I'm very interested in the g53sw-a1: it's got the gtx460m 192bit (compared to the 128bit of some other asus laptops i was looking at), an i7, full HD, room for more ram, etc, and at ~$1100 it's hard to beat. I want to run Battlefield 3, ES Skyrim, and CS Global Offensive at med-high settings with the HD. From my understanding this computer will be able to do just that. However, I'm wondering how long the 460m will be relevant; that is, how far into the future will it take me playing games at higher settings with the HD. I was also considering the g74sx-xr1, which obviously has the newer screen, but also has newer features such as the 560m 192bit from nvidia. For ~$300 more does it make sense to spring for the g74, or should I stick with the g53 which to me seems like the right choice.

correct me if i'm wrong but i believe that 560m is 128bit. I would go for the full 192bit 460 over that. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, I have researched on G53SW vs G35SX and SW wins in GPU performance. The 560m on the SX is gimped. The G53SW is the better performer

Hmm thanks for the info and saving me from a gimped GPU and now I am as well very interested to hear if the 460 can run those games and as well.

The 460m with some good overclocking will be able to run those games great, maybe even @ stock

I personally prefer the XN1 vs the A1.

    Why?

    A1
    A1 has 2GB more ram
A1 has 2 yr warranty vs 1 yr
    A1 has 750GB vs 500GB HDD
    A1 has backpack
    A1 has mouse

    XN1
    $200-300 Cheaper (On average)
CC gives me a free 2nd year warranty

The back back, mouse, and 250GB more HD space don't really justify the price difference for me. Would rather spend that money on a SSD for the laptop.

Well, I bought A1, and I'm happy with that. Don't buy SX, bad performance ON HD/HD+/FHD.
    A1 better then XA1 (I'v got 2 years warrenty, plus 8GB plus 750GB PLUS A great backpack + (didn't get it yet) a mice 3600 dpi)

    Go for G53SW-A1

The 500GB harddrive is a hybrid one. So bootup should be noticeably faster than with the 750GB one. The backpack is good. But you can save $300 and use that to buy an SSD, a good backpack and an awesome gaming mouse. And mebbe more ram IF you require.

EDIT: I mean get the xn1 over the a1. You can save $$$s which you can put to good use.

So basically if I go with the xn1 I get no mouse, backpack, 250gb smaller hdd, and 2gb less ram? Also, what exactly makes the smaller HDD in the xn1 faster?

It's sold out right now on newegg, and it says the mail-in rebate expires on the 30th of september. I found the a1 on bhphotovideo.com for $1050, so if I can't get the newegg rebate for the xn1, it's only a $150 difference. If it gets to the point where the xn1 isn't restocked and I can't get the rebate I will definitely go for the a1.

That's actually pretty awesome. Do you know what the hdd is on the a1? I'm having trouble finding the model.

If I go for the g53sw-a1 do you think it is okay to buy it from bhphotovideo? It comes with all the amenities (e.g mouse, warranty, etc.), but it is ~$100 cheaper than, say, xotic pc. Is the customer service with bhphotovideo bad or something? I'm just concerned about why xotic's is priced higher when it is the exact same model.

The 500gb harddisk has a 4gb NAND chip which helps in improved bootup times compared to normal 7200rpm harddisks. The 750gb harddisk is a normal 7.2k rpm harddrive.
