    Hello,

I am currently attempting to revive my g50-vt that I bought in 2008. I currently do not know the location of the recovery discs to get the laptop to boot correctly. Currently my issue is that it says that it does not have a boot drive, and will not read the windows 7 disc I have inserted as a boot disc. This is even after having gone in to the bios and changing the boot priority to the dvd drive. Express gate is not working either, it says it is not installed.

Does anyone have an uploaded image of the recovery discs? It would be very helpful and would save me 50 bucks that if this does not work can be put towards the eventual purchase of a new laptop.

OR: If anyone has any other ideas on trying to get this thing to boot I would be more than willing to try them.

Thank you for reading, and Thank you even more for your help!

If the Win 7 disc is good (have you tried it in another computer?) then the DVD drive is likely toast. You should try installing through a USB thumb drive. But first, you say it doesn't have a boot drive; is the HDD/SSD seen by the BIOS?

I haven't used bios for a lot of things previously, how do I make sure that the HDD is seen by bios?

If you can't boot from anything, first do an EC reset by removing the AC adapter and battery for 30+ seconds and pressing the power button a few times. Then clear the CMOS; go into the BIOS and restore user defaults, save and exit.

The next step is to see if your drives are showing up at all. When you power on the machine hit ESC and you should be able to see the POST messages that list the hard drives. If not, you can go to the boot menu and select HDD (or BBS) priorities to see if your hard drive(s) are being seen. If there is a RAID array, to manage it you need to hit Ctrl + I after POST when it says intel raid.

There is no reason to buy recovery disks, you can download a windows iso image and use the license code on the bottom of your laptop, as long as it's the same version of windows. Then download drivers and utilities from ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download

If your DVD drive isn't working, you can use microsoft's USB creator tool to boot the windows installer from a USB drive.

You also don't need to keep changing the boot order, you can just hit ESC a few more times when you first power it on and get to the boot media menu.

the license code on the bottom of the laptop has worn off, the sticker is still there but the actual code is gone. Also, where might I download an ISO image of windows? I know that sounds dumb. However, I have not done that before. Also, I cannot find the usb creator tool, the search just leads to the Msoft store website.

Thank you for all of the help so far, I really appreciate it.

Also, If I recall correctly, I did do the hit escape portion earlier and it only brought up the disc drive.

I can't link you to either of those, unfortunately, you just need to search google a bit more. If you don't have a visible license code, though, you need to get your existing windows installation to boot so that you can use a utility like ABR to backup your license information to a USB drive so that you can save that license.

If your hard disk drives aren't showing up, you can try reseating them (after resetting the EC and bios defaults). To do that just take off the bottom panel and unplug the drives and put them back. If you've never done it before, it's really easy, see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...8551-asus-g50-notebook-disassembly-guide.html under CPU cover (it's a few screws and then the panel comes off, the hard drives are right on the outer edge).

Unfortunately, even after having tried both hard drive slots the hard drive is not recognized, which is more than unfortunate. I am think I need to at minimum get another hard drive. Anyone know a really cheap 2.5 sata drive? (like $30 and under, 50 at the very very most).

Alright, there has been a lot of progress and even mor frustration since the last update. I have put in a new old hard drive (200gb) and installed windows 7 ultimate 64. With some patience it booted up. However, several keys don't work, except some of them do work when shift is held down. I disabled the windows key which initially seems to be the problem. However, It was not. I ordered a new keyboard from eBay. I cannot get the old keyboard off despite having gotten at least 10 different sets of instructions.

    Any advice?

There are some metal tabs that you need to push down, and it can be tricky but it's doable as long as you don't get frustrated. Here are some instructions I wrote:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...rd-replacement-repair-manual.html#post6889173

The keyboard ribbon cable might just need to be reinserted, or the contacts at the end of the cable cleaned with some rubbing alcohol. Just be really careful with the black lock that slides on the connector because they are easy to break. Pushing either at each side with a fingernail is usually all it takes to get it loose. Don't use a screwdriver.

The trouble seem to be that the plastic that should be pushed up, to get the keyboard to release, might be broken. I don't know how to get around this.

In addition, this error seems to happen about 80% of the time, but there are some times when I boot it up that all of the keys seem to be working.

You sort of have to stick something like a guitar pick in there between the edge of the keyboard and the tab, and push towards the screen, so that the lip of the keyboard is coming up. If anything were broken, it would come right out.

For now, I have it up and running, I am actually posting this from it. However, I have noticed certain things that are non essential but would like to have work are not working. Such as the buttons just below the screen. I don't know how to describe them other than they are touch sensitive buttons, and one of which disables the touchpad. Also the little lcd to the left of them seems to not be working as well, I do not know whether I just did not get the driver for it while downloading drivers from asus or whether it is broken.

I went to Asus' website and downloaded all of the most recent drivers for everything, I think.

In short, THANK YOU! and I will update if I continue to have issues, though I very very much hope I will not

Make sure you have all of the ATK drivers installed, and for the OLED screen you need DirectConsole (it should be under utilities on the asus site).

upon closer inspection, I believe that the lcd is cracked. This is unfortunate, but it is not a necessary piece of hardware, so I probably will not bother installing a new one. :-/ . However I am going to have to purchase a replacement battery. Such is the life of electronics, it hadn't been used in 3 years. So the fact I have it up and running at all is just awesome!

That's too bad. If you're getting a replacement battery, know that there is a 9 cell option for the G50, I can dig up the asus part number if you want.

So, it has been running well for a while, and I got a replacement battery, unsurprisingly the replacement knockoff battery is not much better than the old almost useless one. However, now I have bumped into a very small issue, the asus page that would instruct me on how to find out what model of webcam is on my laptop is not in existance anymore. Any ideas?

Go to device manager and find its device ID.
