Asus now has several GTX 1080 models.
The GX800VH which is the water-cooled SLI GTX 1080 model
https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks/ROG-GX800VH/
The G800VI which is the water-cooled single GTX 1080 model
https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks/ROG-G800VI/
And, now a G701VI air-cooled single GTX 1080 model.
https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/ROG-G701VI/
Asus also has the GTX 1070/1060 single GPU GL702/GL502 which have a similar thin profile like the G701VI, but there is no current GTX 1080 model GL702/GL502.
The Asus G752VS is also a single GTX 1070 model. There is currently no GTX 1080 G752 model.

Not many video's covering the G701VI yet...
-
I'm waiting patiently until this laptop will be available and I can see a review... As I heard, those Asus G models have bad overclocking and heat dissipation...
-
All of my Asus laptops have OC'd, CPU and GPU, with undervolt and auto fan speeds they were all quiet and didn't throttle - they were the quietest running at the time of all other brands.
The G701VI is a thin laptop with a 1080, it's going to be a flame thrower just like all the other GTX 1080 models, except this one is even thinner than all but the Aorus X7 - which is a good thing - the Asus G701VI should be able to do a better job cooling with that slightly greater thickness (1.3" vs 1.x")
Let's wait and see what the reviews show, but even then we haven't been getting experienced reviewers covering new laptops, just amateurs with their own quirks and beliefs, so you need to watch the numbers and how they treat them.
They also don't tune the laptop, so out of the box they will tend to run quieter rather than cooler, up until it hits maximum before thermal throttling, then the fans kick in and cool it down below the throttling point, and keep it there.
Don't look to get a cool running 1080, in any package, but especially in a thin laptop - the hot exhaust air is gonna be hot enough to pop popcornLast edited: Oct 9, 2016 -
I hope, I'm happy to talk with someone that knows Asus G laptops, because I'm waiting those pascal laptops since March, and I keep waiting, but it's a shame that the G701VI don't have a RGB keyboard, I would go for the G800VI but it's too expensive and the 4K display doesn't convince me, I want refresh rate
-
It's going to be weeks / months for things to become clear, and by then the next round of laptops with Kabylake Series 200 motherboard chipsets and Pascal refresh will be out.
It's a constant flurry of information to come to terms with, it takes a while to sync up and be able to get the core info out of what is available.
You can't just jump in and get what you want after a few bits of research, but you can get close.
Not too much really bad out there, except at the top end, both 1080 SLI laptops are really pushing the limits of cooling and power, but stepping down to single 1080 or 1070, or 1070 SLI gives good results.
It will be fun to see how all the single 1080 laptops fair dealing with thermal and power demands -
And I can pop popcorn in my microwave if I have to
But that's me

I have 3500€ to waste on a laptop and I don't know what I can have with that money, I would like to have a G800VI for that money in europe, but the 4K is not what I wish, It would be nice to be able to configure a G laptop at your own way here in Europe...
Do the prices of the Skylake + GTX 10 series will drop a bit when Kaby Lake will appear in the "upgraded models"?
Sorry but I'm very excited by the performance of those and I have a lot of questions...
Ohhh btw, I love the G800 chasis, If I could swap it and use it for a G701VI it would be a dream... -
All the rest are unknown's until they release.
As with all these high performance laptops, you have anywhere from 3-6 months of being "on top" with a uniquely advantageous configuration / performance, and then another competitor or the same make will offer an upgraded version, or another model.
Pick something you think you can live with over a long ownership, and take care to make an effort to remind yourself of this specific long term decision over the life of ownership, lest your eye stray's and becomes infatuated with another wallet ruiner -
800€ since 2009, my laptop served me very good
But I can see that is the time to upgrade...hmscott likes this. -
BTW, do you know if the G701VI screen is IPS ? -
17.3" (16:9) LED backlit FHD (1920x1080) 120Hz Anti-Glare Panel with 72% NTSC with G-Sync
This Asus 120hz panel is likely TN to meet the required 8.33ms minimum response time requirement to fully support 120hz refresh.
The G701VI Overview page describes the Display:
"WORLD'S FIRST 120HZ WIDE-VIEW PANEL WITH NVIDIA G-SYNC SUPPORT
ROG G701 is the world's first laptop with a super-fast 120Hz panel that supports NVIDIA® G-SYNC™ technology for fast-paced games. G-SYNC synchronizes the display's refresh rate to the GeForce graphics card to ensure super-smooth visuals. G-SYNC minimizes frame-rate stutter, and eliminates input lag and visual tearing. It delivers the smoothest and fastest gaming graphics — all without affecting system performance!"
"Wide-view" is a buzzword to indicate a newer design "TN" panel.
This is a tough generation of displays to say with assurance what technology is actually used for the display implementation.
Some say "IPS-like" which refers to viewing angles and color similarity to IPS, but are actually improved TN panels.
Some say "IPS-level" which wants to say this panel is also an IPS panel but due to licensing / trademark / copyright issues they can't call it IPS, usually AHVA technology.
The fastest 120hz panels are all TN, there is one that is AHVA at 120hz but the panel response time is 25ms which is way too slow to redraw frames fully between refreshes at 120hz; 25ms response time is only fast enough to redraw a frame fully at 40hz.
TN is still the fastest response time panel boasting 4ms-5ms or faster, with 8.33ms minimum response time needed to fully redraw a frame between refreshes at 120hz
The G701VI panel specification on the Asus product page:
17.3" (16:9) LED backlit FHD (1920x1080) 120Hz Anti-Glare Panel with 72% NTSC with G-Sync
This Asus 120hz panel is likely TN to meet the required 8.33ms minimum response time requirement to fully support 120hz refresh.FrozenLord likes this. -
Doesn't this now hold the crown for thinnest GTX 1080 laptop? Or is the Aorus x7 thinner.
Edit: Nvm found the specs, Aorus is thinner at exactly 1 inch http://www.aorus.com/Product/Spec/X7 DT v6
"At just 1.3in thin, ROG G701 is the world's thinnest gaming laptop to feature NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 graphics." I guess Asus was really eager to get a win there, marketing should probably pay closer attention.Last edited: Oct 9, 2016 -
Thinest usually means the hottest running worst cooling, so at least there is a chance that the Asus G701VI GTX 1080 17.3" laptop will cool better than the Aorus X7 GTX 1080 model.
Phew!! -
Hey if you can win an Olympic race by 0.3" why not a laptop cooling race?
I just know this is going to be interesting either way.hmscott likes this. -
I just pre-ordered one of these from HIDevolution - first gaming laptop, and first new system in ~8 years.
I'll be happy to answer any questions once it arrives - been using these forums (and [H]ardForums) for a while so why not give something back!scorpio187 and hmscott like this. -

So the Asus G701VI is out on HID
Anyone getting it? Also did anyone find some reviews?
As for Aorus X7 DT.. It seems to somehow cool itself very well despite the thin package so it is possible (loud like **** though)
I am on the verge of buying a new 1080 laptop and I'm eager to find out things about this Asushmscott likes this. -

Argh the suspense is killing me more. I bought the G752VS (1070) back in late August, a day or two before finding out Asus were releasing the 1080 equipped G701VI in fall. I returned it to Amazon, and I’ve been waiting ever since.
First it was late September, then October, now November 18th! Asus need to seriously work on their PR, every Asus contact I spoke to all pointed to a “late 2016 release”!
So HID don’t have them in stock yet (Ted from HID told me they list them as in stock a week before getting a shipment in to gauge actual orders/interest).
Amazon US list it arriving this Friday the 18th. So all bets are on this Friday, given Amazon are usually bang on release dates.hmscott likes this. -
Guys, heads up, EXcaliberPC have them in stock and on Amazon, get them whilst you can!

-
Another flamethrower...bummer
-
The internal temps are something else though, CPU is pretty hot in the mid to upper 90's, yipe!!
Here are the 3dmark 11 and 3dmark Fire Strike scores, not bad, not great - I wouldn't think there is much room for OC in that thin profile case.
3dmark11 - P19899
Graphics - 28550
Physics - 10473
Combined - 10353
3dmark Fire Strike 1.1 - 16,722
Graphics - 22074
Physics - 12013
If that laptop were an otherwise keep, good scores, good cosmetics, good screen, this is one I would repaste and hope for better temps and an increase in score from non-throttling temps.
Still want this one...Last edited: Nov 22, 20160Style likes this. -

I have seen Asus CPU's that run hot like that respond well to re-pasting.
The keyboard and wrist-rest are running cool, so if the re-paste worked, it's a keeper -

I just got a G701VI From EXcaliberPC.com and mine has horrible light bleed lower right corner. its really bad they said nothing they can do. only offer refund. I paid $170 to get this overnight to me so sending back for refund not a option for me not impressed with there service. also when i tried to register my serial with asus said serial already register.
-
Use the technical response system to contact Asus once registered to talk to them about fixing the light bleed.
You have time to get things fixed, no need to panic.
The staff at ExCaliber should offer to send you a box to review the laptop to see if they can adjust the bezel attachments to reduce the light bleed.
All IPS panels have light bleed to one extent or another due to the attachment points pressure against the panel. So far noone has figured out a way to stop it.
Usually that light bleed is only most visible briefly during boot, and when viewing a completely dark screen. I make sure to pick a desktop background that flatters the view rather than accentuate the bleed, and I have had lots of IPS screens over the years, you get past the minimal light bleed.
Good luck, and please come back and let us know how ExCaliber and Asus work it out for you. -
ExCaliber said light bleed is normal and only offered to send label to send back for refund. i paid $170 in shipping so thats not a options and I was told this is PLS Pane. this light bleed is very bad almost like a flash light shining through.

Greeting Asus Community.
Well...where do I find Asus G701 and GX800 official English video trailer? Cause the one (G701) I found in Youtube was in Deutch. Thanks. -
-
Maybe try taking the picture in the dark, with completely black screen, that will show the backlight bleed in contrast with the corners/areas without glow through. -
-
Time to return to vendor and order another one from another batch.
Unless the vendor wants to take a shot at fixing it for you. Send them that photo and see what they can do.
Ask the vendor / sender to open the next one and check it out for you before shipping it to you.
All these boutique shops should be screening these laptops before sending them to you, blind drop shipments direct from factory are worse than buying retail.
Where's the added value?Last edited: Nov 27, 2016 -
This is really sad because I am going to Loose $160 in overnight shipping if I send it back to ExCaliber PC . and they said they don't check screen for light bleed before shipping . I really like the laptop just the screen is horribl

You could call around other vendors and see if you can find one that will open it up and check the light bleed before sending.
The other possibility is to RMA it to Asus for service and fixing the light bleed. I would try the RMA route only if you otherwise are really happy with the laptop, and can't find another vendor to help with the light bleed problem.
It's a problem with the attachment points around the bezel pinching the display just so - that it puts pressure on the display and causes the light bleed.
Please come back and let us know what you end up doing and how it works out. -
Hi hmscott.
Do you think Asus G701 and GX800 will have their trailer? -

Can you please post a new photo, and maybe put together a how to step by step, and / or a Video showing how to fix it?Last edited: Nov 29, 2016 -

Has anyone updated to the latest Nvidia drivers or Geforce Experience? Just updating the Geforce experience gave me issues and I rolled back to stock from:
https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks/ROG-G701VI/HelpDesk_Download/ -
There were problems past 373.06 with G-sync, but I heard that was fixed as of 375.70.
Maybe try 375.70 or go as far back as 373.06 ?
Also, Nvidia Hotfix Driver 375.76 is out. Download here: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4250
This is GeForce Hot Fix driver version 375.76 that addresses the following:
- Occasional flicker on high refresh rate monitors
- Artifacts in GIFs
Unless you need the features for a new game, maybe stick with the Asus version for now.Last edited: Nov 30, 2016 -
