I'm not an expert on this subject but, since no one has replied, I'll provide some information that I posted a while back on this subject.

It came from this posting, http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...-anyone-recommend-me-blu-ray-drive-g73jh.html , if you want to see the whole thing, but here's the jist of it:

"I put a Sony Optiarc BD-5730S in my G73jw. No firmware upgrade required. Provides read and write for all Blu-Ray, DVD and CD mediums, took less than 5 minutes to install and, so far, has worked great. Got it on eBay for about $100.00 but I had to wait and watch for about a month to get it at that price. Sorry, I don't remember who the vendor was. Good luck."

    Best regards
    Ross

I bought a BD-ROM drive on eBay for $90-100 that said it was for the G73JH. It works. However, logic tells me that just about any BD-ROM drive should work, because the drive input socket seems to be the same across all laptops.

That happened to my G73JH's optical drive (dvd-combo) and what I did is I tried to clean the lens carefully with a microfiber moistened with and a lens cleaner (I used iKlear). This solved my optical drive problem.

How did it turn? I did that on my optical drive because I used a can of compressed-air on cleaning out my vents and I have forgotten to open the optical drive while doing it. So what happened is that my lens got some amount of dusts which is most probably the culprit why it sometimes read dvds/cds and sometimes don't.

Mine has crapped out as well. Any advice on how to clean the laser head? I guess it could be dust. Mine will read but will not write.

    Thanks

Simply use a microfiber cloth. you can also use lens cleaner if the cloth isn't enough.
