Yesterday on Asus ROG facebook page i saw this.:
"ASUS REPUBLIC OF GAMERS CeBIT is coming up in a few days and ROG is going to showcase the new ROG G74 Gaming Series notebook. What do you think is the difference between this and the previous verison?"
Any ideas on what spec it will be ?![]()

i7 2xxxQM, AMD HD 69xx series, .... OMG
Or GTX 460M Sli and 6870M Crossfire !!! -
Dont know about crosfire. Asus has kept their G series slim and fitting 2 GPU-s in there would make the rig a bit large. A single 6970M is what i think it will have. SB processor is a def. Prob. gone have 1 or more USB 3. Thats about all i can think.

it's gonna have a 68xx card, not a 6970.. -
To keep it cheap then it might yes have the 68xx GPU. Strange eurocome skiped the 6800 series card and have an option of crossfire or single 6970.
But there is always hopeWe will find out the specs soon.

Can you please provide some sources?

I think I've read somewhere that 5870 > 6870. I really can't wait to hear if the new G series laptops will have 6870 or 6970
-
-
Gary key only mentioned it being the 68xx series.
-
I guess there is a positive either way.
1) if it's a 6870, then there is no reason to upgrade. (I don't see them using this GPU)
2) if it's a 6970 and you do upgrade you get a 40% GPU boost, which is pretty good.
My guess is it will be a 6970 (Gary may have had a typo or just forgotten or been misinformed). There is no good reason to use a 6870 w/lesser performance. Maybe it is cheaper, but if they are going to compete with alienware they'll need a comparable GPU. -
-
It should be soon enough that gary key will update us about this.
-
Also, this performance decrease is (annoyingly) in line with the desktop counterparts. The 5870 desktop is faster than the 6870, 5850 > 6850, etc.. -
-
-
Keep in mind, that the 6970M has a "slightly" higher TDP
We all know about the heat problems of the G73 JH with i7 -
-
Lets wait those 4 days until u can see it on the Cebit.
Maybe the 6870M is a little bit slower than the 5870M but it have some new features and maybe its more clockable because of a better process of TSMC
EDIT: And it looks like better 2D clocks -
A "proper" Asus ROG G74 with Sandy Bridge & ATI Mobility HD 6970 would be so nice.
And to sweeten the deal would be to get a Intel "Light Peak" port but i wont expect perfection. xD
I been saving up my hard earned cash for a while now (Since Asus G73JH) and can actually afford one of the sweet Asus gaming notebooks now.
Just hope it doesent get any minor issues at launch. -
The 6970m has power and cooling requirements that are significantly higher.
Asus would need to use a 180 to 200 watt power supply and a better cooling system.
The card may be more expensive as well.
The 6970m is basically a counter to the 485m except not as expensive.
As for the 6870m, 25 mhz is negligible as far as performance is concerned.
It's probably not 1 fps on a 60 fps game. -
Our last solution is the HD 6950M, which have similar power consumption to the GTX 470M which have same power consumption to the GTX 460M !!!
-
It would be interesting to see if the refreshed system had an MXM GPU that could be swapped/upgraded in the G73, much like the G50Vt and G51/60 were
-
I actually hope it is a 6870. Then the motivation/desire to upgrade will be completely removed. Then I can spend my money on a new Xoom tablet or something.
-
It will be an MXM. Dont think they will but a non MXM in there. THe question will be if they make a vBios for the G73 to support the new card.
Hope its a 6970 card but starting to think it will prob be a 6870 as they will want to keep it as cheap as possible. -
I think the G74 isnt worth to buy, because u have only some CPU performance boost but no graphical.
I think Ivy Bridge will give an extra boost with a new HD7XXXXM because of their new productionprocess (22/28nm)
So "cheap" quad will be on i7-29xx level and GPU will on 6870D-6950D level whats about 50% faster than a 5870M -
Keep in mind that the 6870m may, I said may, have better DX11 support due to driver updates. Some of the advanced features that we've in recent AMD/ATI drivers, such as MLAA and tesselation adjustment were originally meant for the 68xx and 69xx series desktop.

Anyone who can link to Asus ROG facebook page?
-
Considering that my notebook has a ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 the upgrade to the HD 6870 would be so frikkin huge it would be over 9000%. xD
Also i might get Minecraft running without lag? -
If its anything like the desktop 6870 then going from G73 to G74 would be pointless. DEagleson for you it would be a def. upgrade.

There's this press release too:
-
Now we need to send some trusted members of Notebookreview.com to secretly feed us hidden secrets from that event linked in the comment above me.
Mohahahahaha -

Thats no fun. D:
Any spies available in five days? -
I hope this G74 is a real deal (as in a significant upgrade over the G73). I was within hours of ordering a G73 before the SB issues, I would have been rotted if I have ordered and then the G74 was introduced.
Don't know if I agree with Asus with not releasing a roadmap. I think it would result in a lot less pissed off people with brand new SB G73s wishing they had waited 1.5 months. I know, i know.. they are running a business... anyways just a rant. Like I mentioned elsewhere in a different forum, this SB mess is a blessing. -
G74 just doesn't have a good ring to it. :/
-
Haha... those are my thoughts on how the G73 looks! Though I'd still buy one.
I'd like to see a "normal" looking G74 with the same cooling. For some reason I doubt that is gonna happen. -
I love the design of the G73, best looking laptop on the planet!
Everyone has their own opinion but I hope they keep the basic look of the G73 chassis with just some refinements for the G74. -
They've got to get rid of the annoying, dust trapping and deceptively wide speaker grill!
As far as the G74 looking normal I don't think any G series laptop has been without some kind of bling or design theme.
To me they finally hit on something with the G73 stealth theme. -
Yeah to each their own, a little too flashy (hey look at my laptop everyone!!!) for me. I am the understated type. Of course, I have never had one in my hands, I might think it was the coolest thing out there.
Can't beat the design for cooling though which is the exact reason I wanted the G73 after my HP DV7 cooked itself. I won't be heart broken if it is identical looking. -
-
They should make the Asus logo light at the back of the sceen like the G53!
-
Of course aren't they releasing a roadmap. That would affect the sales, and such. -
so, are we going to get some real informations soon or not?
-
Next week when CeBIT starts then you will definitely know something about design and maybe some of the inner hardware
-
thanks, let's wait and hope then
-
Don't you guys think this is the rog g74 back?
-

I learned just now that the G53 has this white led light for its Asus logo at the back of the screen ^_^
-
I belive that pic was of a new asus mouse. The letters seem to small and to be honest would look crap on a 17" notebook.
Asus ROG G74 coming?
