    Notebooks & Ultrabooks - G550JK - ASUS

I didn't find any specific thread about this notebook, so i'm creating this one for further discussion.
My first point here: Do you guys think the GTX 850m ddr3 is that bad compared to GTX 860m Gddr5 that, for example, Lenovo Y50 has?

Gddr5 will have a decent impact on performance.

Do you think the difference is worth 200 dollars more?

After a little talk with the store, i can now buy the y50 with i7 for the same price as the asus. Now it's worth, right?

Not really since the Y50 still uses a below average TN panel.

Well, it's a sacrifice i'll have to make to gain 35-40% video performance. Think it's worth.

Well that's really up to you but with the Y50 you do get very good performance for the price, the screen is OK but personally I would look for better laptops with the 860M.
Besides a good GPU screen quality is very important, you can have the best GPU but if you have a crappy screen it just ruins the whole point of having a good card.
If your on a budget go for it and good luck.

I was going to buy an MSI GE60 or 70, but a lot of people are having trouble with the trackpad and heat issues.

Yeah lenovo screwed up with all the screens. First terrible TN FHD screens then 4k screens that are software locked into 48hz. 48hz, really?

Asus themselves list it as DDR3 for both 2GB and 4GB variants.

Yeah considering Asus and everywhere else says DDR3 and all the owners say DDR3 I think that is a safe bet.

Is the screen on the G550JK not IPS? One of the reviews on newegg seems to mention that it is not IPS..

    Test Asus GL550JK-CN391H Notebook - Notebookcheck.com Tests

the checked the NB just recently (sorry, no english version right now). the screen is a very good IPS-panel.

but the GPU really only uses DDR3, sacrificing roughly 20% of performance by that decision.

I would be more tempted to by the Lenovo Y50 and then replace the screen, if it really annoyed me. that IS possible, but exchanging the GPU rather not ...

plus the G550jk still looks a little to much "gamer-nerdy" for me. better than Alienware or MSI, but I like understatement. ;)

So ended buying the g550jk. Will be arriving Friday, stoked about it . Received a lot of help from this website especially the thread on N550jk. I am not a computer expert or anything but will be willing to check on it and clarify any doubts that ppl have once it arrives on Friday.

Hi, What I'd like to know about the G550JK is if it has the same keyboard problems as the N550JK. If anybody on this forum gets theirs can they report on this? Thanks!

Guys I really like this laptop, but I'm not a heavy gamer, more of a casual one. My use is mostly software for designers like Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign and programmers. The "look" of the laptop is very important. The only thing I'm not in a rush, should I wait for the G551? Other laptops?
    Thanks

To owners out there, Is the Samsung IPS display on the Asus G550JK a 6 bit or 8 bit panel? HWinfo should help.

The previous LG panel on the N550JV and N550Jk was 6 bit.

The GTX860M is faster yes but the 850M even with DDR3 is capable and will do any casual gaming just fine.

Thank you, I thought so, but one of the best matte IPS displays out there in terms of brightness, contrast, etc, a combination of features which are really difficult to find.
