Longtime lurker, but finally decided to post here, since I cannot find anyone else having the same issue.

Our household has owned almost every model of Asus ROG laptop that comes out, since someone is always upgrading or replacing. They had rubberized coatings for most of those years, but seem to be trying to compete with MSI now and went all-aluminum.

However, this borked my ability to use my mouse, due to the highly reflective surface. I have yet to find a mouse that actually -works- consistently, and is a) small, b) 5+ button, c) wireless, and d) laser. Essentially I have "lady hands" and use the palm rest for my mouse -- been doing this for too many years to change.

This was never an issue until the metal palm rest change, and needed to swap from optical to laswer, apparently. I've been using a Gigabyte bluetooth, but it sucks batteries like CRAZY, and is unreliable as hell (regularly loses sync). The battery issue is worse though, it goes through about 4 AAA's a week.

And most other mice are simply either too big, or lack the 5 buttons. I gotta have a smaller mouse or it slides off the palm rest. And wires won't work for logistical reasons, since the wire falls over the keys when using the palm rest.

Oddly after much research, I still can't find a match, and I don't want to just start buying mice randomly to see if they actually track on the metal surface. Price isn't an object... I am just not sure such a mouse exists, aside from the Gigabyte 7000 I already own.

Does anyone else use a mouse on a metal palmrest, and have a solution? I'm also trying to see if there are any palm rest covers made for laptops, or that can be reconfigured to fit, and allow for a less "fussy" mouse. I really miss my Microsoft 6000, but ... only works on non-reflective surfaces.

Silly question, perhaps, but ... ~P1000 sandpaper? A minute's work and you can use any mouse you want.

Just be aware of the warranty implications of such an action ;) Maybe a mini mouse mat cut to the right dimentions may do better.

I probably own 15 to 20 different logitech products (8 are mice), the latest one I bought is called the logitech anywhere mouse. I bought it because I have a clear/black glass desk in my office and no other mouse would work correctly. This mouse works on glass, mirrors, walls, windows, fabric, tv screens... pretty much you name it. I use it with the various laptops I own (latest one is a G46VW that has the black aluminum palmrest. The mouse has 3 extra buttons, and all of the buttons are programmable via setpoint (a logitech program).

Look into this mouse and see if it will meet your needs.

You can get them refurbished/used on ebay for a good price as well.

I wondered when we would see more mice aimed at working anywhere, that's pretty cool.

Thanks C4RN1. I did notice that Logitech seemed to pass my needs test, but I didn't want to spend the 50-60 shekels to "experiment".

Given that the majority of gaming laptops are going all aluminum now, I do wonder how most people use mice with them... does anyone actually use their laptop in their lap, or are they just used in mobile desk setups? I can't imagine I'm the only person with this issue.

Usually I use the mouse on a nearby surface or I carry around my scarab in the carry case it shipped with.

Use a Razer Pro|Click Mobile on a 13.3"'s palmrest; perfect match. Scratches the paint, but 'meh' ... don't care. Might work on a reflective surface, but it's only a 3-button. Did research ' tiny wireless mice' before opting for the Razer (values in mm):

You can get different feet if it scratches the metal.
