    nice find.

Likes: dedicated power button, white letter keys. Topside intake vent?? Exhaust vents are not obstructed.

Dislikes: still looks too gamer-y and childish.

I wish they would make an understated sleeper chassis, like the G501.

    These things are way overstyled

Esports gaming laptops defined by the ROG Strix GL503 and GL703

The new ROG Strix GL503 and GL703 series deliver the best combination of price, performance, and portability. And for the first time, versions have been tailored exclusively for different types of esports games. The Hero Edition is designed for MOBAs, while the SCAR Edition is tweaked for competitive FPS gaming. There's also a traditional version without genre-specific touches.

    upload_2017-6-16_18-50-27.jpeg

These ROG Strix laptops are predominantly black with luxurious brushed-metal covers. At the core of each one lies the latest Intel 7th Gen. Core i7 or i5 processor, up to 32GB of memory, and a Pascal-based GTX 10-series GPU. Here's a look at the different designs:

They have updated the specification page of GL503:
    ROG Strix GL503 Specifications

No G-Sync and it seems there will be GTX 1050/1050Ti & 1060 configurations.

Asus has stopped deploying the web page, maybe updating specs.
Does anyone know when will it be available on shops ?, I plan to fly to the US in about 15 days and would like to buy it.

Yeah, you were right about their website. I tried to look for it, too, this morning but I couldn't find it either. And about the release date, I am afraid that it won't be released until September. I really hope I was wrong on that release date because I am looking forward to getting one myself, too.

Google search cached a page on the GL703 that is currently not live on the asus site:

    https://webcache.googleusercontent....ps/ROG-Strix-GL703/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I'm considering this notebook as an alternative option to the gl502vs-ds71 due to the unresolved power draw issues. The cache paged lists "1060 gtx" so I'm hoping this is just a template issue with their website not being ready as thh GL703 was supposed to ship with a 1070 option :p

Yes, the GL703 will be shipped with the GTX 1070 option. But I think that is for the Scar Edition (eSport version of the GL703).

The price of the normal GL503/703 should be similar to the current GL502/702. But the Hero and Scar Edition might cost extra

What??? 1060 with 3gb?? What is Asus smoking?

They better offer a 1070 to go along with that 120hz display.

    I'm hoping it's a typo.

Looks like I won't be waiting. Excalibur PC has the prices up for Pre Order and the specs below will cost you a whopping $1300. What the hell is Asus thinking. Will anyone buy this laptop at this price?

    ASUS GL703VD-DB74 (Kabylake), Intel Core i7-7700HQ (2.8GHz - 3.8GHz) Processor, 17.3" 60Hz G-Sync Full HD (1920 x 1080) 72% NTSC Display, 16GB (1x 16GB) DDR4 2400MHz Memory, 256GB SATA SSD + 1TB 5400RPM HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 (4GB) GDDR5 Graphics Card, Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit), 802.11 AC Wireless LAN (Dual Band), Bluetooth 4.1, HDMI, Mini Display Port, USB 3.1 Type C, 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0, 4-Zone RGB Illumination Keyboard

I'm really hoping it's a typo. Here is why I'm thinking it's just bad information. If they were going to put a 1050 card in it then Asus would at least use the 1050ti.

Also I thought the display was supposed to be 120hz.

So I'm still hopeful that the "scar" edition of the GL703 will have a 1070.

The main GL703 page was updated with final marketing material and config: https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-Strix-GL703/

While there's no 1070 listed here, they do have more configs than excaliburpc lists. My guess is that the "scar" and "hero" editions of the GL503 and GL703 won't release until after the standard configs start shipping.

They probably finally realized that the cheap thermal management system they use in this chassis isn't good enough to keep a 1070 system in check.

you're referring to the GL502? Yeah, if it is as fiery as reported, then it makes sense for them to just save on RD and use that cooling system for a 1060. They invested a lot in the Zephyrus already, so won't be expecting many custom designs from them

Product page went live today https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-Strix-SCAR-Edition/

GL703VD (SCAR Edition) GL703VM (SCAR Edition) have 1050 and 1060 respectively. No VS is listed...

It's important to note that the panels on these both list as TN... WTF

    17.3-inch Full HD (1920 by 1080) TN panel, 120Hz, 5ms, 94% NTSC
    17.3-inch Full HD (1920 by 1080) TN panel, 120Hz, 5ms, 94% NTSC

    503VD/VM also lists the same...

    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-Strix-Hero-Edition/Tech-Specs/

something is fishy here. any insights?

Looks like low cost Esports Gaming laptops, why put an IPS panel in there? Refresh rate isn't listed, a 120hz would make sense for this use.

They put a TN panel in there because a lot of gaming laptops are going the route of low response times. I would imagine a IPS panel with 5ms response time is very expensive. Either way, there are some very good TN panels out there right now. MSI uses some good ones in their GT models.

I just want to know when these are going to go on sale and how much they will be. They announced them 3 months ago.

Also, are the fans really upgraded from the 502/702 models?

These notebooks are thinner, but apparently they ditched the 1070 GTX.. so I'd imagine the cooling isn't any better than the 502VS/702VS

Damn. Can't believe Asus has the balls to go thinner after they already proved they can't make a sufficient thermal system in the thicker 702.

They should have kept the thickness of the 702 and just redesigned the thermal system. Maybe separate CPU/GPU heat pipes. Shared pipes are one of the reasons why these laptop's are running hot.

Hey, at least they look good.

Did they decide to just cut the 1070 instead of upgrading cooling? No way there is thermal headroom in this chassis

Interestingly enough they do mention the 1070 near the VR section on that page.

According to what I know, and after talking to some of the Asus ROG representatives from another country, the SCAR will have the gtx 1070 version with 144 Hz 7 ms (TN prob) panel sometimes around Q4, but rumours to be around Thanksgiving or even Christmas. And about the thermal, Asus has redesigned it. The fans on the 502/702 are only 5v, but 503/703 are 12v, so it should do a better job. Last but not least, one of the issues for the 502/702 to have heat problem is its panel. If u pay attention, the panel somewhat blocks the air flow whenever u open the laptop. That I believe causes the fan to suck the hot air back in.

Another strange thing is the fact that they don't seem to have a USB 3.1 Gen 2? They only mention Gen 1, where as the 502/702 do carry a Gen 2 port.
We'll have to wait and see for more info to come i guess

Following up on Mr. H, i just noticed the product page of the SCAR under Display mentions the 144hz display as well! Would be great news if the 1070 would be fitted in to the SCAR! :D
    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-Strix-SCAR-Edition/

Edit: Just Noticed the GL503 and Hero page both specifically note the up to NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 graphics (GL503), or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or 1060 graphics to rule the on-screen action (GL503 Hero). The SCAR however just talks about NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 10-Series graphics. Maybe room for a full blown 1070?

To add up even more details on this, if you select "Learn more about performance" at the Hero version is states "with up to 6GB GDDR5 VRAM and is packed with as many as 1280 CUDA®cores. It also offers a top boost-clock speed of 1670MHz" = Mobile GTX 1060.

The SCAR however states "packed with as many as 2048 CUDA® cores and the highest boost-clock speed of 1645MHz" = Mobile GTX 1070, so we can conclude there will be an GTX 1070 version in the near future! :D

    (I'm getting overexcited i guess :p)

fan control doesn't make much of a difference.

if it's anything like the fan control in existing GL models, the max auto fan speed is 5100 rpm, and fan boost is 5400rpm.

The extra 300rpm didn't do much for cooling, as I was monitoring with hwinfo64 while gpu and cpu were under load.
