I had my asus g72gx worked on a few weeks ago. Three days ago I noticed the backlit keyboard not working. I dont know if it was working when i received it back or not. It will work in express gate and stay on until windows 7 starts. All my other function keys will work. It is like I am not pressing F-3 or F-4 at all..........So frustrated! Please someone give me a suggestion. I have rolled back in system resore and checked the keyboard driver. Should I put the recovery disk in?....I have never done that before.

Uninstall and reinstall your ATK drivers or ATK package. If they don't work at all after that, the keyboard backlight connector may be in backwards or loose. You can remove the keyboard and reseat the cable yourself in that case.

How do I do that? I have driver and utility disk.....do I uninstall atk first? Not too versed in this sort of thing....

Also.....the keyboard backlight works in Asus Express Gate......

If it works in expressgate it's not a hardware problem, so you don't need to worry about the cable. Just uninstall and reinstall the ATK drivers. You can get them off the CD or from here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

ok......I uninstalled the keyboard driver and it reinstalled itself on restart....

I uninstalled ATK Hotkey and reinstalled from the disk.....

My other choices in the uninstall page is ATK Generic...ATK Media....ATK OSD2...

Am I doing this correctly.....This problem may be bigger than a driver?...it seems to have something to do with windows 7? because it works in express gate. hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Uninstall atk software except for ATK OSD2, then reinstall starting with atk generic.

I'm not a huge expert on the G72 in particular. 99% of the time reinstalling the ATK drivers fixes backlit keyboard problems, maybe you should try the latest from the asus support site.

I've never owned a g72, so I'm not sure if this is a known problem, but I couldn't dig up any threads about a persistent problem with keyboard lights. You can try resetting your BIOS to defaults, or flashing to a newer BIOS revision if it's not on the latest. If you suspect it could still be a hardware issue, you could take the keyboard off and reconnect the connector for the lights, if you're comfortable with that. Otherwise your options are to use system restore or reinstall from scratch, or RMA it back to ASUS and let them deal with it.
