When i saw the manual guides for GL502 series, i think this series have more easy way to open the backplate than G501, its just have to unscrew 10 pieces of screws instead of must get rid off 2 rubber feet to unveil 2 hidden screws in G501 series

    Hi...
I'm planning to buy this notebook because of PCIe SSD support that's stated on asus's website
    I'm a bit confused about 1 thing..
does GL502 support PCIe SSD ?
Because when I see it on asus website, it said that it does support PCIe SSD. But when I see it on hidevolution, they only support M.2 SATA.

    Thank you very much

Well it doesn't come down to either PCIe or M.2. The PCIe is a bus standard. The M.2 interface is simply a form factor of PCIe, meaning that if the device (e.g. an SSD) is using M.2, then this device's connector will look like this:
Otherwise, if a device is not using the M.2 form factor, then the connector on the PCIe device is most likely going to look like the connector of a graphics card, for example.
Therefore in conclusion: the laptop supports PCIe SSD drives that use the M.2 form factor.

Glad to see it available in the UK! You were right, however, about the price. It seems like it got raised quite a bit in the UK.. Not sure how trustworthy this HiDevolution is though.. Also, I was under the impression that the laptop supports up to 16GB of RAM, yet they seem to be selling 24 GB variants as well.

The seller seems trustworthy enough based on feedbacks and since they're listed under Amazon. The 24GB variants do seem a bit fishy because as you said, according to Asus this laptop supports only up to 16GB, and I can't seem to find any single 24GB DDR4 sticks online. It's either 16 or 32. Another thing is I'm not aware that G-Sync is available for the FHD panel, I assume it's for the 4k panel? Does your laptop come with G-Sync?

Other than that their price seems fair because of the taxes here. I'm eyeing the 970M model with 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD, but I'll wait for the 980M models to release and decide according to price.

[EDIT] I think I figure out why they list 24GB after checking the detailed spec list on their listing.

It seems this laptop comes with built in 8GB RAM, and a single slot for expansion. So it makes sense if adding a 16GB will make it 24GB. But there's still the limitation of 16GB by Asus....

    I see..
Thank you for the kind explanation :D
Seems like I can use samsung 950 for this laptop to improve the performance :D
Can't wait to buy this laptop :D

    Oh and 1 more question.
Is it true that the display use panel with 98% Adobe RGB ?
If it's true then this laptop is a really cheap laptop with performance :-O

If you're implying you would like to switch the laptop's SSD for the Samsung 950, then you should know that this laptop already comes with an NVMe Samsung 950 M.2. I ran a benchmark in Samsung Magician, resulting in around 2200mbps write speed and 1300mbps read speed.

As for the screen, I'm not quite sure. I do not have the necessary know how/tools to perform a proper display test like they use to do on notebookcheck for example. I also do not know how to verify that my display has GSYNC support. If anyone knows of some kind of software that would give me this information, please let me know.

There's two version of FHD screen for this laptop according to Asus, only one of them come with 98% Adobe RGB.

You should be able to find options for G-Sync in the Nvidia driver options. Similar to this:

That's a pretty good price, for a 512GB SSD version. Although it seems like they didn't mention what kind of SSD it contains, so it might not be the Samsung 950 NVMe M.2 one. You could add some HDD as well, once you receive, so you get some space for your games.

    Hope you enjoy it!

Yeah, the only thing I found is by finding out using the entire model number "
    ASUS G502VT-FY083T"

And I found the same model number on a popular french distributor (well known for being pretty accurate) and the data told me
    M.2 (Socket 3) - Mode PCI-E

    http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00207698.html

I'll see it tomorrow and make you some in-situation pictures if needed

Ok guys, here is two rapid video I made for you.
You'll see the unbox and first boot.

And before watching it, I have no longer the PC, let me explain.
As you'll see in the second video, after booting, the bottom screen backlight had serious problem, and I found that the screen lid was badly "glued" to the top cover, and the backlight was completely damaged.

I just return the laptop, and they'll send me another unit. That's not good for a high priced laptop but ...i'll see the next unit to make an opinion.

    For what I've seen :
This particular reference correspond at the Samsung PCI-E 512GB SSD (saw it in the manager)
The laptop and general build quality is gorgeous, I also have a 2014 retina macbook pro for work, and this gaming baby has nothing to be shy.

NB: Sorry for my english, as you'll notice I'm french. And sorry for the bad quality of my videos,YouTube doesn't let me upload MP4 @4K ... hope it'll help you. If I receive the new unit before you guys, let me know what you wanna know and I'll make more videos (hope it will come next week)

I picked up the Best Buy model of this laptop, here is the link :
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...plastic-/5090905.p?id=bb5090905&skuId=5090905

After opening it up...it has 8GB Ram soldered to the MB and one memory slot (I put a 16GB DDR4 chip in there for 24GB total). On the drive front it comes with a slow 5400rpm HD, it also has an open M.2 slot, I put the Samsung NVME drive into the slot and it was recognized by the bios, I removed the old HD and replaced with another SSD, clean install of Windows on the NVME drive and the laptop is running great, boots fast and stable.
I am going to install games and software this weekend and will see how it is for playing Doom.

Hey, I found this forum and I thought I would share my opinion on this computer. I received mine yesterday (ordered on http://www.fnac.com/PC-Portable-Asus-ROG-G502VT-FY083T-15-6/a9518014/w-4 )
It boot really fast and everything seems to be in place, samsung SSD, intel dual band and not atheros thing. I'm going to try some game and get back here, but for now it look awesome and is really quiet.

What WiFi card does the BB model have? How is the screen on it?
Besides not having a TB3 port and the lame RED colored WASD keyboard ( really ASUS you think us gamers don't know we're they are! Just my opinion and personal preference but it looks stupid and out of place) this would be very hard to pass up.
Overall it seems like a great choice for those that want a relatively affordable pick up the same day laptop.
    @dotlolz or @corteen
Can any of you guys do a video of the fan noise under load/gaming? Temps?
I realize thinner laptops run a bit hotter and louder but they can be managed if ASUS engineers did there homework and put some effort into it.

    Hey guys!

Hope the ones that bought their GL502s are enjoying them.
I'm looking to buy one from hidevolution.com as it's 1699 usd for the gtx 980m version over there!

Just a question.. how is the color accuracy on the panel? I'm resigning from my current job as a graphics designer which leaves me without the company macbook which makes it difficult to work outside or meet with freelance clients. I figured i'd rather sell my gaming rig at home and buy this instead of buying a new macbook.
@dotlolz you mentioned you had a macbook 2014, how does the color on the panel compare to it? I'm assuming that you have the 74% ntsc version right?

Also some reviews on Bestbuy have said that the panel is washed out which worries me :(

    Your help would be appreciated!

The BestBuy model has the Intel wireless card, I am getting decent connectivity and no loss of signal.
I haven't had chance to run any tests but the one stint of gaming I did playing Doom, showed it to be a fast and responsive machine, settings on high didn't cause the fans to get too loud.
I think the comments on the screen come from it being a Matt screen rather than the usual, I find the color and screen to be fine.

Can you try a few things for me? Will you go to GPU-Z and try and save the vBIOS and see if it lets you? I want to know if the vBIOS is embedded in the system BIOS or if its a stand alone chip. This makes a huge difference for overclocking potential.

Can you go to the Nvidia Control Panel and take a screen shot for me? Can this laptop use discrete only gpu mode AKA it doesn't use Optimus? Do you have G-Sync on the best buy model? Can the screen be overclocked at all?

    Thanks.

It's good to see more owners in the thread now.

I suggest everyone to do a real life battery test and report back. I'm more interested in casual usage with the iGPU, since I would expect most people to game while the laptop is powered from the wall. Hopefully it's possible to hit 5 hours battery life on 50% brightness, this would be good enough for me.

    Fun fact:

The GTX980M version is slightly thicker according to Asus. Maybe it will have better cooling to cope with the beefier GPU

    39.0 x 26.6 x 2.35 cm (GL502VT) (GTX970M)

    39.0 x 26.6 x 3.01 cm (GL502VY) (GTX980M)

Bought the strix from best buy yesterday. Looking for work laptop, quad core 32gb ram and 3tb of ssd space very apealing. Was going to get the xps 15, but it's double the cost.

My impressions on this as a work laptop, build quality low end, yet, it doesn't feel cheap or like it would break. But this laptop has orange and bright lights everywhere. Very much unlike the g501 from last year.

Sadly I have to return it, as work will not permit me to use something so flashy.

But as a cheap gaming laptop, with 970m, it's a really good deal. Sadly I have an Alienware 17 r3 for gaming already, but is definitely recommend this to anyone on limited budget looking for a gaming laptop. Even over the dell inspirion

Noone's gonna care, you might get some compliments when they notice it - don't advertise it, just set it up and get to work.

Throw some papers on the keyboard while you work on other keyboards to hide the flash if you like, but really don't sweat it.

If someone says something complimentary, then accept it - smile - yeah, it's cool - then change the subject to work stuff if you feel a lull.

If someone say's hey look at those orange keys, or nice lights, or some other wise crack, say "you never seen a laptop before?" - smile, and change the subject to work.

And, dont' forget to ask the manager the day before if you can bring in a personal laptop to work to keep up with personal email - and point out you won't plug in to the work network - that you will tether with your phone/hotspot. I wouldn't use the work guest network...

It's nice to have something from home at work :)

And, sell the AW while you can recover value from it, they aren't holding value like they used to when they were great laptops. They are becoming the same as mainstream.

Did BestBuy have the Strix 980m in stock where you are too? Or just the 970m?

Maybe pull back a bit from the accusations, and let him explain. :)

The laptop has 2 DDR4 memory slots, which can hold 2 x 16GB or 32 GB

@dblkk didn't get it stock with 32GB and 3TB storage, he was pointing out it can be configured that way, 1TB M.2 and 2TB (or larger!) 2.5" SSD. Doable :)

Not exactly. The laptop comes with 8GB of built in, on-board RAM. Furthermore, it contains one SO-DIMM RAM expanstion slot. So unless the person in question managed to find a 24GB SO-DIMM RAM stick, which is rather doubtful, they're full of sh1t.

You are outsmarting yourself (again?), don't jump to conclusions till you put yourself in the other persons POV.

Again, he didn't say 32GB/3TB was the configuration he bought, he said he was looking for a solution that provided that potential "Looking for work laptop, quad core 32gb ram and 3tb of ssd space very apealing."

If he only read the BestBuy site for his specifications info, he would think it would hold 2 x 16GB:

    Number Of Memory Slots 2

Going to the Asus site it has the real configuration specifications:
    https://www.asus.com/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-GL502VT/specifications/

    8 GB DDR4 2133MHz SDRAM Onboard Memory, 1 x SO-DIMM socket , up to 16GB SDRAM

He purchased at BestBuy, cut him some slack in his dream config hopes :)

You aren't going to make any friends lashing out and making unfound accusations.

Read for comprehension not for accusation o_O

Your correct, I was looking for that configuration, which would be possible with the dell xps 15.
8gb soldered, 16gb in slot and I'd have 24gb, which would still be fine for multiple vms and video editing.
M.2 would allow a Intel 1tb ssd, and I have a 850 Evo 2tb already, which would be 3tb ssd storage.
I'm a process control engineer, and spend 1/2 my work in office and 1/2 at customer sites. Hiding the orange wouldn't be possible.
I never slammed the notebook at all. If you owned it you would have to agree the build quality isn't top notch. It is perfectly acceptable, and feels pretty solid with minor flex everywhere but minor. But for $1100 and with a 970m, I mean it's a great solid value.
Selling my Alienware would only net me buying a $3000 dell precision 17". I need the screen size and the 4k screen uses is excelent and beyond words. It is well built with no notice flex, and sleek looking. With all flashy lights and gamer centric appeal 100% able to disable. 6 hrs of normal battery usage. It's rather large and heavy for out in the field plugged into plc or dcs network cabinets.

I do also appologize for attempting to bring light anything regarding this very new laptop with almost no reviews. But will make sure to jump to drastic conclusions from now on without ever thinking first.

There was nothing wrong with your posts, opinions, conclusions, etc :)

Thanks for sharing and please do so again. I make mistakes in posts too, and use the post Edit option frequently - to improve my post for the benefit of the reader, which is why we are all sharing here in the first place.

Too bad about the client problem keeping you from keeping the laptop.

It's really the same with products all over these days. My favorite running shoes went through a season of hideous colors that I wouldn't be caught dead in, but they cleaned up their act and took it back to their roots, got the black, blue, and silver ones again, thanks Asics :)

I really don't think clients are going to care one iota, but if it makes you self-conscious, that's another thing altogether. :)

Owners may I have some answers to my questions?

Do all models have the G-sync ?

Are the screens overclock able via the Nvidia control panel if not g-sync or does this laptop use craptastic Optimus with Intel controlling the game?

Is the vBIOS able to be extracted via GPU-Z save vbios feature?

Can I get some feedback thanks.

G-sync isn't mentioned in the Overview or Specs sections of the BestBuy or Asus sites for the internal display, so that would seem to be a solid No for having G-sync Display.

I don't really care about the colors I actually think the orange (minus on the lid) is pretty sweet. But my owners have strict rules on 'professional' laptops and atire.

Although not great, the g502 would've been perfectly adequate and $1000 less than the xps I ended up with. Granted the g502 would've needed a few upgrades (ram/ssd) but still a great 15 inch laptop option.

Speaking of brands and great to wth, I really liked the Asus rog 17 back when it was the black stealth look, all this silver and gold I'm not sure what's going on there.

I bought mine today from Best Buy for $1199 and change. Just for all of you out there, i was able to locate the Asus GL502VT Strix at Best Buy, Amazon, B&H Photo Video, ExCaliberPC, etc. Unfortunately i bought it while i was at lunch and haven't had time to actually turn it on or any of that, however, will follow up at some point later with that information if i can remember. One thing to note, by buying your laptop from one of these retailers you're basically conceding to the specs they are selling.

The version i bought is as follows:
    i7-6700HQ (standard across all configs)
12GB DDR4 RAM (note - 4 GB less than most other versions) - 12GB is more than sufficient for gaming and really any other task out there, unless you're doing work with Virtual Machines or some pretty wicked CAD stuff. So yeah, 12 GB is fine.
GTX 970m 3GB (again, not the 6GB, but it will be just fine)
FHD IPS panel (1920x1080) - i'm assuming this is the 72% NTSC version, but seeing as there seems to be no control over which FHD panel you get, what can you do
1 TB HDD - hoping this is the 7200 RPM drive, but again, if it's the 5400 RPM, what can you do.

I went to Fry's and bought the Samsung 950 NVMe PCIe SSD (256) for 179.00, i'll install that myself after i've backed up win 10, then re-install the OS onto that drive.
Also, based on the wifi complaints earlier in this thread, IF the existing wifi card in my PC is the Atheros version i'll be replacing that with an Intel 8260 dual-band 802.11ac card (or one that will fit into the slot)

Now to answer your question, @mikroLED, there are two possible FHD panels the GL502VT can come with, one has higher color specs than the other from what i can tell (based on the web site's specs):
    15.6" (16:9) LED backlit UHD (3840x2160) Anit-Glaire Panel with 72% NTSC
    15.6" (16:9) LED backlit FHD (1920x1080) Anit-Glaire Panel with 72% NTSC
    15.6" (16:9) LED backlit FHD (1920x1080) Anit-Glaire Panel with 94% NTSC
    Support ASUS Splendid Technology
    With IPS Technology

Not available from any retailers i've seen yet. I did see on ExcaliberPC's website they have that model available for pre-order, however, no option on configuration of the screen to get the 4k panel, so... :(

Careful here, not entirely true. While Thunderbolt 3 is used via USB-C, this laptop does not support Thunderbolt 3. If you plug in a thunderbolt 3 compatible device i'm fairly certain it won't work.

This laptop is so great, Ive been waiting for a good laptop design capable of gaming. This is a good combination of 970m and a form factor of ASUS.
However a lot of issues are coming up like
    - Wifi issues (some are Atheros),
    - no G-sync (tolerable as of now)
    - poor screen (based on bestbuy reviews)
    - no Thunderbolt but with USB Type C at 10Gbps
But still Im looking forward to buying this monster laptop
Can you recommend a good deal

    1. From bestbuy but with poor screen and poor HDD 1 TB 5400 RPM 12 GB RAN only
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...plastic-/5090905.p?id=bb5090905&skuId=5090905

    or this one

    2. From Amazon - still no reviews about the screen 1TB 7200 with 16GB RAM with Freebies P($190 value): "Tom Clancy's The Division (2016)" Game Coupon + ASUS ROG GX860 Buzzard Gaming Mouse + ASUS ROG GM50 Gaming Mouse Pad.
    http://www.amazon.com/GL502VT-DS71-...rue&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

If only we can find what asus advertised to be 15.6" (16:9) LED backlit FHD (1920x1080) Anit-Glaire Panel with 94% NTSC.......of course at an affordable price (<1500$)

I got a Gigabyte P34W V5 coming in tomorrow. If it's too loud and generates a ton of throttling issues this will most likely be my next purchase.

I wish the usb type c port would have been thunderbolt too.

As of this moment, there is little use for USB c for file / data transfer. But I use thunderbolt for running all my external displays. But, that is also because that laptop doesn't have mini display port, so usbc/thunderbolt port is my only optiom.

According to GL502VT asus official website and manual, GL502 series has a mini Display port

To be honest, I cannot see much use for a TB3 port on a laptop equipped with a 970M/980M either. Would've been a nice addition, sure, but it not being there is in my opinion just not that worrying as some people believe it to be. TB3 devices are currently still in their early days and from what I've seen, the major use for the TB3 interface at this point are external graphic cards. But then again, why would you need those when you got one of the mentioned mGPUs under the hood? Another thing might be the external display(s) connectivity, as you've mentioned, which can however be solved with the mini DisplayPort, or the HDMI 2.0 available. I've also read that USB 3.1 Type-C alone, can be used to connect the laptop to an external display, without needing the thunderbolt interface. I guess that's why these exist: http://www.j5create.com/our-products/usb-type-c-adapter/jca141.html).

As for the crappy Atheros adapters, I was under the impression that they were only installed in devices shipped to the Czech/Slovakian market. If someone is from outside of this region and got a laptop with this adapter, please let us know.

I'm not so sure about the screen issues. I consider the quality of the image, the contrast, the brightness and the colors more than satisfactory, I haven't noticed anything annoying or wrong with it. That is of course just my subjective opinion, and we're going to have to wait for a professional review to get some objective evaluation. Perhaps the people who were complaining about the display received faulty models with screens improperly glued to the frame, causing backlight bleeding?

Can you provide us here with the lcd panel name of your GL502VT if the laptop provide the name in MS Info?
I really, really curious what type of panel they use in this GL502VT.
