delayed. On the plus side, it looks like the price has gotten a little cheaper.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nvidia are likely just allowing old inventory to be cleared.
-
How trustworthy is ROG Marshall? He implies the 960m is not a simple rebrand of the 860m (gm107) but rather the gm204 they use in the desktop 960 GTX with a cut down the shader count.
http://rog.asus.com/399392015/g-ser...15-inch-gaming-laptop-with-4k-pcie-ssd/?tp=14
"I'm pretty sure DP 1.1a is wrong though - should be 1.2a (or whatever GM204 supports)"
It might have more cores than the 640 cores in the 860m (between the 860 and 965 counts ~ 6 SIMMS = 768 maybe?). -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I think he meant maxwell instead of GM204 because that would be silly, if you cut it down any more a GM107 is going to be more efficient.
-
Let me get this straight, the GX500 wasn't considered good enough, so it's been improved and is now the G501?
-
I preferred the smaller size of the GX500 personally, without the numpad
-
The GX500 is now the G501, the only changes in build are 21mm vs 19mm (thickness), larger keyboard, and side facing speakers instead of top.
They are the same size...
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you have to delay a release you would make any improvements to keep it in relevant in the market after all.
-
what's the deal with this.. is it ever coming out? haven't heard of an update in a while.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Asus usually keep their cards close to their chest on full release dates.
-
doesn't look like there'll be an update considering how much of a waste of time that nvidia presentation was.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
GPU announcements are in the next show they are doing like a full break down of Titan, so that's where I would look for any info.
-
here you go.. it's been announced by Nvidia: http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/03/12/mobile-gpu/
wonder how long it'll take Asus to do the same -
Asus ROG G501 now available in stores
https://www.facebook.com/ASUSROG/posts/10153646048262388 -
is there a comparison already to see how much less powerful the 960m is compared to the 970m?
-
Around 60%, looking at the 960m review on notebookcheck: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-960M-Review.137893.0.html
-
I was hoping the 965 at least
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The reason for the delay will have been clearing out inventory of a high volume chip so no one was left with a large backlog of chips they could not sell.
-
Yeah... 60% less is really bad. Differences were rarely that bad in the past.
-
Yes something like 60-70% less powerful then stock 970M... Not surprising at all.. The 960M is just a rebadged 860M with slight OC...
-

It's the recent reluctance fot nvidia to use the mid chip (eg GK106 took ages and GM206) in mobile. -

Well that's severely disappointing. Anything with a 960m in it is a multimedia notebook at best, which would belong in the Y50 and Acer notebooks.
Not something you should find in a 2015 gaming branded notebook. Nobody understands the reasoning behind this going into a ROG product or the Razer Blade "Pro". -
I would rather pay the extra and get the Razer 14 then this.. 960M really? for almost $2000? Go and burn Asus!
-
exactly what i did. was excited for this asus, till specs got confirmed. got the 1080p blade now and pretty happy with it. would've preferred a 15"screen tho.TomJGX likes this.
-
It has a 512 PCI E SSD, a 4K screen, 16 GB of RAM as well as a 96 wh battery for the same price as the 1080p Blade with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 SSD as well as a smaller 70 wh battery. It's not that bad of a deal if you don't want the extra graphical power or if you want a larger screen.
-
yea, but for being marketed as a new ROG machine... this is pretty weak. i would've been instantly sold if this had the 970 in it. it looks like a fantastic media notebook tho.
-
It's not a bad deal at all, it's a premium product for sure with a price tag that isn't bad. But as an ROG machine, a 960m is just a puzzling decision. If it was 20% less powerful than the 970m then this would be a very good contender. But at 60% less it's hard to imagine why the original plan as a GX500 with a 860m didn't make more sense.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It would have to be a totally different design to take a larger GPU. ROG is not about delivering the bleeding edge at the cost of all else.
-
i dunno.. if the Razer Blade can house the 970m in a smaller package, then it's just puzzling why Asus decided not to go with it in a larger housing. and i think Asus should've just left it out of the ROG label and just made it as a regular multi-media model. this is as baffling as Razer's decision to use the 960m in the new "Pro".

A loud and very hot machine you would not want on your lap
-
i was one of the very concerned about the Razer's heat and fan noise before becoming an owner (you can see my many questions in the Razer forum section), and now that I've tried/owned both the QHD+ and FHD versions (kept the FHD version).. i can say that the heat and noise isn't that bad. yes it can get hot after a few hours of heavy gaming, but most sub 17" will as well. but i believe that if it's not that bad in the Razer's smaller chasis, then it would've been fine within the larger 15.6" body of the Asus. during the weekend, i played Mass Effect 3 on ultra, and the fans barely went full blast. granted it's an older game, but i was surprised by it. Skyrim on ultra with a lot of mods also was fairly quiet. i'm just disappointed with Asus, as i was excited about the potential of the G501, and it would've been an instant buy for me.
-
There have been ROG machines with 850M GPUs. The 960M is still a very good midrange GPU. These laptops are built differently. Razer has been able to fit a 970M in that chassis by sacrificing features that the ROG supports. Maybe Asus just couldn't manage it.Last edited: Mar 17, 2015

Same here, it would have been an instant buy for me too, and that says a lot since there are MANY very good options out there right now. I still use Asus' UX51VZ with the 650m that is over two years old now and was hoping this would be a great follow up.
Maybe it's more on Nvidia than Asus, since a GPU that was less capable than the 970m would have been fine, but IMHO the 965m/960m were just too much of a compromise and there is nothing in between. -
I probably would've gotten it, if it had the 965m in it instead.
