I sent my computer in twice in the last 3 weeks to fix the trackpad issue (jumping all over the place, acting like multiple fingers are on it, etc). I've gotten it back both times, marked as 'fixed' and 'reproduced' with the trackpad replaced both times. Both times, it has come back with the same issue.

Any suggestions? I don't want to keep sending it in if they really can't fix it. Should I attempt the tape fix? I had heard that wasn't a permanent solution.

    What should I do?

Why do I suspect they change the pad, and put the tape back in the same place they found it?

Thanks for the links all. I have tried the trackpad fix linked by 9800xpv without success. I had read about the wedge fix before, but as it says in the link I had heard it was not permanent.

Sounds like the only solution is to disassemble this beast and pull that tape off myself, huh? Is that known to be a permanent fix?

Brazzle: did you RMA it with Asus or with your retailer? If with Asus, then PM me your Serial Number so I can look at your acct, and if you want I can have it RMA to me and I can have it done personally. I can email/PM you the details and get some shipping labels sent out.

Tape fix / wedge fix have not worked for me. Nothing has. Send it in to Chastity though, she won't let it come back to you unless it's working.

Please could you explain exactly what I need to do to the touchpad.

Im lapping my sinks tonight so will get this done while she is open. Mine gets stuck all the bloody time and I have removed the yellow plastic stickers but not the metal coloured ones and the metal film sheet.

    Thanks

I removed the metal film sheet and tape, and the touchpad is worlds better than before. It's still imperfect, but generally the issue occurs much less frequently. I suspect the issue is due to the palm wrest flexing parts of the touchpad causing it to bug out or due to heat from the palm registering in the touchpad somehow since it gets messed up most frequently right after I type something. I do have it where it's relatively livable though, and it doesn't lose its mind nearly as often as it did when I first got the laptop.

I'd definitely encourage removing the silver foil cover though since it really isn't actually doing anything, and the fact that it's contacting the underside of the touchpad could be related to the issue.

As I mentioned, I've removed mine and things are far better than they used to be.

I've also moved to the latest Synaptics drivers and am using the momentum and 2 finger scroll options in the drivers. I find the touchpad to be very usable now.

In the past I would frequently have cases where the touchpad would register all my touches on the left or right edges and I suspect this could be due to the foil somehow making the touchpad think there was contact on the edges.

I still have times where my windows zoom and font sizes change on me, but as I said, it's most often when my hands are typing and practically resting on the edge of the touchpad surface.

Now, generally if I just wait or switch to my external mouse for a few seconds the touchpad will come back and start working just fine again.

This is why I suspect heat might have something to do with it. In any case, I have found as others have also stated that removing all of the crap minus the ribbon cable that connects the touchpad and buttons has majorly helped to make the pad work better.

Some people also added some electric insulation in the form of a wedge of cardboard/plastic between the TP and the rest of the notebook. My guess is that a static charge is building up due to the tape touching something and interfering with the readings on the TP.

I removed all the tape, the metal film, all of it. Then I took a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol and cleaned all the glue and residue. Has been 100% perfect here since.

When you were doing this, did you take apart the whole laptop or just the three screws on the back to just barely lift the front part of the laptop?

I went as far as taking off the LCD just to have full access to the palmrest. You don't need to take it apart completely to do it.
