Hey all. So when I try to play Second Life on this laptop and set the graphics setting to 'high' all the stuff in the game turn pink. But when I try to update I get a blue screen...
    Bios is current.
    Vbios is current.

Already contacted ASUS and they told me - they won't update G73JH VGA drivers. Just go straight to amd.com and download the latest 12.1 drivers.
Laptop works better with the latest drivers.

you should update your bios to 213 before doing vbios update,
please be careful when handling with bios it can let to brick your system.

I just upgraded my BIOS from 209 to 213... so now I have to update my vBios before updating the graphic card?

Just updating the BIOS from 209 to 213 did not work. Got a blue screen when trying to update graphics card. I knew it couldn't be that easy.
    Anyone else? Please?

then you got some problem in operating system, you should do a full restore, to factory state.

DO I have to redo the BIOS and vbios update if I do a full restore?

No, after a fresh install/full restore, that's the time you will have to properly uninstall and install the GPU drivers.

Woo! I got it to work!
I uninstalled the driver from Device Manager
then restarted and Windows installed a default VGA driver
then I ran the install and it worked!!! :)

    Thanks!

whitenoiz, your success story above gave me inspiration to find the best way to get the most updated catalyst driver installed without ever encountering a blue screen. I have just performed a fresh W7 install and tried this method like you did above, and it worked flawlessly so I'm posting to validate your results.

    Here's what I did:
    • fresh install W7
    • install stock vga driver or updated version on asus support site (either one)
    • download the AMD driver autodetect tool
    • run the tool and download the latest driver, BUT DO NOT INSTALL IT
    • make sure you know where the download was saved, I chose the folder myself so I could find the file later
    • now open device manager and uninstall the display device, making sure to check "delete driver software"
    • reboot
    • once back in windows, run the installer that you just downloaded which contains the latest driver and catalyst versions
    • reboot again when instructed
    • bask in your awesomeness
It worked for me on two different G73JH's. Good luck all.

@micman: Did all the above micman. I tried this method twice. I cannot get my ati drivers to install at all without doing a clean install again. It seems after the vbios update my Asus g73jh will only work with the outdated Asus ati driver. Tried your method and I'm permanently stuck in VGA driver. Sigh, have to clean install with CD recovery again...

This method will only work if you have the latest Bios (213) and vBios (0.93). It's a hassle but getting the latest driver installed is worth it.

Micman: Thanks for all the help!!! One more question.. Is a recovery CD clean install the same as a windows CD clean install?

It's not the same, the recovery cd reverts the computer to how it was when you first got it, with all the Asus bloatware installed. Using just a windows oem install only installs windows 7, and you are responsible from that point to add all the drivers you would need on your own. Note, if you do a fresh install with an oem windows dvd (which I recommend), you're going to want to use the drivers and applications dvd that came with the computer to install the drivers. Just make sure you don't install the bloatware along with the drivers. The choice is up to you and good luck.

I've been using recovery Cd clean install...With all the issues Ive have been having after the vBIOS flash and new ati drivers not installing..... So should I give the windows 7 clean install CD a try then??? Will it matter??

@micman or anyone that can help. This is my current vbios update number: 012.020.000.032.0383.G730 Does this look right? Do I have the correct vbios update? If not please provide me with a link to the correct vbios update. If you read my previous posts ive done just about everything to get this to work. But I can't update my drivers no matter what I do after the vbios update. So my only conclusion I can come to is I have the wrong vbios update for my card.. I have a G73jh Asus notebook with a ATI mobility radeon hd 5870 graphic card. I did the infamous vbios update. I also have BIOS update 213.

Your vBios version is different from mine, but that's probably ok. I still have an old one from a member who no longer exists on NBR. I just figured that since the vBios still works great I have never updated it. If you used one from the page I linked you to in post #25 you should be fine on the vBios front. I used the modded version from that page recently on a friend's G73 and had little issue getting drivers installed.

You don't have to start with a fresh windows install every time you try to get the driver installed again, just run driver sweeper. There's lots of threads floating around here about how to do that effectively, and google is your friend in finding them. I suggest trying again starting with driver sweeper, then installing the original driver, then follow the process again from here to get latest drivers running.

Report back with results, and don't give up! We are smarter than machines, really!

I have not had any luck in my last attempt to try to flash the vbios, no flash drive I had would let me format it as an MS-DOS disk so I had given up.

But the past few weeks have been trying on my G73...it keeps locking up/freezing with a loud noise usually. Even when just idling. I thought it was just overheating...but putting a cooling pad underneath...actually makes it crash faster. I don't even know how or why this is possible. So I've just tried to leave it alone.

This has frustrated me enough to the point I want to just go back to a desktop I can upgrade as I need again.

I'm currently giving this link's advice a try, http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...87-fix-g73-freezes-random-shutdowns-bsod.html, though I don't have my hopes up. I tried Throttlestop but it didn't seem to help.

I'm open to any advice. I love my G73JH...but this is seriously just simply aggrivating me. It runs anything I put at it as long as it stays working.

    Quick question:

I have a new-to-me G73JH-A3 I inherited from my brother. I have just performed a clean install of Windows 7 Pro.

Can I install the Catalyst 12.1 package without having to either update the system bios or the vbios prior to installation?

    Thanks in advance for responding.

It might already have had vbios updated, if not you will need to do so to run any recent catalyst drivers.. before the updated vbios came out only the original stock drivers from ASUS worked! Refer to the vBios update guide, and make sure you do it via a USB drive not winFLASH unless you are a gambling man!

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/515309-how-fix-your-gsod-blues.html

Of course you could just update to Catalyst 12.8 then see if you get any freezes or GSOD, but I'd put in the extra work and update first myself.

Might as well update the BIOS at the same time, though not as essential as the vBIOS.

Guides for everything relating to the G73JH are in the "read this before posting section". Also, check the temperatures under load and idle and see if you need to dust out the vents, or do the more final solution of repasting.

Have fun, and read the instructions carefully!

OK massive bump from back in time..

I still run my G73JH and I really want to update my Catalyst driver. I am wondering, if I follow all of the advise on this thread and update my Bios to 213 and vBios to 93 (as stated in the thread circa august 2012), how likely is it that I can update to current 14.x catalyst drivers? Will I only be able to update to 12.x drivers?

Another way to put this question is: If I update to current Bios and vBios releases, am I likely to be able to able to update to current catalyst drivers?

Just checked, my bios version is 211 and vBios is BR038352.001. Hurm. not sure where the .93 comes into the vbios version suggested and I wonder what the latest release is.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing and able to take this up! If I get no response, I'll be ready to attempt the fix week beginning 09/06/14 (uk calender) and I'll post results of the Catalyst 12.x attempt and Catalyst 14.x attempt.

    Todsk

I am running 14.6beta catalyst fine as are other g73jh users. Just be careful updating and follow the guides. Might be worth flashing Chastity's vbios with overdrive unlocked so you can over clock with catalyst control. Make sure you use a fat32 formatted USB to flash!

I´m running 14.6 beta and so far so good. I have 213 BIOS and Chastity´s vBios (don´t know wich one...). Now I´m thinking about overclocking the card, does anybody know the fps gain with an average OC?.

    Thanks in advance.

Same as the % of overclock you do on the core mostly.

800 to 825 on core seems to be a common happy overclock. I found performance gain a bit less than the percentage of the overclock. Memory over clocking gave practically no benefit so I just leave that stock (screen flicker from memory changing frequency was annoying too).

Yeah you want to bios flash any memory clock changes for long term use.
