yeah for me GE63VR raider was good choice, but they just have TypeC Gen 2 and no support thunderbolt 3,
for the XPS 15 9560 cases, its just have 2 lane, the brand new XPS 9570 will have 4 lanes full speed according to notebookcheck, it will hit early 2018.

actually i think the design limitation excuse is bullsheet. MSI was able to put 4 lane thunderbolt, along with gtx1060 in the gs63 Stealth

The laptop was indeed loud. Even though it was loud I did enjoy my short time playing Overwatch on it. Having IPS, 144hz, 4ms, and GSync for my desktop monitor has really spoiled me. The GL503VS is probably the closest thing I can get to matching that experience in a mobile form factor at the moment.

Unfortunately I will be returning the current one I have and hopefully getting an exchange due to it have a dent/crease on the right side of the lid and having a black speck in the middle of the screen. Not sure if it is dust but its not a dead pixel.

Hey I have a few questions if you don't mind

1:- How warm does the keyboard area get while playing games continuously after a hour or two?

2:- Did you notice any thermal throttling?

3:- Where did you buy the laptop from?

4:- How loud are the fans???( Please post a video if you can!)

5:- What kind of battery life do you get with the brightness at about 30%, Battery saver enabled, and screen at 60hz while doing normal productivity work like taking notes or browsing the web?

6:- Is the 15.6 inch screen good for gaming and multimedia consumption? I currently own a 17.3 inch Dell DTR that I recently gave to my parents and wanted a 17.3 inch laptop for college but needed portability.

    7:- Can it run Crysis? :D :D

Can anyone help me pick the right kind of M.2 SSD to upgrade my GL503VM? Mine came with 128GB only, so I want to upgrade soon. I read about M.2's and ended up a little confused about which kind to buy, and Asus support was not helpful.

    Would this one work?

    To Ikjot Singh, here are my replies since I own the GL503VM from Bestbuy for $1299 USD (7800, 16GB RAM, 1060 3GB, 128 M.2 + 1TB HDD):

So, I have made a fresh windows install on my new GL503VM, and now I am kind of stucked with blue rgb backlight keyboard because the support webpage of the laptop doesn't have the aura sync drivers...
It is also a shame that the dedicated ROG button cannot be customized! I have desinstalled the asus software and now I have a button that does nothing...

Anyways, after making some undervolting to the cpu and the gpu, while gaming for some hours the max temps I get are around 80C, both for the cpu and the gpu... Well, maybe the cpu gets a little bit hotter, and the fans are cyclones, so yeah, U HAVE TO play with headphones!

    Tiago,

The Aura Core software is not even in the esupport folder on my new GL503VM!! According to the FileList.txt, it's supposed to be there in a file called Aura core UWP\V2.0.5.0\V2.0.5.0_beta.zip. But it's not there.

Anyone have a link to the zip archive so we can have it stored?

Luckily, it is available from here to install:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/rog-aura-core/9pg5q8nsf0zc

Please email Asus and see if you can get the correct install archive, and if so please share the file with us. Asus needs to add it for download in case any of us wish to clean install Windows.

I had the same issue with my GL703VM which I just sent in for return. The ROG Aura core from microsoft store only allows you to change the brightness of the keyboard and that's it. For those buying the laptop, DO not wipe the stock HDD yet.

Good morning Chocolate ! how are you !
I also bought a GL503VM (Hero Edition) Haven't had a lot of time to play with it a lot though.
I did notice I don't have Gsync on my Nvidia control panel (did notice invoice mentions it has G-Sync) , can you please tell me if the monitor drivers are the pnp generic monitor ?

Can you please tell me your BIOS version? I noticed ASUS has a new new ROM on their drivers page. (I know there may be another part of the forum for this question, however [question for everyone], having such a new laptop, would you guys recommend to flash it to this new ROM ?)
Can you please tell me the reference number the laptop box has?

    Thank you !

I wrote Asus about the Aura Core software and here is what they said:

"I am sorry that you are having issues getting a copy of the Aura software. I will be more than happy to assist you in resolving this.

We regret to inform you that providing a link for the Aura software program is currently not possible duet the utility not being available on our support site."

Not useful at all and rather disappointing. So, basically, we cannot clean install these notebooks yet without losing some functionality. And there is no good reason for it except someone at Asus forgot to upload the correct build of Aura Core or even include the archive on the factory install image. For all we know they lost it. :-/

My BIOS is 302. Note, there may be a different BIOS depending on your model, i.e. last letters of the model are VD, VM, or VMF. Mine is a GL503VMF. You can pick from the dropdown menu here.

Gsync -- yes, I definitely have gsync in my Nvidia panel, and it works well.

My monitor is listed as using generic pnp driver.

For flashing the BIOS, I would recommend using the Asus Live Update app, which automatically found and started the latest BIOS update for me when I first used this laptop. Note that not all GL503's use the same BIOS -- for example I saw a 306 BIOS on the support page but my model does not use that BIOS. For my computer, the latest BIOS is 302. At first I thought the 306 BIOS was the latest, but I learned that each GL503 model has different ones,

The model # of this computer is GL503VM-B17N13, which I believe is made specifically for sale at Best Buy stores here in USA. But, it is a VMF model on the Asus support pages. You have a fancier version, the Hero edition, so it's probably a little different.

    Good luck with everything.

Just want to point out that I continue to have sleep issues with this GL503VMF. Sometimes it will not wake up properly, and Asus support was no help.

Probably needs a BIOS update to fix. *sigh*

Also, about the soft touch black rubberized material on the Bestbuy version that I own: it gets smeary looking pretty easily. Be CAREFUL not to be tempted to clean it too much. I used a soft microfiber cloth on the left side and must've wiped too much too hard, and have slightly worn the finish there a bit. It's only visible in direct light so I can live with it. Hard lesson learned. I would probably not buy a notebook with this sort of material again, but it does feel nice at least.

As far as I know, the GL503VM-DB74, GL703VM-WB71, andd GL703VM-DB74 does not have G-Sync nor do they have Nvidia Optimus. Funny thing is that ASUS post the Intel HD VGA drivers on their website for these models.. so one would assume the laptop comes with Nvidia Optimus.

Can you post the screen model of the laptop you just bought using hardware info?
I am just curious on what screen it has.

Also can you post some temperature readings during stress test and during gaming and see if you notice any thermal throttling?

And how is your battery life on the laptop? Curious to see its battery life results versus the BestBuy G-Sync edition from chocolatecake.

For an SSD upgrade, the one you picked is an M.2 SATA ssd. I would go with an M.2 NVME SSD and choose a lower capacity HDD.

If you want to stick with WD ( Western Digital), then go for something like this
    https://www.amazon.com/Black-256GB-Performance-SSD-WDS256G1X0C/dp/B01MR4VOBZ/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512019891&sr=1-5&keywords=m.2+nvme+ssd&th=1

Typically Samsung makes pretty good ssd so you could go for the samsung 960 EVO , or 960 pro or even the last gen 950 pro.

The M.2 Slot in your system will be compatible with any m.2 sata, or m.2 nvme ssd I believe.

    Hey guys,

I've got some questions about temperatures and fan noise.

I own a gl503vd (gtx1050) and I must say that fan speeds are sometimes ridiculous (they usually spin around 1,7k but every few minutes they reach ~3k in idle.....) Also when I run games both fans spin with exacly the same speed even though only the processor gets hot and gpu is like 50cels. And the last thing - after doing clean Windows install I cannot see fan speeds (well i can see them in BIOS), I believe I have installed every single driver and software from their website so I have no idea what im missin :<

    Cheers

    That's good news.

Can someone explain Overboost to me?

This is my first ROG laptop. There are 2 settings for the fan in the Gaming Center: Auto, and Overboost. But I don't notice anything different. I am guessing Overboost makes the fan rotate at higher RPM, but I can't tell what's happening.

So, what are your temps like?

Mine idles at 42c in a 22c (72F) room at the Win10 desktop. With mild use, it will stay maybe around 50c.

I just ran some stress tests. Used Furmark 1.19.1.0, and simultaneously ran the CPU 8 thread bench and the GPU 1080p 4XMSAA bench at the same time, while monitoring temps for CPU and GPU for about 15 minutes. (Also, here are the results of just the 1080p bench alone.) These 2 benches seem to completely max out both the CPU and GPU, so I figured that would be a good way to really see what temps this computer can handle.

CPU stayed around 94c and GPU stayed around 76c.

From what I've read, those are both within safe ranges, i.e. 7700HQ should stay under 100c, and 1060 should stay under 84c.

Still not sure what difference Overboost makes, if any. Don't see an RPM monitor app on this laptop, except in the BIOS. Don't hear any difference between Auto and Overboost.

I might consider new thermal paste someday soon to get better temps. Thoughts?

When I tested the GL703VM using FURMARK + PRIME95, Ive seen the GPU hit 90-92 temps and CPU hitting 80s. THis is with thermal paste applied from HIDevolution. Overboost does help in my opinion. You do hear the fan run "louder" with overboost in my opinion.

Try running a game with just fan in overboost mode for say 2 hours and do the same test after giving the laptop a break and compare the two.

Overboost is in fact to let the Fans rotate at higher rpm. I suggest to let it in turboboost all the time, since it doesn't really make any difference in noise and, if you do a test, first see your temps with overboost, then without it, you will notice a slight difference.

I have undervolted both the CPU and GPU, and my CPU stays at around 88C with some spikes to around 92C, and the GPU stays around 72C, this with overboost. I don't really like the temps on the CPU, But I don't want to void my warranty to apply thermal paste just yet...

dbzx and Tiago, thank you. Good replies and info.

I think I will be keeping this laptop. I like a lot of things about it, and its shortcomings are not too bad. Nothing is perfect, and I don't really want to spend more than what I paid for this. The 120Hz + Gsync display is especially nice to have. So, anyone curious about the Bestbuy $1300 model, I say give it a shot if you like its spec.

Can anyone who owns the GL503VS-DH74 (144hz screen, not VM, etc) comment on the screen quality (brightness, contrast, uniformity, etc)? So far in the few reviews that are out, this version's screen looks kinda washed out / low contrast. Wanted to get some more in the field reports before making a purchase.

Just got my GL503VS from XoticPC. But the Rog Control Center button at the top next to the sound control doesn't do anything. Do I need to enable anything?

Just checked under the Asus folder and it doesn't have the control center listed but I see the Aura Core folder. Going to check Asus website.

You hold F2, then press the power button while still holding the F2 until you see the BIOS screen. But I went in and saw no settings for fan speed.

I couldn't find any software or BIOS setting to adjust the fan speed. However I undervolted the CPU by -0.060 V and the CPU Fan is sitting around 2200 RPM at idle and up to 2400 RPM when clicking around and light web browsing. Seems to be much quieter.

I just got a GL503VS yesterday. I played Destiny 2 for about 4 hours on it to "break it in" regarding the screen quality. Colors are great like an IPS should be (I'm coming from a Thinkpad X230 which had a great IPS screen option), the blacks though as with many IPS is where this screen has some issues. There's some acceptable backlight bleeding on the 4 corners, it's not the worst I've seen through the years though, but it's there. This is with the screen in max brightness in a pitch black room. I found that adjusting the screen to about 60% brightness helps a lot and 60% brightness is still bright enough for use in a well lit room.

Now, to be honest if you're looking for excellent blacks, etc. None of the LCD screens can compare to an OLED, so search elsewhere. Where this laptop shines is for fast movement FPS gaming. I'm happy to report that the 144Hz is very very good. I can see a difference between playing on this 144Hz IPS vs. my 240Hz Alienware TN screen that I own on my desktop, but it's still a huge difference from any 60Hz screen. The difference is apparent when you whip around 180 degrees rapidly with your mouse. The trailing is more on this laptop screen vs. my desktop one.

That's all I can say about the screen so far...

Build quality is solid and during the 4 hours of playing I had no thermal throttling, graphics stuttering, etc. Of course I had to reduce settings vs. my desktop computer which is running dual GTX1080 cards in SLI, but on a 15" laptop I can say I'm quite happy with the performance. I'm sure you all know this, but with all the "Max Q" stuff out there I got paranoid and installed GPUz just to make sure that this is indeed a legit GTX 1070 mobile chip and it is.

Web browsing and watching some youtube videos, the laptop was silent and snappy too. However, during gaming this machine sounds like an jet plane. I guess that's the price to pay for having no throttling, etc. it doesn't bother me because I'm on headphones, but I didn't test it out with voice chat yet. (Will probably squad up tonight with friends... If my friends ask me why I'm gaming on an aircraft runway I'll let you guys know.)

I'm pretty happy with it gaming wise. My concern is that I hope that the machine is durable and the fans can play like this for the long term without dying. XD

I just received my GL503VM hero edition, so far battery life is better than the 703VM that I returned. Unfortunately the laptop does not have the eSupport folder. However, I was able to extract the folder from a Bestbuy unit. If anyone needs it, I will upload it to mediafire or something.

    EDIT:

Just did a quick benchmark test for about 10 mins to test the temps after undervolting CPU and GPU for about 10 mins use Furmark + Prime95 with fan overboost

    GPU: 73 C
    CPU : 92 C

First impression of the screen I was pretty surprised how good it was. But I am coming from a 2013 Razer Blade 13 laptop which had probably one of the worst screens ever on a laptop. This screen is much better in every way. There's some very soft back light bleed at the top left and right bottom corner which I didn't notice until you mentioned and did a full black screen in a completely dark room. Can't tell in regular use moving the black window around. Smooth gaming in CS GO and Witcher 3 so far.

I probably won't have a 4 hour session tonight, but will later this week. Going to install hwmonitor and reply with results then. I did take a look at Asus ROG tool and temps looked fine. (Forgot what actual numbers were.) Granted Destiny 2 isn't very CPU intensive. The GPU is being stressed though. ;)

Alright. I had a good 4 hour run with the GL503VS yesterday. With HWmonitor I did see the laptop reaching 99 degrees on both CPU and GPU yesterday on Destiny 2. Also, the game did drop down to about 50fps from the usual 90-120fps that I was getting before which means that this laptop does throttle. I didn't try undervolting it yet, etc. I will probably try that tonight. Elevating the underside a bit to give it more fresh air doesn't really help, because there's a vent for fresh air on top of the laptop as well.

I pressed the ROG button and opened the fan control app (forgot what it's called) and turned the fans up all the way. It did reduce the throttling a lot and I got around 60-70 FPS for my lowest FPS dips.

All in all this is a good laptop, but it leaves me wondering if I should just send it back and get an Alienware 15 or 17. Kind of a shame because from what I've read they've made vast improvements over the GL502 with this.

I have an AW17 R4 with similar specs (7820HK CPU though) on order and will see if the same kind of gaming produces the same issues throttling, etc. before making my decision on returning the Asus, etc.
