Hello all, below is a description of my experience with Asus's service center. And how they deal with the Asus G1s Defective mobo (due to having the nvidia 8600m). as codehopper stated in another thread: "nvidia settled a class action for faulty 8600m chips. Here is the site The NVIDIA GPU Litigation - Home Page, BUT Asus is not on the list."

my question is why isn't asus on there??

so my experience is as follows:

i live in canada, my g1s was out of warranty. I called the service center to get it fixed on their dime, they said it was not their problem. ( i called twice and tried to talk to a manager, was told he was not in and that he would call back, he never did). I decided to send a registered letter with the intention to sue Asus for the defective Laptop that they manufactured. after mailing the letter, i got a call the next day saying that they would fix it for free. they would not budge about giving a replacement lappy or another type of mobo. they say it is a "redesigned" mobo and will work fine and that they used it in more than 1000 asus g1s laptops ( that maybe true but i would love to know how many end up failing within a few months). i just got it back on monday the 1st of November( i sent it in last week). i will run some tests. but i talked to someone with the same issue and the same replacement mobo, he claims it is way cooler and running fine 6 months in. hope this helps someone. i do not blame asus for the defect however i do blame them for the poor service in response to the problem. i hope someone does sue them.

I ran hwmonitor these are my ridiculous temps for the 8600m GPU:

    idle: 67C
just using IE (not even youtube, just the second i launch IE): 100C!
    running 3d mark once: 127C!!!!(update hit 147C!)

is this normal for any piece of hardware on earth? I doubt it. I called asus service center and told them about the temps, the guy made me restart and hit f8 then boot using "last good known configuration" and everything should be ok. what a bunch of. he said to call back if there are any issues. I was like NOTHING HAS CHANGED, HELLOOOO, same temps. And why the hell would last config make sense anyways? it was just recovered using the recovery partition. there is no last anything! complete BS and a waste of my time.

note that this is the stock driver on the OEM install that came with the laptop (win vista 32bit) way back when. should i update the driver and test again? i doubt the drive is the issue if the heat is that crazy.

if you are in the states you might be better off. some get replacement laptops.

Also, Asus has closed down the notebook forums! ?? no warning or announcements or anything. people have been emailing and complaining about it but no answer from asus. LINK

I would love for everyone here who has issues with Asus or the G1s to call them and send them emails to make it clear that we see what they are doing and it is not cool! i wanted to posed these issue on their forums but they took it down! i will be emailing and calling them and do my part.

I suggest that if you have a g1s whether it is working or not, under warranty or not, do the same thing, send a letter using registered mail. you should draft a good letter and address it to asus headquarters in cali. get the address from the asus website. send it by registered mail and quote the appropriate laws in your situation. (class action law suit, reference the nvidia case linked above, any consumer protection acts in your jurisdiction) You can send it to the asus service center in your country/city. just make sure you write in the subject head "Letter before action". the addresses are on Asus's website. Unfortunately, European customers have had less success than north Americans dealing with the g1s issue. There are a bunch of threads on this, check out this forum: Nvidia defect forum for more info.

I have been a hard core asus customer since i was in middle school. All my friends and family have purchased asus products due to my recommendations.
easily over 10 asus laptops in the past few years. But no more.

let me know what you guys think about the crazy temps ( in my opinion they are not normal even for the g1s). And what i should do about it. Should i pursue asus? ALso what is the best way to tackle the asus forums being shut down with no warning?

I have a G1s with the Nvidia defect GPU 8600m GT and I went after ASUS and finally got them to give me a replacement laptop. (G50V-X1). Most of my info is on the nvidiadefect.com forum.

The Nvidia Defect Forum • View topic - G1s failed 8600m gt replacement board

It also has a picture of the "new reworked gpu" however no one is coming forth to say what exactly was done to make this better.

Keep after them. Be patient, fare, and honest in pursuing them and you should get some satisfaction.

This was in the states. You need to check your consumer protection laws for canada and if they say the manufacture has a responsibilty to fix a defect then you need to after them with that statement. The nvidia defect forum has all the links to support your case when you go after them.

i did that already, all i got was fix (as i am not under warranty)

i just called them again and they said i could send it back to the technicians.

when they call me to tell me what is going on, i will refuse their service and will demand a replacement laptop. i think i will also post on the nvidia defect forum since this is not over.

if you know anything about normal temps for the g1s please let me know. i have only found one thread saying that it always tops off at 96C at full load (for me it is 127C)

    regards

Temps way to high. When you post in the nvidiadefect forum, Mr. Lapcure, a tech with his own repair company in England, also made this forum, will respond to your post and tell you the same.
I told them prove to me that this fix is ok. What did they do to the chip to make it better? Nobody can get an answer. I said then give me a 2 year warranty written on ASUS letterhead for this fix. They said no and I said I will see you in court. Every time I mentioned court action I got further along in the process. Do alot of research on the nvidiadefect forum. All of this on what I am talking about is there. My tale took 2 months before a conclusion.

what do you use to monitor the temp? im using hwmonitor (says 145C) gpu z says it is 107C. which is more accurate? what is considered normal for the g1s?

Here is Mr. Lapcure's download site to test your GPU.

The Nvidia Defect Forum • Login

I want to say mid 80's under load, but not sure. mr Lapcure could tell you for sure.

my g1s gpu was 60C at idle and high 80's under load and it still failed with the black/blank screen.

    hey,

today i called to check up on what was going on. I finally talked to a supervisor, i got his name and everything. after a lengthy conversation going back and forth. He agreed to send a request to get me a replacement notebook. He said it is not guaranteed though. I told him to go ahead and process it but i would not accept the G1s Back under any circumstances so the result better be a replacement notebook. he said they would get back to me within 48 hours if not i will call the supervisor back. the only thing i am worried about is if the service facility goes ahead and "repair" my g1s again and send it back to me before this happens. then it will further complicate things. Even though i sated not to repair it in documents i enclosed with the notebook. at least i am making progress. will keep all of you (really just cjfiii) updated :D

    regards

just got a call back from asus service facility in markham ontario. i told them not to fix it. they were like sure come pick it up then. they did not budge about the replacement laptop, said they were not authorized. He said Asus HQ in Cali will call me "soon". lets see where this goes. if no one gets back to, i will be sending another registered letter. that seems to be the only thing that gets their attention.
