I too believe that G551 will come with subwoofer, but check out this video review, which other user found - Asus G551JM video review. There's nothing about subwoofer :/

Then 2GB GDDR5 should be plenty for you.

I hate to speculate, but I am doubtful there will be GTX960M anytime soon. If you look specs of upcoming G751 models, they are equipped with GTX860M, GTX970M & GTX980M. This would also mean bye kepler for good.

Yeah, and it'll be surprise for anyone that GTX960M (mid-end gaming graphic) will be released in this year.. From my observations Asus release mid-end graphics always at the end.

Well if it's true then maybe you're right and G551 will have one, wish that come true, because ROG design fits me in most ways :D N551, however got very nice design too. I've been using N56JR for some time and I can see it's almost the same laptops :)

If this really is the GL551, the screen is incredibly good. The angles of view are okay. If this really is the GL551 on video, why everyone complains laptop.

From the video, it looks like an IPS screen.
GL551 and G551 are alike, but some details, such as the screen.

In Canada, most sites only mentions the G551 and not the GL551.
    (Specifically: G551JM-DH71-CA)

Furthermore, there is another video about a G771: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaI33PdQXls
The latter is the 17inch version of the G551. Exactly, it has a IPS screen.

In conclusion, the G551 and G771 have the IPS screen in my opinion.
I saw the Y50, and the screen is very far behind the screens shown in these videos.

To support my point, here's Canadian sites mentioning G551:

    http://www.amazon.ca/G551JM-DH71-CA-CI7-4710HQ-GTX860M-6CELL-Laptop/dp/B00NAQCEBO
    G551jm-dh71-ca,black,15.6in Fhd (1920x1080),i7-4710hq,intel Hm86 Express,8gb Ddr - G551JM-DH71-CA
G551JM-DH71-CA - CRC Ordinateur - Groupe Millenium Micro

In another case, Asus could have changed the name of the laptop in Canada.
GL511JM change its name to simply call G551JM in some countries.

I have trouble believing that, but it is possible.

Asus is annoying, they could at least tell me the release date for the N551 or G551.. I'm really hurting for a new laptop and they are going to lose my business soon.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't expecting a top of the line gaming laptop but a bad screen wouldn't be good. The rest sounds fine. He's using a dieing MacBook now for school. Lots to think about.

It seems that GL got non-IPS panels and G got IPS panels. Anyway.. I don't see external subwoofer on this 17' laptop review, ehh, Asus dissapoints me again. Why they didn't add external subwoofer to gaming series like in old brothers?

I guess from now I am waiting for N551.

If you watch the video, during his test on 3dmark, it says G551JM.

Also it doesn't look like this is a subwoofer for this model. There is no plug for it like the N550jk.

Maybe it got 1 fan, but G56JR could handle a warmer chip in good temps, so this single fan can handle maxwell in even better temps :)

It doesn't make sense to just have one cooling fan on a gaming laptop even the y50 has 2 fans.

Also can someone please clarify. I thought that the g551 was supposed to come with a 4k resolution screen? Did they just decide to change all the sudden?

I didn't said that 1 cooler is better than 2, ofcourse 2 are batter but I said that it could handle it. Look at this G56JR review and temps on the case. Scroll down and 'Temperatury obudowy - spoczynek:' means 'Case temperatures - IDLE:' and 'Temperatury obudowy - obciążenie:' means 'Case temperatures - load:' btw check this review and note that Asus added external subwoofer to this model. So should they make step back with newer laptop?

Does anybody know the estimated timeframe the N551 is supposed to come out. I desperately need a laptop and I'm willing to wait a little longer but not the December timeframe, would have to be October or November.

I just ordered one. But I ordered from CyberPowerPC.com

They call it the Raven X6 and it was about 300 less than Xotic after a coupon code. Was amazed at the price. 1140 shipped with SSD and Windows 8. And it has IPS :D

Looks like I was wrong then when I said the GL551 was the same as the G551. Hope it hits soon, guess they were trying to dump old panels for cheap. Curious how much more the G551 will cost.

I'm needing a new laptop for school and I have been debating between the GL551 and the Y50. I will be using it for some gaming, programming, CAD, and other homework. Which of these laptops would be better for my needs, or is there another that i may have overlooked in this price range? I'm not worried about having an IPS screen, and although good speakers would be a plus, I would be using headphones most of the time. Which has better build quality, and which has a better cooling system? Any advice is appreciated.

Build quality in Asus are best from my personal experience (I can say that I am an perfectionist). In that example which you mentioned I can say that G551 wins easily. Not sure about cooling, but I've read that case of Y50 gets very warm. I've used N56JR which got same case as G551 and 1 cooler inside but graphics (GTX760M) were on kepler chipset, and it produces more heat and consume more power than maxwell chips. Anyway temperatures on load in N56JR doesn't bother me so much, it was warm at WSAD keys but not hot.

Y50 is cheaper from what I see, but G551 fits my preferences in most ways and I'll suggest you to take G551 but you have to make a good choice for you, not for me. They got same specs, both got powerful performance and I think both will perform great.

PS. You should check N551 too, it got same configuration as G551 but diffrent design and Asus adds external subwoofer to them, which is better choice than G551 for me. I really don't know why Asus is so stupid to make such a bad move with gaming laptops. For example G56JR got external subwoofer, and G750 have internal subwoofer, so why do they take this subwoofer from G551.. not really sure, just stupid move.

Hey guys, just as an update, I ended up getting the GL551. It should be here on Thursday. If you guys want, I can do an RGB test on it since most people seemed to be interested in the quality of the monitor. That should get a pretty definitive idea as to the exact quality of the monitor and its calibration. Caveat is, someone is gonna have to tell me how to run it :p

Any reviews on the GL551 yet. How well does it handle heat, do the speakers perform well without the external subwoofer, battery timings, build quality, trackpad and keyboard performance. This should give some idea of what to expect from the g551.

The laptop stays cool during gaming, but I haven't played any high graphic-demanding games yet.
The speakers perform well.. but usually I use an external one so no comment on that.
Battery is around 4-5 hours when not playing games and on medium brightness.
Build quality is good, in my opinion, feels smooth and solid.
Keyboard and trackpad are two things I like the most about this laptop, especially the trackpad - it feels so good and accurate.
    Hope this helps...

Well, from what I've seen - build quality of this laptop is same as in N56JR and G56JR, it's almost the same case so you can go to the shop and check it's build. I think build quality will be the same - for me it's the best from laptops in this price range.

I'm trying to understand ASUS' strategy. Both the G551 and N551 with the IPS screens should already be on the market. Even worse, no one seems to know when they'll be out. They seem to be out of touch with their customers and potential customers, who are willing to put down hard earned money on their products. It's frustrating waiting to purchase one of their laptops with no release dates. Kudos to everyone in this thread for helping those of us who have little to no information on their upcoming products (with current gen hardware for crying out loud). Hopefully we all get some clear details on the model we're waiting for... the G551 with the IPS screen.

I am currently very interested in the G551 laptop as my first ASUS laptop. It looks like a phenomenal machine, being a very longtime HP user. I was comparing the Lenovo Y50 model and the ASUS G551 looks like the better choice. Is there word on when this will be released in the US with the IPS screen and the GTX 860M?

I was browsing the thread and it seems as if there isn't word yet when they'll be releasing this model. I am hoping it is sometime in October.

And regular and Asus enthusiasts, how has your experience with these laptops been? I have been a very longtime HP user and have nearly never run into problems. I consider their products to be top notch for laptops until recently, unfortunately, which explains why I'll be migrating to an Asus machine. The current line of HP laptops are great, they just don't currently have available many upgrade options that meet or better the standards and specs of my current HP laptop I am on. The G551 really catches my eye and by the looks of it looks like a quality machine inside and out.

I guarantee they are banking on people buying it who don't know any better. They know the more educated among the market and the enthusiasts will likely wait for the "right" laptop. They're probably banking on the fact that no other company has a machine that is comparable.

The closest one i can think of is the MSI GE60. It 860m maxwell, has the samsung PLA which is for all intents and purpose an IPS screen, its just not so great on build quality in comparison.

This doesn't belong here. Besides this is the most ugly POS laptop ever. No comment on the plastic hinge (display) either.
