2 days ago my laptop went out so I decided to repaste the gpu and cpu. I clipped 2 wires, speakers and the "lcd light cable" connected to the monitor. Both of which I believe do not affect the video. When booting, lights blink, fans whir, but I get no video. I've tried taking out the cmos battery, reseating RAM, holding down the power button w/o battery and adapter, but nothing works. When connecting to a monitor and projector nothing comes on. I'm lost on what to do next. Laptop is around 2 years old now and I have no warranty on it.

your gpu is dead due to damaging the gpu core while reinstalling the heatsink or by turning the gpu heatsink screws more than what it is ment for.
or pressed the heatsink too much.
and gpu replacement will bring back your laptop.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions so fast.
When my graphics card died my lights would blink and my keyboard wold light up. It seems like DrRiceBowl's g73 doesn't even get that far. It could be a few things.
I recommend a full disassembly and reassembly. It could be a loose or forgotten connection, a wire may be pressing on the reset button or you may have severed one of the important cables/created a small short. I put a crew through my "led bar" cable and it created a short that my mobo detected and cut pier to every other part of the mobo. Can you hear your drive "buzz"? I remember that if it was the ram or the gpu it would still buzz (mine did for both ram and gpu). to be honest i think those bacles you clipped are shorting and you mobo is shutting down to protect itself.

My keyboard does, caps lock and num lock indicator all light up. Before when this happened (couple times of its life span ) I did a disassembly, didn't remove the mobo. A day passed and the only thing wrong was it put the boot priority to the internal LAN card( I believe that's what it was called) since it started showing a Mac address.

Doubled checked all cables, hard drive, cd drive is spinning.

After pasting I did accidently screw the 2nd instead of the 3rd, but I caught that right away. If that split second is the cause that's quite bummer. Any recommendations or things to keep in mind while lookin for a replacement?

Yea... sound like a dead graphics card... Sorry mate. I doubt that was the cause. It may have been ESD. It could be thermal paste on the PCB part of the card. Most thermal pastes are conductive and this can destroy a graphics card. If this is the case try and remove it and see how it goes.

Yea. put bluntly, you need a new graphics card. When my 5870m dies I took it a way to force myself into upgrading mine. I have put a 6990m into mine and it awesome. You may be better off getting a 7970m though, its a beast of a card. There is a thread on here dedicated to the upgrade. maybe you should have a read into that before buying a new 5870m. Goodluck!

the upper part of your gpu die is cracked , so no way of making it work, best option is to replace the card or upgrade , dont worry about compatibility , all ati mxm 3.0 b cards works on g73.

All work bit not all are 100% compatible. It seems only clevo cards have fan control and only dell cards have hdmi. Make sure you research it before you buy any graphics card.

Hdmi isn't really a biggie for me as I don't really use it. Seems the 7970 would be pricey for me, and reading through the whole thread there's not thorough guide to install it. The 6990m doesn't seem too bad it's just that modding would be difficult since tools that I could use are at home.

Hdmi does not work on the 6990m (dell vbios results in a brick), it may work on the 7970m and does work if you flash a dell vbios to a clevo card on the 6970m.
All you need is a hacksaw and you are good to go for the heatsink mod. Make sure you read: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/584295-upgrade-g73-jh-6970-a.html and http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/641007-g73jh-6970m-upgrade-infomation.html ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I posted some information specific the the clevo 6990m towards the end of the second thread. Just make sure to take it slow and be sure of what you are doing.

Hmm prob just going to get another 5870M, from looking around it would seem that asus' 5870 is different so guessing the alienware version is not compatible. Is ebay my best shot at getting one? Googling around just gets me lots of reviews or referring me to the desktop version.

Ebay or the NBR Marketplace. The Dell (AW) ones wont have fan contril (they will be at 100% fan all the time but you will most likely get lower temps at load and a much higher overclock. Try and find a Clevo one, I would imagine, like the 6970m and the 6990m that they will have proper fan control. You will still have to mod the heatsink I would imagine.

bah I overlooked the fact that I would have to mod for the 5870 too. Initial searching isn't finding anyone that has done it before. Going to try to snatch a used laptop for around the price of the 6670/90 first.
