    Hello everybody..

I have bought a laptop ASUS g51j with the nvidia 260m card and was very very happy until one month ago that the laptop started to lag a lot in games that i was playing with no problem before and making them not possible to play.

The gpu is running 84 c idle and if i start to play it goes until 109 and stays there.I dont know how much it was before..One time i saw it was saying 123c but i think this could not be..

Do you think this causes the problem?I am in the last month of my warranty so if anybody could help it would be very nice

The laptop was always running hot but i think i feel a difference now.

    Please help..
I have already been in contact with Asus Germany and my reseller in Germany while i bought the laptop from there. They both offered me to send the laptop to them. Who should i sent it to? What is the best choice
    Thank you very much

    Peace and love

The first thing I would try is to take off the back plate and use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust that might have accumulated on the heat sink. If you do this, you're going to want to use a paper clip or some other object to prevent the fan over top of the CPU from spinning freely, since blowing air through it can spin the fan faster than it was intended to and damage it. I have to do this every two or three months on my G51, otherwise the temperatures reach similar levels to yours.

Thank you for the reply. I have already opened the back plate and used a can of compressed air that is normally used to clean the keyboard and was not very much left of it but the dust didnt go out it stayed in like it was stuck.

Do you think that this is really the problem also for the game lagging?

Did your laptop also perform bad at these temperatures?/

Well, when the CPU/GPU hits a certain temperature, it's going to automatically throttle back the clock speed to prevent permanent damage to the overheating component, so that would definitely explain why your games would start lagging when overheating.

When you look at the copper fins of the heat sink, do you see a film or any debris on the fins? I remember the first time I had problems similar to what you are experiencing, only a little puff of dust came out the grille on the side, but my idle CPU temps dropped from 65-69 with the fan running all the time to 55-60C with the fan off. My load GPU temps (don't remember idle sorry) went from running right into the thermal cutoff of 105c to around 85-90c.

If there isn't anything really on the heatsink fins preventing thermal conductivity then the issue might be the thermal paste applied to the contact surfaces for the CPU/GPU, but I would think that that problem would have manifested itself much earlier on than what you are currently dealing with.

I am sorry but i dont exactly understand what exactly you mean. Please explain me a little bit better my english is good but i would like to now exactly what you mean.
Should i upload a photo for you to see how it is inside? Or do you have one to explain to me?
What kind of can do you use?
I will do this tomorrow but i will open now the laptop for you if this helped because the whole thing is making me very nervous about my laptop...
    and thanks a lot...

Basically, any sort of dust, film, whatever on the fins of the heat sink will reduce its ability to conduct the heat from your CPU/GPU to the air. You mentioned before that the dust seemed to stick to the fins instead of being blown away. If you live in a house with heavy smokers, the tar from the smoke can cause dust and other dander from the air can stick to the heat conducting surfaces. Before doing anything else to your laptop I would make sure that the fins are as clean as possible.

Just mod your G51 ( Youtube or google it ) , you need to screw the bottom pannel

It does sound like dust stuck in the heatsink fins. Compressed gas cans usually fix that sort of problems. Open the back panel and blow directly through the vents rather than the fan intake. If you see dust coming out, you know that was your problem, if nothing comes out, since you're still under warranty, i'd have Asus take care of it then.

Should i do like the guy on this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwXNNm2SmS8 DO i need to stick the heatsink back with a thermal compount on the cpu or i can do also without. I have never done any of this before and i am a little bit afraid

you, my friend, are just experiencing what every other G51J owner has gone through. A rite of passage i must say. Go look for the G51J owner's lounge and you will find out more. I just sold mine 2 months back after a 2 year romance. But i will give you some quick solutions

    1. Unscrew the bottom plate and blow out the dust trapped in the fan duct. Blow it outwards, not inwards.

    2. Get a GOOD laptop cooler. I recommend the Cooler Master U3. Place all the cooler fans directly at the cooling ducts under the laptop

    3. Turn on the air conditioner in the room or point a fan directly at the laptop.

    4. **high level of difficulty** Purchase a spare bottom panel and cut a hole directly at portion that covers the fan. Most effective way, but also the hardest.

You problems are normal. The G51J just has crappy heat dispersal systems. No computer shop or service centre is going to solve your problems indefinitely. Save yourself the trouble and just try out the first 3 points i stated above. Msg me if you need more advice.

PS. forget the thermal compound. It voids your warranty.
