I just ran into a problem that my G53SW is well known for. The screen magnetic sensor just kicked the bucket, and now the power button stopped working. I can still get it to work once it fails by moving a magnet on top of the palm rest just to the right of the touchpad, but I obviously want to get a permanent fix.

I just talked to Asus support, and they won't send me a new palm rest or at least a touchpad with the magnetic sensor. The company line is that I have to send my whole laptop in for service. What that means is I have to take all my data off, restore to factory settings, send it out and receive it back within a few weeks.

Sorry, that won't cut it. I need this laptop (or any laptop/computer) for work on a daily basis, and yes, gaming. I can live without gaming, but I cannot live without work. So I am faced with four options as far as I can see.

    - live with the issue
    - convince Asus to send me the part
    - buy a part from Asus or Ebay
    - sell this G53SW and buy another laptop

What should I do? One thing is certain from my point of view. If Asus does not send me the part, I will deal with the issue one way or another. However this will be the LAST Asus I EVER buy.

You should be able to order the part from ebay or asusparts.eu or ask an Asus service provider to order the part and do the replacement for you if there is an ASP near you. You should be able to get an arrangement with the ASP to order the part then have them call you when it arrives and drop the notebook to have the repair done quickly.

Arranging for the part to be shipped to an ASP would be the best solution, as there is one close to me. But would the ASP be willing to fix my laptop in my presence or without any hard drives inside? Anything less than that would mean wasting a lot of time taking my data off the laptop, which doesn't make any sense. Repairing my laptop means 4 keyboard clips and one palm rest screw.

You can contact them, i don't see why they would mind doing it with the HDDs removed. I don't think they'll let you in their repair spot if it's somewhere in the back of their store though. That doesn't mean that they don't have place where they could do it and you could watch.
