My trusty W90 broke down some time ago after almost a year of solid performance. In the middle of a gaming session it just shut down, and I haven't been able to start it since.

After trying to figure out the problem myself, I sent it to Asus for repair. Now it's been there almost a month, and they've replaced both the motherboard and the CPU. They're waiting on a replacement GPU to finish repairs, but after talking to a representative it seems they are unsure whether a replacement GPU will ever be delivered.

So they said there's a possibility I might be offered another laptop instead. It won't be a W90 though, since those aren't manufactured anymore, but does Asus manufacture any gaming laptops with similar, or better, performance?

The latest G73 should surpass the W90 in terms of performance. Ask them for that and no less. Equipped with i7 and 5870.

It seems to me like the GPU's on your W90 died. I hope they find replacements. It is sad how quickly asus drop their more exciting laptop models. Same thing occurred with the C90 and with it both customer service and support go out of the window too. Good job you still got warranty :D

Its graphics card may not be as powerful as your W90's SLI, but this will be THE sexiest computer you'll ever see. Besides, at $2200 it's a better "freebie" than the $1600 G73, which has rampant GSOD issues that you'll have to live with.

That seems likely, but why they died is a mystery to me. I've never had heat problems with my W90, unlike my old laptop that regularly went up to 90 degrees, my W90 rarely went above 50 measured with speedfan.

I've looked at quite a few reviews of the G73 and it undoubtedly seems like an impressive machine. It seems to me though that it doesn't really surpass the W90? It's got a better CPU, but the 2x HD 4870 are better then one 5870 for gaming, it has no RAID support, smaller screen etc.

I read a review by someone called ViciousXUSMC on this forum and he wrote that the G73 is a "mini-beast" compared to his old W90, "the beast", that is the feeling I'm getting, I would be trading a monster laptop for a slightly less powerful one.

But maybe if I trade it for the latest G73JH with the Core i7 820QM and BD drive, the advantages will make up for it? If not I'm thinking about asking for both a G73JH and a smaller laptop (like an EEEPC) or some peripherals to make up for the difference, but I'm not sure how they will respond to that.

It looks like a sexy computer no doubt, but it does not really seem like a gaming laptop, which is what I'm looking for. It doesn't seem mobile. Arguably the W90 wasn't very mobile either but at least you could fit it into a bag and carry it around. The idea would then be to ask for one, sell it, buy a gaming laptop and pocket the difference. Not sure there would be much difference, and I'm not sure they offer the NX90JQ in my country either.

Also are these GSOD issues something a lot of users have been complaining about? I know there were a lot of complaints about the W90 too but aside from the very spotty drive support for the GPU's, the laptop worked fine for me. Until it broke down, at least.

I should add I got the W90 supercheap so I won't be losing any money if I trade it for a G73JH (which I believe is cheaper then the W90?), but I'm still concerned about loosing performance.

I thought I read somewhere that the 4870's used in the W90 were not quite "true" 4870s and that they were closer to the 4850? If this is correct the G73 with its 5870 OCed to the max should outperform the W90 however this is a very close run thing. The dual GPU's in your W90 are very hard to beat. Possibly the 820QM would put the G73 first though as i7's really do perform well in games.

nVidia GT 335M GDDR3 1024MB and 5400rpm HDDs are not really gaming worthy.

This appears to be more of a multimedia laptop than a gaming laptop.

Performance-wise the G73 is pretty much the only thing Asus currently have that can stand up to your W90
